Let me first say I watched Joey and it made me laugh as well.
Now even though it does not have nearly as much originality in it as Firefly, I still support it and any show that at least takes a chance on using writers to create a form of escapism (which I think most forms of entertainment are on some level) for me to enjoy. If you like reality programming fine, but if I want reality I will live my life, I don't want to have reality to escape to. And IMO reality shows have a greater share in the reason why superb shows like Firefly are cancelled. That is reality gets good ratings (typically) at low cost and quickly, whereas a show like Firefly is more expensive, and usually takes a longer time for high ratings, not to mention decent network support to get there (FOX

OK, I MUST put my two cents in on this one! And I've got a couple of things to say.
First off, it is the wave of "reality" TV that hurts new, daring, intelligent shows like Firefly. It is one of the main reasons Angel didn't make it to another season. They are easy and cheap to produce, and unfortunately, appeal to the basest parts of people. Their popularity is staggering, and unfortunately, I don't see any waning of this, quite the opposite in fact. And we know that the networks will pander to that bottom denominator, whatever it takes to make the bucks! And, God help us, "reality" TV is what is making the bucks (and killing shows like Firefly).
Ok, now my other point. I have stopped defending myself to ingnorant people who say to me, "What? You watch Buffy? Angel? etc. Why would you spend your time on that junk?" These people either a. never watched a Joss show and so have no clue what they are talking about or b. have watched, and it's not for them. For those in the "a" category, I say, "Bite me" You can't speak on something you don't know. For those in the "b" category, I say, that's fine. What appeals to me may not appeal to you. We are allowed to have different opinions. However, I would never dis someone because they like something different than me, or because they have a different opinion.
I've been around since the days of the Dick Van Dycke (sp) show (one of the first and best sitcoms ever) and have seen the best and worst of how they have evolved. For every MASH, there is a Hope and Glory. Friends was a fun show. It will indeed rank up there somewhere in terms of sitcoms. Did it go on too long, perhaps. Did I go in and out of it, yes. But it was, at all times, fun. And sometimes, I just need fun. My TV watching is much like my reading. When I choose to be challenged or made to think, I pick up certain authors and books. When I choose to just have fun and be entertained, I pick up others. There is nothing wrong with just wanting to be entertained, as long as it is balanced.
Ok, I've got more to say, but I've gone on too long. SOMEBODY GET ME OFF THIS SOAPBOX!!! I'll just close by saying that I enjoy different things. And it is because people like different things that shows like Buffy, Angel and Firefly got a chance in the first place. It is the network mucky mucks forgetting to balance their programing, and not allowing other, intelligent (and fun) shows to produce that gets in the way.
PS. I'm going to give Joey a chance, just cause it might be fun!

I agree with you that reality shows are why Firefly and Angel were cancelled. In fact, I watched the premiere of "Joey" last night for one reason only - EVERYTHING ELSE ON AT THE SAME TIME WAS A BUNCH OF INSIPID REALITY SHOWS.
As to "Joey", I thought it was better than "Friends" had been for the last three years, but that doesn't make it good. Except for the opening joke (What are you doing in Dallas?), it wasn't all that funny. But given a choice of that or all the reality crap... oh yeah, I went back to reading my Tom Clancy book, "The Bear and the Dragon". It's much better than anything on tv these days.

Now THAT's what I'm talking about. If nothing good is on, turn the television off. I was worried that maybe the new sets don't allow that option.

It's not really that the sets don't allow that option. It's more that many people don't seem to know that turning off their tv set IS an option.
I get your point, and you're absolutely right: If the only material on tv is stupid crap, then get your entertainment from sources that still exhibit/require intelligent thought - books are a good example, but only one of many. I used to read a lot, but I started watching more tv a few years ago because shows like "Buffy", then "Angel", Farscape" and "Firefly" were on. Guess what!. They're ALL gone now. Time to go back to he books...
And yes, that also means that these eyes will not be watching all of the dumb commercials imbedded in all of the dumb shows. I know this is just a fantasy but.... imagine if all the people who currently just run the tv out of habit would turn the damned thing off unless there was something on that they actually liked... Think how that would change the programming landscape.
