It seemed like they really wanted to be there for a particular reason.
SignyM: I swear, if we really knew what was being decided about us in our absence, and how hosed the government is prepared to let us be, we would string them up.
Water, I believe. They aimed it for that crater because they've detected water there, if I'm not mistaken.
And the rover is eventually supposed to climb a peak known as Mt. Sharp, seen here:

Is that ice at the top? Curiosity aims to find out!

If Mars already didn't have the reputation of being a junkyard for probes and this were "just" another typical landing, on another world, it'd be a stunning achievement.
But because Mars has earned that rep, and because this landing was so more complicated than any other, I was thinking our guys ( and gals ) @ NASA had tried to go a bridge too far w/ this one.
I had to watch the replay, via my xBox app, as well as following via twitter, and still, it was ... there are no words.
And yeah. I got a little teary eyed at the scene from the control room... well done, NASA. Bravo.

THANKS! for the link cljohnston108!
I am still unbelievably pleased. Giddy in fact. And your link was the best cherry on the top ever.
Yeah, I keep replaying that moment: "Touchdown! We're safe on Mars!" over & over.
Just brings up happy tears of pride.
You'll no doubt want to keep an eye on NASAtelevision's YouTube channel...
EDIT: Ooooh, hey, forgot these...

Correction... just crushed a MARTIAN rock, which is made up of tiny, smaller bits of Martian rock! Science IS amazing!
Was glad Curiosity was able to raise the ol' main mast. Which is impressive, as she's a chick and all.
