However, I'm waiting for the first color pictures from Curiosity, and results from all that lab equipment. Years of good stuff is looking to come of this. I haven't looked into the plans in detail, but I wonder if there is a path planned to get out of the crater. Wouldn't it suck if, after all this, they stuck it in a valley where it will just circle and circle? (OK, given the landing they just pulled off, I doubt NASA did something so silly.)

FWIW I know one of the people who worked on the impedance probe at JPL to determine how much subsurface water there is on Mars, and what state it's in. I also know another person who does JPL financial support work. I feel lucky to be even indirectly associated with the effort through them, and am still SO pleased. MOST AWESOME.
ETA: Many years in the past I'd been in contact with JPL people who were designing a self-directing independent rover and running it along the streets of Pasadena. But my interest was very limited to their 'odor' (volatile chemical sensing) detectors as well as their deconvolution routine to determine the geographic source(s). That whole thing about designing a program to map the environment, to develop an independent search routine and to seek a source location - whole 'nother ball game.

It seemed like they really wanted to be there for a particular reason.
