Thanks Niki. We're fine down here. Distance from the floods to me is about the same as New York to Texas, a long way away.

La Nina is certainly causing problems for the tropical north, where they get loads of rain at this time of year anyway as it is the Wet Season, and they are well set up for high rainfall. So for them to flood again this year, must be an enormous amount of water.

How often does this happen Magon's? I remember Australia had big floods last year too. Has it always been like this or is it something new for you?

Well as I said, we're experiencing the effects of La Nina http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Ni%C3%B1a and can last for a few years. But also, as I said, Queensland has sub tropical and tropical weather systems, so they have intense seasonal rainfalls much like a monsoon period. The north of Australia experiences two seasons 'The Wet' and "The Dry'. Not very poetic, but you get the point.

I live in a temperate climate, oceanic temperate to be exact. Changeable erratic weather, more consistent rainfall, mild winters, summer storms etc etc

When Mother Nature gets grumpy, get out of the way. I'm hoping there's not a loss of life. Property can be replaced.

Weren't there big brush fires recently? I admit, I'm not up on Australian geography.

It's a big country, something I think a lot of Americans don't realise. Fairly similar in size to the US. You get lots of different weather conditions. Bush fires are common in many areas in the summer season, and occasionally they get serious. The last ones that were of real concern were in the west last november. They were around 4000 km from where I live, about 5000km from the current floods, which were around 1500km from where I live.

I hope this clarifies. Apart from general interest, neither event impacted upon me.

I think maybe a couple of things, Magons. I think we view Australia as only being POPULATED in a very small area, so that causes a mental discount of its size. Also, we're so used to thinking in terms of "little" countries...europe, far east, afrida, etc., that we forget how big Australia is--especially since it's rarely in the news much or for long.

After all, aside from China, Russia (is it that big, now it's not the USSR?), Canada and us, there really isn't any other "big" country aside from Australia, is there?

At the same time, there is the mentality, and how the news portrays things. When we had our Loma Prieta 'quake, I was getting e-mails and calls from friends around the country wanting to know if I was okay. The fact that the only "widespread" damage was Oakland's freeway collapse and the Marina's land-fill disasters, doesn't come across.

So it's not that surprising. I kinda figured you were okay; I've gotten a somewhat better grasp of Australia from having several long-time friends down there. There's just so seldom any news from Down Under, I thought I'd post it. I've always tried to remember (on other websites & here) when we have folk from other countries, to notice their news and ask what they think. Even got a buddy in Greece, and hooo, boy, have they been having a rough time! Not just the current financial stuff, but the fires a while back...

Melbourne is the city way down at the bottom, right? I've heard its the southernmost city of that size in the world?

We're at the bottom of the mainland. Not sure whether Buenos Aires is lower. Tasmania is the island underneath and it has a reasonable sized city, Hobart. Lovely place too. I think I posted some pics late last year as we visited.

Not entirely sure what you mean by the lower 48, is that all the states excluding Hawaii and Alaska? I think that is about correct.

Sure is.

And yes MD, that's what I mean. The lower 48, or contiguous states, not counting Alaska or Hawaii. Add those 2 states, the US has more land area than Australia.

So are you in Melbourne Magon's? I think its more south than BA because in On The Beach it is the last big city to go.

Yep, sorry Rione. In the Greater Melbourne area.

I guess it depends on what you determine a large city is. Christchurch in NZ is lower and it has about 300,000??? maybe more. Hobart has a couple of hundred thou. But of course we have about 5mill, so little comparison so you may right.

Did you see the old or new movie, or read the book? The book was very depressing.

I saw the new movie a couple of years ago, it was good. I read the book in Sept. and it had a profound effect on me for some reason. I knew what would happen since I'd seen the movie and that made it worse to see it creeping up.
