Dunno if anyone's posted about it before, but it sure blew my mind! We get these big guys in SF every day, and man, they are incredibly big! To think of one on its side is incomprehensible to me, my mind just can't grasp it.
One of my first thoughts was why didn't more people jump in, since I think of Mediteranean waters as "warm", but apparently not! I thought that also because they mentioned the "fly by", so logically people should have been able to see land. Look how close it was to shore:
But I see now it apparently happened at night?
It's also incredible to me that 4,000 made it out--I dunno how fast it happened, but that's a LOT of people to get away safely! That only 6 are known dead (tho' 10 still missing) seems amazing.

Thank you for posting this Niki, because to me its a huge issue. The crash was an accident, butI believe that the deaths were caused by negligence from the captain and crew, no one needed to die in this situation, especially the guys in their cabins with their life jackets on waiting to be told what to do. That is a horrible thing and I believe that people will get in trouble, as they probably should. They were so close to the shore and I believe that everyone could have been rescued if things had been handled right. I'm coming down hard on this unlessI see some evidence that there was no better potential outcome.

Between mystery on-ship illnesses and captains veering off course, it's no wonder I've not found my way on to a cruise ship...

The Captain was not on the bridge when it hit the rock "BUT", he was in the life boat before most passengers. One of the dancers is being hailed as a hero, not any crew.

Raptor, the likelihood of having a cruise ship disaster is minimal. I've cruised before and it was fun. I was a little nervous at first, the movie Titanic being a formative experience in my girlhood, but we had a drill at the beginning and after that I never thought twice about disaster at sea. Its pretty fun, I went to Alaska.

Riona, I've always pictured taking a cruise in a more tropical setting... though I do get the whole Alaska thing.
My way, should the ship capsize or sink, at least I could swim to safety. Provided there was something to swim TO , and I wasn't too drunk. ( both probably unlikely )

Yeah, someday I'll cruise somewhere tropical. We chose Alaska because it was something my dad had always wanted to do, he's always liked Alaska, enjoyed visiting there. I enjoyed it very much but the only problem was that we couldn't swim because the pool wasn't kept up, they must have figured that they didn't have to take care of keeping it warm or anything because no one would want to swim while up in Alaska, of course I wanted to swim because I always want to swim, so the hottub had to suffice. My favorite things about the ship were being on the water all the time, having a room with a balcony, sailing up to glacier bay and seeing the glacier from our boat, and singing in the talent competition. I was 19 and I didn't win, but I had quite a cult following afterwords. :)

The news is saying its the captain's fault, he steered away from the regular course to show off. None of this needed to happen.
