Mostly solid, yes. And I tend to the self reliant side, but I'm far from a survivalist. I have no bunker, or stores of seed from Y2K. And while I'm more or less pro military, I've never claimed to be a veteran. My dad was, and my nephew is in the military, and I thought about it, more than a few times, but chose another path. Just to clarify. I admire the hell out of Mal's character , but unlike him, I never volunteered for the war. Not yet, at least.

I was fortunate, no mystery illnesses or crashes for me and my grandma on our Alaska cruise.

Another thought occurs, the passengers probably couldn't jump because of the height of the cruise ship (some are 14 stories above the water) and the depth to the bottom (apparently high enough that on one side a rock could be lodged on the ship's fifth story).

I was also mildly disappointed by excursions and how expensive everything was, it really would be cheaper, less crowded, and less stressful to do things on your own. The only part of the trip that would have been difficult to see if I weren't on a cruise would have been Glacier bay, which is worth it, but there are other tide water glaciers around too.

I tried doing self guided tours eventually on the trip, all it takes is knowing how to read a bus schedule. However, the excursions or the cruise itself might still be good if someone with you has special considerations, my grandmother has a bad back and ankle, and so walking isn't easy for her.

Well, enough has come out now that we have somewhat of a grasp on the stoy. I heard that exchange between the captain and the Italian Coast Guard...pretty amazing. He sounds like someone who wasn't really capable or responsible and just wanted to get the hell out of there and save his own skin. Despite being ordered to get back on board, apparently he never did.

One couple was interviewed who survived, said he was in a lifeboat and people in the water saw him in amazement. I hope they throw the book at him, and someone should look closer into Carnival; a good number of things have gone wrong on their cruises which is coming to light.

I've heard that he was standing on shore, calling his grandmother to tell her he was okay, too. Sounds like a pretty ignorant guy who was just good enough to steer a boat, but little else.

Sad, sickening affair all around.
