The Verse In Numbers 2.0 now Available

Alpha Centauri is only about 4.4 light years away from us. It is a triple star system made up of Alpha Centauri A and B and Proxima Centauri.

So while the Verse may not be possible, it is not that far from reality.

Actually, I've done luminosity calculations based on the distances of the planets to their respective suns.

The far suns from the planets around the helioformed gas giants will look like tiny points of light, barely brighter than stars. Similarly, helioformed gas giants will look like stars or very bright planets as well, even from the edge planets on the main solar disks. However, planets close to their respective sun or helioformed gas giant get QUITE a bit of light.

For example, either the planet "Shadow" was meant as a nominal joke, or the proximity to Murphy makes for a very stormy weather pattern. I calculated midday brightness on Shadow to be about 6 times the amount we get from the sun. Make sure you wear UV protection if you ever visit! Not that you would, because it's blackrock now.

I'm guessing that in order for the very far planets to be habitable, gravity technology similar to helioforming has been used to compress them from their original size and that most of the surface heat is coming from the geothermal gradient.

The current thinking is that multi-star systems are very common, much more so than was previously thought. Joss appears to have been ahead of the curve on that one, by at least a few years.

The other important element is the gravitational effects. The stable orbits could take some strange shapes.

Both TVN and the ARC are absolutely amazing. Thank you so much from yet another fan obsessed with the astronomy of Firefly. I still remember watching Train Job when it first aired and being overjoyed to see a science fiction show where the entire "verse" took place in one solar system (okay, a 5-star system, but still).
