This kind of stuff just depresses the hell out of me. Why is our culture dominated by crap? Why do we put up with it? I just want to scream from the rooftops to wake people up, to try and get them to put down the beer, stop watching the goddamned commercials and pay attention to what they're being fed. Its not just some fans of a canceled show who are being cheated. Our entire culture is being dumbed down and drugged up by those who seek power over us. We're falling asleep in front of our televisions and letting our souls get sucked away while we snooze.

If he ever manages to revive the Buffyverse, any new show really needs to only have one or two Buffy/Angel characters (unless of course it was a direct continuation of Angel). I lot of people seem to think they should just get as many existing characters together as possible but I think that would be a huge mistake.

Very passionately & eloquently put Sarge. I could not have said it better myself.

I have gotten to the point where I watch very little TV. The preponderance of reality shows on the air now is overwhelming. I do not think there is a single channel on cable (w/ perhaps the exception of the Cartoon Network) that doesn't have at least one reality show in its lineup.

Many of the shows that are not reality are mere carbon copies of programs that have gone before them. The premise of many shows has been done so many times that it is numbing to even try to sit through 10 minutes of such a program.

Books have become my main source for entertainment of late. Quality television seems to be all but forgotten on television in the networks search for ratings. I still watch 2 or 3 shows on a regular basis, but I imagine those too will soon be gone as well.

I feel that this is a symptom that TV is broken, when you look at it. We now have the capacity for Video On Demand, but we are still trying to get cable a la carte. The TV industry is in the same boat as the music industry, their business model is quickly becoming outdated. With a show like Firefly, I really would not mind paying for episodes directly, so long as there were reduced/eliminated ads and were not on a timeslot setup (Video On Demand). A system like this could be made to work, but the current system will try to stop it (see: the music industry). Eventually, the industry will piss off enough fans for the fans to reinvent the industry, I hope.

I don't wish to be argumentative because I agree with most of what you said. Crap sells because that's what people tune in for. Sad but true.

I do think, however, that the execs lately are making a mistake by making all their decisions based on a shows ability to attract viewers rapidly out of the gate rather than its ability to establish a reliable wide-ranging audience. They do the same thing with movies, pronouncing verdicts on a movie's success based on the first week's ticket sales. All they're really looking at is the success of the promotional campaign, and we know how weak and misguided that was in Firefly's case.

I also must disagree with your assertion that we, as a group haven't "put up with it". First I should first clarify that I meant 'we' as a nation of viewers, not our smallish community of fans. And in that sense 'we' most certainly have put up with an endless tide of offensive garbage.

Most television viewers will agree that the vast majority of television is worthless but they continue to watch. That's what I have a hard time understanding. I have my own theories about commercialism and indoctrination but that's perhaps better saved for another thread.

But I would be curious to know: How many of us here are still watching television? How often? How many are still watching Fox? I'm not condemning anyone, but I do believe that they won't start airing quality television until we flat out refuse to tune in.

I have not sat down and watched broadcast/cable TV in a long time. 6 months atleast. Have EverQuest and DVDs for entertainment and my business to keep me busy. Right now I am wishing someone would make an offer: "If you will give up TV for a year we will pay you one million dollars." Seem to remember something like that in TV guide several years ago. Would have to make it just broadcast or cable TV though. No way would I give up DVDs

I am not worried about the bullet with my name on it. Just the thousands marked "Occupant".

You got me wondering why I like reality shows such as Survivor and Amazing Race. Heck, I was even watching Big Brother here for a few minutes tonight.

I think I like watching the reality shows because I don't know or can't figure out what's going to happen next, and because I can't pigeonhole the characters to stereotypes.

Which if the executives thought about it is what Joss Whedon is very good at creating in the way of stories; those with different characters and stories that are uncertain.

Then again, maybe I like to watch reality just to see whats going to happen to the characters, or to one or two of them? Maybe this is why I got suckered onto General Hospital for a while after I was made to watch it for a class project long ago?

Soap Operas, Reality Shows... both cheap to make.

When it gets down to it, it is just about $$$ isn't it?

For the past 13 years, I've lived in a broadcast shadow, and I choose not to have cable. I watch TV shows on DVD (~100 discs). A bonus, for me, is that I got to see Firefly in the proper order.
