While all the news is about Washington's little shaker, a real one was happening elsewhere:

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck northern Peru on Wednesday, authorities said.

The quake's epicenter was about 350 miles (570 kilometers) northeast of the country's capital, Lima, and 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Pucallpa, Peru, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Authorities at the Geophysics Institute of Peru said no victims or significant damage had been reported. At least one aftershock had been recorded, the institute said.

Lima residents felt a brief, but strong, tremor.

I find it so sad that the biggies tend to hit more often than not in places where they do the most damage, while countries with solid infrastructures don't seem to suffer as many. Just ironic, I know, but sad nonetheless.

Just wanted to say that I was in Court in NE Ohio yesterday and suddenly the room felt like it was moving. I thought I'd just taken too much allergy medicine when the cop next to me said "do you feel that" and I looked up and the flags behind the Judge were moving and we took a short break to figure out what it was.

Very cool. I felt the earth...move...under my feet...

Also related note my brother owns a business in northern Virginia and was on the phone with my dad when the quake hit. He was ok and no damage.

I'm glad neither you nor any of yours were harmed. That your first trembler? It's funny; if it weren't so dangerous, I'd actually LIKE 'quakes. They're kinda "fun-weird", that reminder of how infinite the Earth is and how tiny we are. Luckily, out here we get lotsa little ones that I can enjoy and know have done no harm. The big ones, nobody enjoys!

Same with lightning. I ADORE it, and the thunder reverberating through my bod. But we get little of it here, as were covered with hills--it strikes out in the Bay and East of us, but rarely here. Recently I watched a TV documentary on it (and on a woman who was struck standing at her kitchen sink!) and it pretty much brought home to me what others endure in places where they get literally thousands of strikes in a short period of time. We're lucky if we get ten in a season, so my opinion of lightning has changed dramatically (but I still love the few we get ;o)!)

ETA: I just KNEW when I wrote that "I agree" that it was going to show up in your sig. That's okay, in that instance I DID agree with you, and it's better than the previous quote. I can live with it.

I felt this one! My room started swaying and at first it didn't register that it was a quake, but after a few seconds I realized what was happening and started to leave the house when it stopped. It was short lived but we sure felt it here in southern Ecuador.

Glad you're okay. I wonder if CTS felt it since she lives in Peru.

I know what you mean Niki, I really enjoy weather and earth events, they're fun. As long as no one gets hurt of course. I have lots of dreams about earthquakes for some reason.

I liked it a lot less last night !

Strike landed within 100 feet of me, so close I could literally TASTE it in the back of my throat, and wigged me out good given that I was soaking wet at the time AND it hit the power lines and melted em, knockin out power here for hours - thus sending me running back to the office for more lights, and the blackout kit, which includes a crank-powered cellphone charger with universal adaptor, cause I am nothin if not prepared.

Frem, I'm glad you're allright, sounds scary. I love lightning and thunder, but I've never had a close call with it either. Its the primal force of it, raw, something I'm no match for, that I can only stand in awe of, all that fierce power exploding around me (but hopefully not too close of course).

I'm glad that our poster in Ecuador is okay from that earthquake.

Actually my nemesis is the wind, if it catches just right between the buildings it gets REALLY strong, and with my gear weighing me down, and the prosthetic leg not giving me as much balance, it'll catch my jacket or raincoat and blow me right onto my ass, since imma little guy to begin with, WHAM.

Followed by a very feline "I meant to do that" kind of reaction as I get up and brush the leaves and pine needles off...

And spiderwebs, yick, my work shift takes place exactly during the period of still air (in nicer weather) when spiders spin their webs, and so all damn night long I am running into the blasted things and swipin em off my face, ptooie, spit, yick - and end of the night I wind up coming the rest of it outta my hair, not to mention sometimes you get the spider with it, which is kinda pissed about having it's house wrecked up, and since they have full venom at that point if they DO bite you it stings like a bitch.

Did I mention I really HATE freakin spiders...
Oh and not wee little spiders no, of course no, fregamekkin HUGE ones, although not australian-deathworld huge, thanks be.

Boy, Little, I'll just BET you did! Sounds like it lasted a bit too...those are the worst, 'cuz you know there's a better chance it did damage somewhere. I hope your aftershocks are minimal, and I'm glad you're okay. May you not have another for a VERY long time!
