Gee, I'm surprised to see others enjoy that sort of thing, too. I shouldn't be, I suppose, as you're right, Riona, they trigger something primal in some humans, but I always felt like I was the only nutcase around.
We were camping up the Coast a lot time ago and a big storm moved in. Our camper was right on the bluffs of Mendocino, and we could watch it approach the Coast, wind getting higher all the time. Jim and the dogs went in, but I just stood on top of a big rock, closed my eyes and enjoyed it. Until the rain started pounding down...then I scurried for cover with them!

Ahh, Frem, you have my sympathy, believe me. The wind in the "canyons" of SF (the financial district) can get downright fierce sometimes, and when I used to motorcycle in to work, I always dreaded coming down or going back the Waldo Grade to the Golden Gate. The fog rolls in right over the hills there, and it moves CARS--on a motorcycle it's downright scary!

As for spiders, I have the same problem as you in a way. There's this one spider--never seen him, but I know it's him--who weaves his web right across the entrance to the Outback every friggin' DAY...so every night I go to bed, I go right through his web, and at night I can't see it well. He's not an Orb Weaver, 'cuz his attempt at a web is straight across the entrance.
I love Orb Weavers, their webs are so gorgeous. And they can get HUGE...Jim and I were shocked to see one in the junipers by College of Marin long ago, sucker was almost a foot from end to end! We get a lot of little ones in Spring, and I just move them away from the Outback; they're so pretty and I don't kill things if I can avoid it. Except earwigs, I HATE earwigs and they totally freak me out! Don't like spiders, either, tho' I'll try hard to move them when they're indoors, THEY give me the willies too. Snakes I love; spiders, not so much!

Well, for the most part, so far as I know, and as a general rule, anything that weaves a standing web won't do you too much harm, bitewise, but anything that builds a funnel type web you wanna stay the everliving hell away from - not only do those bastards have nasty bites, they're ambush hunters, most of em, and will jump on you and bite you with little or no provocation...
Which I why I got NO problem with getting my pocket torch and roasting the little evil monsters when they (funnel weavers) take up residence in, on or near one of my punch key boxes, cause I know damn well if I don't they're gonna jump on my hand and sink those nasty little fangs in, and whatever breed this is around here, that feels like broken glass grinding through your hand for like a WEEK...
Natural selection, the way I look at it, anything stupid enough to not respect my "turf" shouldn't breed anyways - besides which, anything that considers ME a potential food product, IMHO that's fair game to view IT as potential food product, but I draw the line at bugs... mostly.
That drew serious hilarity from MickT when some damn non-poisonous snake bit me, got kicked off, came back and bit me AGAIN, on purpose, and it was *ON*, THAT little bastard was DINNER, curse his nasty sharp little teeth, grrr 
We'll see who eats who, ha!
