Get your facts straight, Mike. I noted that the Republican Congressional leadership excused (oops. "excused") them in previous sessions. Unless you're under the mistaken impression that I was part of the Republican Congressional leadership at that time, your "logic" doesn't hang together.

You're asserting an action on my part (That I "excused" Vitter or Ensign's actions) that has no basis in fact or evidence to support it. By the standards that you consistantly apply to other people's similar statements, you are lying.

I don’t necessarily believe that is true. You’ve got to get enough voters to CARE about “better candidates”, as well as enough voters who think for themselves and don’t just swallow what they’re fed. I don’t see that happening any time in the future, I’m afraid.

Listening to a pundit this morning (I rarely even tune in the news lately, too depressing and frustrating) talk about the GOP debate and mention that so-and-so “looked Presidential”. They went on discussing it and someone mentioned we don’t elect ugly people. That says a lot, right there, and explains a lot of the people that DO get elected!

Your example of Rhode Island is a great one, BUT...how long will that person remain in office and what will replace him? How do you get enough people to elect enough good legislators at the same time to do anything valid? I don’t like EITHER party; I vote according to who I think is the least-worst candidate, as it seems I’ve done all my life. Luckily, we DO have some good people representing us in Congress and the Senate, where I live, and I fight to keep them in office. But that won’t last, and we’ll get another Govenator, another Reagan, etc., down the line, I have no doubt.

As to getting better candidates, I don’t have to, here. We’ve got good ones (all female, I might note). Luckily Nancy Pelosi doesn’t represent me... But I’m sorry; for every Hardware I see who wants better Republicans, I see ten people who swallow the bullshit fed them to get elected, then find out AFTER THE FACT that they got took...then go and do it again. Same for Democrats, no doubt, although it’s been my experience that they do MORE of what they promised, especially recently, when the GOP screamed “jobs” to get elected, then went right on to put forth their social agenda and haven’t done shit about jobs.

Your argument about a “harder stance” fails completely, too. Mike tackled that one perfectly; I spent time looking up my own response, but deleted it ‘cuz he did it much better. We’ll see what the future brings, that will tell the tale, but I’m not holding my breath when it comes to EITHER side! You and Mike can go back and forth all you want; one instance and a “current session” only six months old doesn’t mean a trend, any way you want to look at it. Your suggestion that MAYBE this represents a trend will have to be seen over time, but I don’t give it any weight, myself.

Oh, Jezus, Raptor; Palin didn’t “accurately describe” anything of the kind, and yes, I think it’s a non-story. Funny, but not NEARLY worth the coverage it got. So you fail on both counts. By the way, you should give up on the 57 states thing. For every one of those you come up with, anyone can counter with a dozen idiotic mistakes or misquotes from someone on the right. Plus, you’ve used it so many times now, it’s ridiculous.

Cav, I dunno. I tend to think it’s more about people who get power thinking the rules don’t apply to them. You can look all the way back to Rome for powerful people acting in ways that are shocking, and getting away with it for a long time, until the empire fell. It’s nothing new that people in power do stupid things, and I believe it’s because theyv’e seen others get away with stuff and think in their position the rules don’t apply. I don’t think it’s about power per see, just the belief that power makes one invulnerable.

Combined with social media, which makes it possible for people to do more unacceptable things over the internet than they would DREAM of doing in person. What Weiner did isn’t even that abnormal, it’s being done daily by many, from what I’ve read. I dunno WHY, and women don’t seem to be doing it that much, but it’s out there and people do it. I do
