The truth of a person is who they are when all the secrets are out. This man, Anthony Weiner, does not feel better than everyone else now that his secret is out. Back when he was acting out, acting AS IF he were better than others, he was compensating for his catastrophically low self-worth.

Y'see, they WANT you to think they're big and tough and don't care about the weak because that is the narrative in which they are most powerful and intensely masculine. The narratives in their heads, however, that fuel their acting out, even their choice of profession sometimes, tell them that they are weak and ugly and must take what they want because no one--no woman, in Weiner's case--would willingly give them what they desire.

Was John Ensign told to resign when his C-Street buddies learned of his affair and worked together to break the law and try to buy his way out of the mess?

So when EXACTLY did this "harder stance" start coming into play for the Republicans? The day after Weiner's press conference?

For the record, the answer to all of the above questions about Republicans being "told to resign" in the wake of their transgressions is "NO." None of them were "told to resign"; hell, none of them were even ASKED to resign.

Vitter was re-elected. And he was given a standing ovation when he returned to the Senate after news of his scandal broke. He's still there four years later. Oddly, he hasn't resigned (but he HAS had his diaper changed a few times).

Larry Craig served out his Senate term, too.

Mark Sandford just left office in January 2011. Obviously this new "harder stance" is something that must have come into play in the last 5 months, then...

John Ensign finally *DID* resign on May 3 of this year, little more than a month ago, despite his scandal breaking in 2008. And he only resigned when it became increasingly clear that he was in all likelihood going to be thrown out of the Senate for his various and plentiful ethics violations. He may well still face criminal charges.

So this whole "harder stance" thing is something the GOP came up with just in the last month, it seems.

Not that I'm dismissing it all, as I see there's certainly merit to what you're saying.

I'll never forget the smirk and arrogance that Charles Rangel had, when asked about his ethics issues. Rangel basically laughed, and told the reporter, why would he be worried about anything happening to him, when HE was the chairman of the committee which was investigating him! He basically was stating that, 'I run that committee, and if you think anything will come of this, you're delusional. ' Same sort of arrogance and elitist attitude displayed by Weiner.

It goes back to the line from the movie, Matilda... " I'm smart; you're dumb. I'm big; you're little. I'm right, you're wrong."

That's how the politicians like Weiner and Rangel think.
