Couples by end of season

I saw this over at the Buffy room and it got me thinking about Firefly. There are tons of 'ships out there. Some I agree with and some I don't. (Truthfully, I think Mal and Jayne are straight) So, I was thinking who would get together by season's end. If anyone.
Wash and Zoe are together. They seem like they are a happy married couple. Key word- happy. We all now Joss doesn't like couples to be happy and together for long.(Xander/Anya,Gunn/Fred anyone?) Then again if they were to break up, one of them would have to go. The ship wouldn't be big enough. Yet, something tells me Joss is mature enough (and Zoe and Wash are cute enough) to let them stay together. 
Now on to the rest of the crew.
Mal-Inara. You can tell he's got a crush on her and she's all crazy about him. Maybe the only reason she stays on the crew. Here's the thing, I don't think Mal will be with someone who sleeps with other people for money. Plus, I get the feeling ME will let these two drag out. If they do get together it won't be this season. Maybe mid way through season 2 or early season 3. (knock on wood fo future seasons)
Kaylee and Simon. Ok, these two are just cute together. They might get together by season's end. 'Cause I can't be happy with just the drunk bonding/pulling out chairs. I need kissage! But, one thing stands in the way-River. She's a great girl that feels bad about Simon always having to give things up to help her, but Simon's so busy with her. I doubt he'd have much time for Kaylee. Of course he could always have Shepherd "Scary Hair" Book watch River, so he and Kaylee can go out.
Jayne. Something tells me he won't be dating any of his crew mates this season. (Though I have read some good River/Jayne stories, I gotta say I'm becoming a fan)
River. Same thing as Jayne. River's sick. And even if she does get better,she'll never be 100% sane. She'll always be a little off and I don't think any guys on the ship could handle her. So, no lovin' for River this season.
Book. He's like a Dad or something to the ladies. And can he even date?
Just MHOs.

Considering how much bickering and butting of heads Mr. Wheadon had to do to GET a married couple on the show, possibility number one seems unlikely. However, put the marriage on the rocks for a while, then reconcile? That seems more in character.
M/I - I'd just as soon leave it to the fanfic writers. (there's already a full-blown M/I RST fic in this page's archives, and I'm working on one myself). But a one-nighter or on-again/off-again (John/Aeryn comes to mind) rocky road might be in the cards.
S/K...that's a very likely possibility, IMO. There isn't much in the way of it. Heck, I think River would be shoving her big bro in that direction if she could keep a cohesive thought in her head for more than a few seconds.

I think I have to concur.
Z/W will stay together. no divorce in sight. maybe one of them might look out for others but they'll work it out.
M/I will be an issue up to season 7 but they'll never be a happy couple. she's just too proud to give up her (very respectable and legal) job for him. and he'll freak out every day that she actually goes to work. he doess it even now, if he ever sleeps with her, and I think he will rather sooner than later, he's going to freak out more than ever. they'll be fighting like hell and loving each other more for it.
K/S will come together and may be a happy couple for a while. one with enough differences to keep it from getting boring. they are cute, both of 'em. eventually they will part ways though because they are just too cute. but they will be best friends then, both all the time trying to match the other one up with someone (is that understandable english?). I predict lots of nice K/S moments in all coming seasons. and I sure can see River giving her brother a nudge someday soon to go and get it over with. she'll be better soon, now that Simon knows how to treat her.
and I honestly can't see any sane female having anything romantic to do with Jayne. but maybe he's gay and the boys like him, or he's so good in bed, that a girl comes along who's desperate enough for good sex to take him in.
River has to get better to get any attention is this direction. but I can see Jayne interested in her. I just hope she has enough of her mind together to say NO!
Book is a preacher, they are not supposed to be sexy. he'll stay that way - I hope.
have I forgotten anyone? no I thing that's all of them. but it's just my two euro-cent.

Don't forget Badger was rather taken with River.
Actually, even before, (especially before?) "Ariel" I considered Jayne/River, just because, as you say, everyone else who might get together seemed to be leaning in that direction, leaving them for each other. I could see it because after what she's been through, River might think the most important quality in a man is physical strength and size and dirty survivalistic fighting skills. Didn't Patty Hearst marry her police bodyguard? Also because Jayne's brain operates on about 15 watts, I think his company might be rather restful for River, (when he's not plotting dark violence against her), rather like pre-cog-ing a rutabaga.
For his part, Jayne would never be able to understand a single thing River says, whatever her mental state, but at least he'd have someone to make sure his tax forms were filled out correctly.

Hmmmm...couples. My own preference would be:
Wash/Zoe: Stay together happily. Yes, I know, I'm boring. *grin*
Mal/Inara: Not together by the end the season, but finally able to actually admit to each other that they're interested. Big time. Personally, I'd be overjoyed at seeing some kissage (er, the kind where both parties are conscious), but I don't see that happening.
Simon/Kaylee/Jayne: I'd like very much to see this triangle -- I thought I saw it developing earlier, but the latest eps didn't seem to have much of it. Jayne seems to be interested (in his own blockheaded sort of way) in Kaylee. Simon -- after poor Kaylee nearly needed a 2x4 to get his attention -- has realized that Kaylee's rather nice. Jayne and Simon had this great one-upmanship thing going on in the earlier episodes (Jayne tricking Simon into putting on the environment suit; Simon later returning the favor, etc.); I had to wonder if some of that rivalry had anything to do with their mutual interest in Kaylee. I'd like to see that continue. Kaylee, I think, while focused on Simon, would also be open to Jayne if he managed to do something nice for her. She already seems very comfortable with him (sitting up on his shoulders for the basketball game) and well, heck, she's just sweet to everyone.
Mind you, I'm not saying Jayne would be good for Kaylee. Much as I love the big lug, I wouldn't wish him on anyone as a lovematch. I just think a triangle between the three of them would make for an interesting continuation of their dynamic.
Okay, okay -- maybe I just wanna see Jayne break his own rule and kiss 'er on the mouth...

I don't know - a Jayne really badly, crazy in love could be very funny. Just imagine what ideas he would come up with to impress his love interest. For instance
- she can shoot Vera
- she can play with his favorite knifes

Honestly, I'm not sure that Jayne could be that self-sacrificing, at least not without a lot of character growth. Those relationships that he's been in have either been Jayne groupies (re: Jaynestown) where he jumped in and used his purported fame for all it was worth, or ... well, probably not Companions, but likely prostitutes.
What we've seen of Jayne to date suggests that he is the center of his own universe, and that (in his opinion) any potential female companionship has to think that too.
History doesn't always repeat itself. Sometimes it merely shouts "Weren't you listening the first time?!?" and lets fly with a club.
