I hope this doesn't set off other earthquakes in the region. And volcanoes. And tsunamis. I'd vacate from coastal and island regions as much as possible in the meantime.

As for the initial question about catastrophes, unfortunately I think they must have always happened at the current rate, we're just more aware of all of them because of the internet.

I think Byte might be right, we're a lot more aware of all the things that happen lately with the news and the Internet, its just that Megansdaughter's part of the world is having some difficulties just now, with floods and quakes, things will probably settle down soon and some other part of the world will have things to handle.

Terrible to hear. Not aware of much quake activity in NZ, though I do see that it sits on the edge of a tectonic plate....

Jesus christ Mags do you ever post anything that is not a disaster....Floods in queensland, wild fires in queensland, e.Quakes in New zealand?

Just to continue to keep people informed, the toll has risen to 123 with about another 200 missing and at this stage it is presumed no more survivors will be found. One of the big questions now, is whether Christchurch, a beautful city and a major economic and tourist centre of NZ will ever be viable.
