I'm ashamed of this place

I've been encouraging Jennifer to come here, to meet the good people who sent me to the Gulf and to engage in some spirited debates. But after two weeks mostly away, I'm probably going to ask her not to come after all. This place is almost nothing but vitriol and childish back-and-forths of the very worst kind.
The sad thing is, some of the very people who are the ugliest would find her like them in many of her views. She's pro-gun, believes welfare should be seriously reformed, is an atheist, hates Obama and the way he's "tried" to fix things, is hard-core on treatment of children and the education system (you’d LOVE her, Frem, you really would!), is for states’ rights and many things that put her at odds with my stands. We talked for two hours or more the last night I was there, but we were able to DISCUSS and DEBATE our differences and still remain friends. She is about as far from a “liberal” as you can get, and I thought how much fun she would have here exchanging views with other Browncoats, which she is enthusiastically.
But after reading the past day or so I’ve been back, I think RWE is a disgrace to Browncoats everywhere. Not only would it be viewed with disgust by all but one of the characters on Firefly, I believe the same would be true of the cast who portrayed them, and Joss as well. His views may be controversial to some, but I couldn’t imagine him EVER sinking to the depths of what I read on RWE every day. He’d no doubt take it with equanimity given it’s the internet, but it’s nonetheless a terrible reflection of what we all supposedly respect and admire about him and Firefly.
I’m now on the growing list of those who will come here less, which I’m sure will please the very people who have reduced this forum to what it has become. If it keeps up, they will be the only ones talking to themselves, which is probably what they’re aiming for. I’m afraid they’ll find it not to THEIR liking, either, if they manage it. I accept it's always been vitriolic, but now it's little more than playground name calling of the kind that you wouldn't find on ANY actual playground.
And I put you, Mike, in the same category as them. While SOMEWHAT less “gutterally” inclined, you foster the worst RWE has to offer and only serve to encourage the kind of ugliness which has driven others away and is driving me away. I don’t want Jennifer to come here; I’m ashamed of what she’d find and I respect her too much to have her know how low supposed Browncoats can sink. All in all, it’s a shame, she'd be a great addition to what this forum is supposed to be about.
Go for it trolls; respond in ways that illustrate what I’m saying.

Another view of this is that this place represents in its' own way the realities and passions felt by people all over the county. If it occasionally gets nasty, then I believe it's just a sign of the times and not necessarily a terrible thing. But the endless back and forth insults with profanity and vulgarity between some here does eventually erode the place to a small handful of posters. You should keep posting topics because they're usually interesting or annoying for me.

Niki, it gets like this around election time. That's the long and the short of it. And...Firefly isn't gettin' any less dead. So...less and less new blood. And yet, you found us. Others will, too. And PN will subside again. And Kaneman is already showing signs of exhaustion.
I figger, if the midterms go as I expect, Kane et al. will fold. But if they're right and the Republican rebranding was a success, then Kane & Co. will do a lot of gloating and a lot of rewriting history and the whole country will be in deep shit, which will, in all likelihood actually increase the relevance of the discussions in this forum. Win/win? 
So, by all means, join the ranks of those of us who have taken extended vacations from this place, but do come back and see what's new from time to time.

In some ways, Niki, I see the internet as the way human beings are finally gonna grow up, a kind of world-wide catharsis machine that just might finally be our means, as a species, to put our demons to rest--or at least tire them out so thoroughly with daily exercise, that we can get on with our real lives in relative peace. Y'see the number one most psychologically destructive lie we tell ourselves is that our craziness is unique--that we're "the only one" that feels this way. The internet is here to prove us wrong. Never before have human beings on such a grand scale had such freedom to just let all the bats out of our belfries for all to see with no consequence worse than some total stranger responding in kind!
I think, ultimately, it's good that folk have an outlet, a very public and far-reaching outlet for all the fucktard/cocksucker/cunt/faggot/sand nigger/nazi/pinko/jew world order ranting they've got bottled up inside. Because it's not just some mouth-breathing wacko living in some basement or other with a Nazi flag on his wall and an empty pesticide canister on his shelf who thinks like this--we ALL think like this. It's what we do with these thoughts that really matters and airing them out in internet fora like this is one hell of a lot better use than some I can think of.
If I'm right, the tea party phenom will prove to be the perfect example of what I'm talking about. People rant and scream and threaten for several months at a time, but come election day, actual votes will not be given to these would-be entertainers--not enough to bring about their wackadoo revolution, at any rate.

As someone who's needed time off from RWED as well, I understand what you're saying. But I hope you come to the same realization I have over the years: this place is not ideal, and never will be. It may be Firefly and isn't that cute that we all like the same sci-fi TV show and we call ourselves Browncoats and know the same jokes and all that, but hey - that's actually pretend. We're not really the crew of a ship. We're real people, and real people include assholes who like to mix it up. (Actually, the crew of the Firefly did too - with fists and knives!)
I think you'd do well to lower your expectations and learn to overlook the bad stuff. You don't really have much choice, because it's the internet and the flaming will never go away. You'll have to find a way to keep it from getting to you, or go on being bummed over it, or give it up entirely. You're setting yourself up for disappointment by hoping for any other option.
As for the back and forth between Mike and the asshole brigade - let it go, hon. It's annoying, but it's not your problem. They're grown-ups, and they get into it because they like to. You can choose to not take it seriously. Really, you can.

It's great that you have the courage to go against your fellow cultural and political kindred spirits and post the truth here. As for both of us climbing out of the gutter; I never said or thought you were ever there. You took a lot of the worst nasty stuff ever written here, and you took it well. I came to a point one day where I couldn't do it any more, and I started to detest participating in it. Someone above said that your posts tend to irritate the other side. Cav, I’m sad to see what you think is catharsis...rather I see it as people feeling they have the right to be as ugly as they want without any responsibility or reprisals. It’s the freedom of a cowardly bully, nothing more, and I see it as encouraging them to hate MORE and be more obvious about it. I don’t see it as anything good, only exposure, as you said, of just how many hateful and/or crazy people there are in our country. I see it as the crazies finding out they’re not alone finding support among others like them, feeling empowered by that support and even freer to voice their hatred BECAUSE they’re not alone.
And I disagree wholeheartedly that we “all” think like this. I’ve never thought about anyone else in my whole life the kinds of things I read here people feel about each other. I do, however, hope you’re right, in that the Tea Party will make the crazies feel so empowered that they turn all but those like them against them. They ARE in the minority, however surprising it is to find out how many of them there are, so hopefully they won’t get to achieve their agendas.
Mal4, I NEVER expected “ideal” or even anything approaching it. I’ve been on the internet for over a decade and seen how ugly people can get, but nowhere except the other Firefly site and this one have I seen such consistent ugliness, such inability to communicate or debate on such a scale. Most place people have SOME sense of decency, however little it might be...but maybe that’s because most of my previous experience has been on mental-health sites, where we all know we have demons so try for the most part to keep them In check, I dunno. I know full well that politics and religion get heated, but to the extent simply hating someone allows such incredibly reprehensible flame wars isn’t what I’d expect of most people.
And no, I don’t have any fantasies about Firefly...if anything, I believe in JOSS, not some TV show, but admire Firefly because I think it is more a reflection of Joss than any of his other work, which he says as well. I respect good acting, but far more I respect good writing, and his is wonderful. That’s pretty much what instigated me to, for the first time in my life, seek out a fan site.
I’m not bummed out about it; I mention it from time to time because I find it disgusting and speak my mind. I have a third choice you didn’t mention; spend less time involved in it. I DO ignore the idiocy thrown my way more these days, it’s so pathetic as to not be worth any attention; it’s the fact that recently it’s become, more than anything else, a place for the ugliest of us to overrun everyone else, thereby making communication virtually impossible sometimes on the initial subject. I feel like “why bother?” I still come here, and will, and will try to post things of interest which are other than the slather of hate, personal obscene attacks, bigotry and racism that dominates this place at present. But the question is why should I spend as much time here when most of what I read is just a waste of my time? The point of this post was that I find I cannot recommend this place to someone I respect who would be a positive voice for debate and discussion, because debate and discussion are virtually impossible here, which is the opposite of what I thought of when I first suggested she come.
As for Mike, the only reason it in any way bothers me is that I have had innumerable e-mails from him in the past saying “ignore them” and saying he was going to, yet I’ve never seen any change in his own behavior. It’s ironic, and he is the main one by FAR on the “other side” who engages in almost exactly the same level of ugliness that I see from those who want nothing but to troll and threadjack. Otherwise, it wouldn’t even come up. I dislike double standards from people for whom I felt respect and liked.

I would add that in some cases it is no more than a desire for attention by people who have nothing valid to say on ANY subject, like any child will seek negative attention if nothing else is available. It's only (ONLY) the fatuous, assinine, repulsive phraseology that I abhor, and how people get triggered into responding in kind, which makes threads totally futile to engage in. I understand the intent and the purpose fully.
The only wish for moderation I would express is just a BIT of restraint imposed on the most idotic obscenity, so that I didn't have to ignore the lack of self-control expressed, or watch others who might have something of value to say instead encourage it. Nothing more, no other moderation, no other restraint, even personal attacks are fine with me. I’ve learned to ignore the tripe, but it means ignoring more than I bother to read a lot of the time. That’s all.
Why would I encourage anyone I like or respect to come here and be subjected to it? It's a reflection of the worst in some people's human nature which would preclude any sensible person from wanting to engage. Simple as that.
