Mike Dalton wrote about his Firefly card set on September 19,2009: "I like the Vintage T206 baseball cards and the simplicity of their design so I decided to do a set of my own with a contemporary subject. There will be ten cards, the firefly cast and Serenity. Can't wait to get them all done to post and see how they look as a final set!! "

On October 4, Mike Dalton continued: "These drawings were done to be printed 1.4 by 2.6 inches. The original is approximately three to four times larger. When the whole set is done I will provide a template or a large file you can use to print them out."

The art work and the cards printed on paper are here:

Zoë portrait, sized like a baseball trading card, has arrived after seven months wait. Five cards done; five to go.

While we're waiting for Mike Dalton to finish the last cards, mleiv (a woman from Seattle, Washington) has started and completed a similar project consisting of nine 2.5"x3.5" portraits in pencil.
As a reader, your project is to compare and contrast styles between the two artists.

Many thanks !

My preference is definitely more for the mleiv works ; the likenesses are consistently truer to character .

While we're waiting for Mike Dalton to finish his ten (or maybe only nine) cards, Ashleigh Michelle created three 2.5" x 3.5" sketch cards in india ink and marker on bristol board.

What are Artist Trading Cards? They are http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Artist+Trading+Card individual art miniatures which pass hand to hand. Some sources have credited M. Vänçi Stirnemann, who began trading sessions in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1997, as popularizing ATCs in the modern era, although modern ATC's can be traced back to portrait miniatures and to a kind of business card popular with Impressionistic era artists.

Artists have produced miniatures for trade or self-promotion in many eras and places, and the current trend is thus part of this larger context. Historically there were few standard rules or guidelines to art trading cards, and many variances in sizes can be seen in older cards. The standardization in size of baseball cards is credited with creating the standardization in size for art cards. Today the only rule for these cards is their 2.5 by 3.5 inch size, same as baseball cards and collectible card games. There are, however, certain conventions usually observed by those who make and trade these cards, such as the expectation that they be traded, not sold, and that they be created as unique works or small limited editions of prints. Artists generally sign and date the back, and may also include a title and contact information. The face-to-face trading session is considered an integral part of the concept, although many people find each other via the internet and trade by mail.

Mike Dalton's 6th and 7th cards in his Firefly series. Inara, River, and, maybe, Serenity, to complete the set of Artist's Trading Cards.

Mike Dalton wrote about the River artist trading card, “I think that a little more tweaking will be in order for this one. Still like it. Inara and Serenity will be the final two for the set.”

The tenth and last image in the artist trading card series by Mike Dalton. The first card was finished last year, September 2009. Although this card may appear to be smaller than the other nine, it is really the same 791×438, rotated clockwise.
