from what i've been reading, The Current New beetle IS discontinued. they should have a NEW Version, or 2 announced by the end of the year, and based on completely different platforms.

Well, yeah - but only in the sense that the Fox-body Mustang was discontinued, to be replaced by something more modern and quite a bit better. Whenever a car goes through a generational change (usually at around four years of age), it gets "discontinued". It gets replaced with a new design, often on an all-new platform, and very few parts will interchange. The New Beetle is ANCIENT in modern-car terms, having been around without any significant redesign for over a dozen years now. Trust me, it's well beyond due for a make-over.
When you speak of a car model being "discontinued", it tends to be a rather different idea than saying it's been redesigned or re-imagined. The Chevy Camaro, for instance, was discontinued. They killed it, stopped making them, and had no plans to start again. The Pontiac Firebid was also discontinued, and has thus far stayed dead. The Camaro has come back, but it shares not a single bolt with the old Camaro. When they announced the death of the Camaro, nobody was also announcing a new design to start selling within the decade. It was dead and gone as far as GM was concerned. The New Beetle isn't, since they've already announced its redesigned replacement.
Rumors have at least one version going to a rear-engine, rear-drive platform, as with the original Beetle. No sources have it going back to an air-cooled flat-4 engine, though. :)
When Honda killed the CRX, they didn't replace it with anything. It just stayed dead. Now they're selling a hybrid called a "CR-Z", but they aren't fooling anyone. I vaguely resembles what a CRX might look like two decades on, but it isn't a CRX. If they'd called it a CRX, it would indeed be one.
This may seem like quibbling, but I'm a car guy, and when someone says "discontinued" instead of "redesigned", it rankles, because it sends the wrong message. You generally discontinue a car because its sales are shit and everybody hates it. The New Beetle, while being outdated by the better part of a decade now, still finds over 50,000 buyers a year in the U.S.; that's about half the number of people who bought ANY new Buicks in the same time frame. So it's selling as well as one of the brands GM decided NOT to kill...
You redesign a car to reinvigorate it. Sometimes it breathes new life into the model, sometimes it flops (see the '92 Taurus for an example of the latter). Pontiac never redesigned the Aztek, thankfully; they put that one out of our misery, but not before thousands of them had blighted the automotive landscape! ;)
By the way, Iove your avatar! I used that one for a bit, until I found my Bill the Cat version.

Um... you don't want one.....unless you want to take one apart, dip it in an acid bath, then go on the internet and get a chassie and parts that still come in the box, then find one with all the metric parts to put it together. Good luck with that. Classic cars care a bitch to rebuild, ya better have the money and a web site to work with. Good Luck!!
