Mal's gun is part of the "Hollywood Guns" exhibit at the National Firearms Museum, along with the Browning 1917A machine gun from 'The Wild Bunch', a Gyrojet pistol used in a Matt Helm movie, and guns from 'Pulp Fiction', 'No Country For Old Men', 'The Hurt Locker", etc.

Well, that depends on whether you mean the real movie prop with a revolver buried inside,
or as a fictional explanation for the future antique Mal pistol.

In my mind, the Mal pistol is a six-shot weapon with a semi-automatic, locking, operating system contained in the weapon. So, it's similar to the Broomhadle Mauser pistol, except the bolt doesn't recoil past the frame of the weapon. It must use consumable case ammunition because, while it has a detachable box magazine, it doesn't have an ejection port.

I have a problem with the QMx Mal pistol sheet claiming the Mal pistol works with;
“two distinct firing systems-a Newtech Gauss/ Coilgun Carriage and
a conventional hammer-based firing system.”
ARRRRRGH!!
I’ve been asked about the workings of the Mal pistol a few times and in both the logic of the ‘verse
AND the realities of mechanical fact,
Mal’s pistol just ain’t no rail gun!
Caseless ammo is the furthest extrapolation of technology that Mal’s pistol’s place in the ‘verse allows.
A rail gun works by suspending a projectile in magnetic fields.
Conventional firing systems work by sealing a projectile in the barrel and pushing it out by expanding gases.
To put both diametrically opposed technologies in a handgun sized package
would require technology far in advance of the Alliance laser pistols
that Joss wanted to be far in advance of the Rim-world tech that Mal and his crew possess.
Why would a pistol with tech, arguably in advance of the shiny chrome Alliance laser pistols,
be made to look old-fashioned?
The Barlow’s guide one-sheet violates the fictional construct of the ‘verse and the common sense of them as knows guns.

I was gonna say there's a Taurus .38 revolver buried in that brass shell, but you guys are waaaaay ahead of me.

If you'd like, i can try to take pix of the gun with and without sideplate in place and post em.

I thought it was pretty cool.
