Why does everybody at Fox News call Palin by her first name?

Just a peep from redneckistan here:

Sarah because she's a girl, but this isn't sexism. It's just a level of familiarity contrasted with the number of people with a given name.

You can watch this in gossip media all the time. They'll choose to lose the last name and just go with "Nicole." Occasionally, they'll mean Nicole Ritchie or someone, and then it's all confusing, because we have assumptions about who they mean. Generally they can't do this with "Jenny" or "Mike."

Here, everyone had a name, and ussually not their real name. It's like Geezer's story about Bear, everyone has names like that, because when you get right down to it, everyone is Bob or John or Janet or Valerie.

But when you limit the pool, like "Women running for president" you're safe with "Sarah" or "Hillary" with no risk of confusion. You could not, however, go with "Joe." You mean Biden, or Lieberman? Al Gore, or Al Sharpton?

I suspect, also, that there are more girls names overall.

As for Obama, people only need one moniker, and Obama is pretty easy to deal with. There are no other Obamas around, except Michelle, and people were always pronouncing Barack "barrack" and they tried "Barry" but it didn't take much, and yes, the Hussein thing is about the secret muslim thing.

But take another example. On the Daily Show "Aasif" is the only Aasif, and Mandvi is more difficult. If the show were hosted in Mumbai, where Aasif is really from, then there might be a few Aasifs about, I don't know. Probably more Mandvis. But still, when it comes to John Oliver, he's John Oliver, not "John" because that would be confusing.

It's just common sense. Say you were referring to a past president, and wanted to catch it in one. Which would work best:

George
Bush
W

See?

Now "Clinton" works, but after Hillary, he is getting relegated to "Bill" except as "President Clinton." If she becomes president, he'll retroactively become just "President Bill."

I'm only anticipating one President Sarah, so I don't see a problem with it.

The fact that you're anticipating even one, and don't see a problem with it, concerns me. I'm not sure whether I should be rolling on the floor laughing, or hiding under the bed cowering. Or maybe both at the same time. ;)
