I think the thread about Mrs. O was started specifically because of this thread. A joke was made by someone on the right about someone on the left and the left wanted the same "outrage" as was shown by this joke. I have quite specifically stated that BOTH jokes were in bad taste.
I think it boils down to what has been said several times and people want to ignore. It boils down to context. Letterman himself admitted that he thought Bristol was the one at the game and he made sure she was of legal age before telling the joke. So, put in context, if Bristol was at the game . . . yeah, kinda funny. But, the context changed when it was the younger daughter. A-Rod having sex with an underage girl, consenting or not, is legally statutory rape (that's where the "rape joke" comes into play). Now, just because Bristol got "knocked-up" when underage, does not (or at least shouldn't) make a joke about Palin's other daughter having sex and getting knocked-up at the ball game funny. Letterman realized this and thus his second apology. People realized that if it were about they're underage daughter (as Letterman himself said he realized), it would make them upset, so they empathized with Palin and understood her anger.
I think both Chris and Kwicko mentioned at the beginning of the thread that the joke, when directed toward a 14 year old was in bad taste. Maybe not those exact words, but similar. They were, however, getting a kick at how mad it was making other people and they were just stirring the pot. Then others fell for it and it just degenerated from there. That's how I saw it anyway.
I move this thread be closed?

I'm sorry, was David Letterman beating one of Sarah Palin's daughters? Was one of the girls in pain or dead by the side of the road? Are you saying they're dogs?
I said I don't know what it's like to have my daughter raped. I also don't know what it's like to have my wife raped. That in no way implies that I'd stand by and watch either of those things happen. I just don't know what it FEELS LIKE to have it happen, because it never happened to me. I would like to think that if I saw someone raping a little girl (Jongs, for instance), I'd do everything in my power to stop them. But a joke about one girl being pregnant does not constitute the rape of another, any more than telling someone they're fired is equal to actually setting them on fire.

I'm personally having a hard time trying to follow your ever changing arguments. It's almost like you feel the need to just type anything so long as you can get the last word in. I've witnessed this malaise before on this very site. I've dubbed it Citizenism.

I can recognize when a crime's being committed, even though I'm not the one committing it. That I can feel for a person doesn't mean I can know HOW THAT PERSON FEELS. You asked me to put myself in Palin's shoes, and I just never can, period. I don't have children, I don't have young daughters - knocked up or not - and I'm not a woman, so I *CAN'T* know how she feels. I don't know how much more plainly I can put it, since you obviously are making every endeavor to NOT understand the point.
