That's something else I don't understand. Democrat or Republican, if you say you love your country, and by extension your flag as a SYMBOL of your country...

Hmph - for Letterman, that's practically down on one knee with head bowed. I'm...pleased, I guess, that he did it. I'm a Letterman fan with no particular love (a little lust maybe, but no real love) for Palin, but it was a poor, tasteless joke, and if I were Letterman I'd be kicking myself for letting it air, if for no other reason than the lack of professionalism and foresight..which, as we all know, are generally the very watchwords of a typical Letterman monologue.

If the Palin clan is good for anything (and I'm sure they are), it will hopefully be in supplying to their children the moral support it takes to weather the fallout from tasteless late-night comedian jokes.

I asked that because Ginobiffaroni posted a picture where someone had photoshopped Sarah Palin's head onto a some woman toting a gun and wearing a stars and stripes bikini.

But even though that wasn't really Sarah Palin, why would the woman be wearing a bikini like that? I've always thought that sort of thing was kind of disrespectful to the flag. I'm fine with people making a message with a country's flag, and I even think people have the right to burn a flag in protest. But symbolic protest is not the purpose of a stars and stripes bikini, I think, even though I consider it a desecration of a flag in the same manner as burning a flag. I suppose it just confuses me more than it really bothers me.

But seriously - my honest, not-overly-examined feeling is that an individual's relationship to their flag should be treated about the same as their relationship to their god or higher power (if they have one): Nobody else's damn business.

My wife made an interesting point,

Palin and those like her stand up all the time critical how people run there family's and their own moral outlook:

with that being the case maybe it is fair that their family's get some of the treatment they do ( Lettermans joke not withstanding )

I mean they try to come into our homes to tell us how to live, is it not fair to examine and even be critical of the decisions and choices that person made ?

WASHnWear: Okay, that seems fair. And it's a good point about that printed fabric was cut, not an actual flag.

Ginobiffaroni: Unfortunately, Letterman's joke never made it to that higher message, focusing on Bristol's mistake and not the social ailments, mindsets, and policies that set her up to make that mistake.

Letterman taking the low road? Noooo, really?

But I agree that Sarah Palin's stance on abstinence only education has likely played some role in Bristol's pregnancy, and that is the discussion that REALLY needs to be had.

Granted, it's not likely that Bristol and her boyfriend had never heard about condoms or birth control outside of sex ed (but then again, who knows?). But probably at least as big a problem in teen pregnancy is the belief that using birthcontrol makes the act less satisfying, and romantic notions that a couple "connects" better on a physical and emotional level without it. That's more in line with the reasons I heard from my friends in highschool. None of them got pregnant thankfully, but I can see how those perceptions could lead to a lot of teen pregnancy.
