For purely visual, design and musical reasons, TMP is the only Trek film I own on DVD.

As a fan of submarine warfare, though, TWOK was the best space battle action in Trek since "Balance of Terror"!

The fanon idea is that the Voyager probe fell into something (black holes don't work like that, probably a wormhole, transwarp corridor, or other anomaly), and encountered the "machine world" in the Delta Quadrant. Then V'ger trekked its way back in search of its original creators.

If you imagine TMP to be the origin of the Borg as we know them (with Illia as the template for the Queen), it becomes much more epic.

It also makes for an ironic parallel between the space probe Voyager and the starship Voyager.

In '02, for the 20th anny of WOK, the Trek 'zine Communicator did an article in which the director, Nicholas Meyer, talked about the daunting prospect of directing Montalban. Apparently, when shooting first began for Khan's scenes, Montalban was starting out already kind of grand and over the top in his delivery, leaving himself no room to ramp it up when the tension really got heavy. So Meyer sacced up and took Montalban aside for a little word. As I recall from the article, Meyer didn't get very far into his piece when Montalban fixed him with a Khan-esque gaze and a rakish smile and said, "Ah - you are attempting to direct me!", at which point Meyer said to himself, "Oh, shit - here it comes!" But what followed was basically some touching stuff from Montalban about how he needed direction, and appreciated Meyers efforts. I Googled around a bit for the article or an excerpt, but no luck. It was kinda sweet in a way.

As for that chest...when WOK first came out my friends and I debated at some length about whether that was Montalban's real chest, or some prosthetic piece. I agree that in a way it seems like a bit much, but then the guy is leader of a race of superpersons, and we all know they tend to be a little on the chesty side. But really, if I were Montalban's age at the time (or my age at this time, for that matter) and had the goods...well, I might not care to hide my light under a bushel, either. And nuance...well, I reckon I judge his performance to be a little more nuanced than Asarian-san does. But my consideration there is, look at this guy's life since he first met Kirk and Co. - how nuanced do you think you'd be after all that? "THIS is Ceti Alpha V!"...pretty nuanced uner the circumstances, IMO. Sh*t, I'd be lucky to still be forming complete sentences!

Khan's B-actor entourage? Hmmm, yeah - good point. But what really got me about his posse was the headbands many of them wore. It was like some kind of Mad Max / Xanadu smash-up or something.

Olivia Newton John on steroids (I've always had a thing for the warrior woman with the oversized shoulderpads in MM2: The Road Warrior).

I did a little digging and here's what I got:
The actress' name is Virginia Hey, she was 29 and gorgeous when they filmed TRW. Her character's name:
Warrior Woman (makes sense). Most recently she's had a recurring role in Farscape 1999-2002.

What worked in Road Warrior, did not work in TWOK.

I'm just sayin'

(You know, with all the remakes, I'm surprised some genius hasn't come up with the brilliant idea to remake Mad Max. Peter Jackson could direct).

Peter Jackson would never have occurred to me for that, but I like it! Aside from the obvious, that would practically assure that Zac Effron wouldn't somehow get cast as the titular hero.

Somehow Zac didn't exactly jump to mind when I thought of Mad Max, too much of a pretty boy.
Although Mel was considered quite the catch back in the day.
I can see the similarities but I'm thinking a young unknown for the part of Max. Of course you would have to surround him with great villains - Christopher Walken, Danny De Vito, Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter or Cloris Leachman.
