It's incredibly well made, but in retrospect, I HATE the whole David Marcus thing. They gave Kirk his very own little redshirt to say bye to in the next flick.
I just hate that pull-a-relative-out-of-a-hat trick. Then Spock had a bro. Maybe that s**t slides in a Indian Jones movie, but Trek?

That's why I like 1, 4 & 6 better- little or no "Kirk's son" thing.

Who's with me on this? I'm curious.

I certainly don't worship it but do consider it to be an essential work of the canon nonetheless.

I agree with you about the David Marcus son thing. It wasn't needed, plus I'm sure that he wasn't the only illegitimate kid Kirk has running around the Galaxy.

To your point about Kirk not knowing, He did actually and they mention. Dr. Marcus (Carol) wanted him to stay away so he wouldn't part of Kirk's world, remember? So Kirk knew but was respecting her wishes.

My favorite solely Original Cast film is probably 6 but 4 is probably the most well done and entertaining. I want to like 1, but keep following asleep in it, although the director's cut is better.

In terms of WOK, Ricardo Montalban is pretty awesome, but I did always have a soft spot for Fantasy Island so maybe I'm bias.

***SPOILER*** (If you're the one person on earth, claiming to be a sci fi fan who hasn't seen this film don't read the following) You can't beat Spock's death scene and funeral. That's dramatic gold for Sci Fi.

I thought 2 out of all the films best portrayed the mature, close friendship Kirk and Spock had developed over the years. It was at its peak. In 4 they are working on getting back to where it was and the next films play on it but not as strongly. This is ironic because that is basically the premise of 5 but it is overshadowed by the generally awful nature of the story/plot. I apologize to anyone who really likes 5.

So, long story short I agree that it has become this iconic film to Trekkers and to question it as the best is often met with ostracism. I also think it's a pretty good Trek and is at least # 2 or 3.

Funny side note - I was watching TNG Season 1 the other day episode titled "Symbiosis" and noticed that the actors who played David Marcus and Khan's boot licker boy, second-in-command were both in that episode.

1 is my fave (my 10 year old Son's as well) because it was epic & beautiful. 4 & 6 tie for my 2nd because of pure chemistry. Then 2 & 3 because they are excellently produced & directed. My Son thinks 5 is funny, but has a bad story; I just never want to see it again.

But is it the best IYO?

My idea of THE BEST TREK is Doomsday Machine or City On The Edge Of Forever. As much as I love TMP, I just don't feel any of the movies lived up to those two episodes.

I'm not sure I count; I'm more of a 24th Century fan. Kirk & crew are historical footnotes.

That said, I do appreciate WOK as a beautifully-made movie with a perfectly-written script, though I agree that it tried to build its own backstory (what with Carol and David never having appeared anywhere else).

And I do have a weakness for TFF, if only for how much has spun off from it. (Ask Q about it the next time you see him.)

WOK was a good story but suffered from both Shatner and Montalban chewing the scenery.

My favorite of the original cast films is 6, followed by 1, 2 and 4. I could live with never seeing 3 or 5 again.
