I don't know ANYONE on this board who worships Obama blindly, Rue included. There was nose-holding that went with the vote. And if McCain had been a real option (and Palin just not been so utterly, frighteningly ignorant) the repubs would have done better in the election. The dems were elected only because the repubs sank unacceptably low. The Obama voters here are not blind supporters. If you had been paying any sort of attention at all, you'd know that.

Merit or not, I try to post respectfully. Everyone is ignorant of something. Everyone has an agenda. Everyone has a blind spot or two, including me. I post the way I hope others would post to me. I have a simple solution which I've proposed several times, and I'm gonna re-propose it.

Where rational discussion doesn't work... IGNORE THE OTHER POSTER. People come to the board for all kinds of reasons, not just to converse. Some peeps, like Whozit, simply come to stir things up.They LOVE to poke the ant-hill and watch the flurry. Some - like rappy - come for their fix. Some people come to proselytize. Nothing stop bad behavior like LACK OF REWARD. If you simply do not provide peeps the response they're looking for they will either learn to interact differently or they will go away. Meanwhile, the discussion hasn't been derailed fruitlessly into ad hominem.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. Tit for tat doesn't work if the person you're dealing with can't see the mote in his own eye... he just winds up feeling "picked on" and victimized.

So... can we all agree that most of us have to be grownups, and hold ourselves to a HIGHER standard than the one we're responding to?

BTW- I expect this message to ring with the lefty/ centrists here, not with the neorecons. You don't have to become a terrorist to fight terrorism. Maybe it's time to put that idea into practice.

Believe me, I rather enjoy seeing the full political spectrum represented here in all it's unholy glory - cause most other sites, as I pointed out, if you aren't part of the collective, you WILL be silenced, and that's not conducive to real discussion and never has been.

Hell, we even have some of the more radical fringe here and there, PN, Whozit - and sad that it is to say, there *IS* a component of the conservative/right that thinks and acts like Rappy, and all too many of em were recently in positions of power, ugh.

As for Whozits whining, no one wanted him banned, he got his hand slapped for spamrolling eight to ten one word or otherwise gibberish posts a day while not participating in the discussions, and even so I reccommended against banning him despite being the one that asked Haken to apply the ruler to his knuckles in the first place, something he's been petulant about ever since.

I tend to discuss things in the manner they're presented to me, and yes, I agree that Anthony, and HKCav are some folk to hold up as good examples, but I myself tend to shoot more from the hip with a side order of cynicism and snark - but I *will* discuss, unless I run short of time to and then will tell you so - heck, I've had rational discussions with PN a time or two cause for some of his "issues" I know more than he does, but that's a long story best told another time.

One thing I try earnestly not to do is let the actions of one poster overflow onto another, unless the second is in direct support of the first including the conduct that's set my ire, and the other is if at all possible not carrying a grudge from one thread to another - which might look a little strange when you see me chewing someones ass mercilessly in one thread but being civil in another, but that's the only way to do if you want to *continue* discussing something with folk cause otherwise it turns into one long grudge match.

I also tend to bow out when a discussion devolves into a tit-for-tat he-said-she-said ping pong spat most folk left behind in preschool cause it adds nothing to the discussion and just watchin it leaves me annoyed at both participants.

And lastly, while I have a large range of specialties and knowledge bases, if something is way out of my area of competence I'll make sure that's clear and limit comment - likewise if I have an agenda, personal stake or simply no intention to be reasonable about something, I WILL warn you first...

All that said, sometimes a civil discussion can actually be less informative, less of a learning experience, because people do not reveal the emotional or personal issues that best express WHY they feel this way, or caused them to gravitate to that opinion - something that carries in text only if actively expressed, and is one reason I make effort TO express it - knowing WHY someone holds an opinion is often as important as knowing what it is.

Just my thoughts on the matter,

It's the same thing without all the weapons and goose-stepping.

To be perfectly honest, it was a guess on my part. You said something about a chrome skullcap, and I took a shot in the dark. I figured there probably aren't TOO many chrome skullcaps in obscure movie-dom, so it seemed like about a 50/50 chance.

Haven't seen that movie in eons. Loved it when I was younger, though.

In an effort to jack up the intimidation, the cop squads were marching in almost goose-stepping fashion, smacking their riot clubs against their shin-guards to create a sinister sound with echoes back to Munich. This was the most violent of the street battles that I witnessed, involving hundreds of police and more than 20 tear gas attacks.

Oh, and lets not, better, lets NEVER, EVER forget what happened to the FLDS, despite the fact that they're a little wacko, having their kids dragged off and brutalised by the state because they "might, someday" raise them to be something other than obedient consumers.

You'll also note that the whole issue has all but disappeared, leaving over four HUNDRED severely traumatised children with not a single whit of post trauma counselling, therapy or anything of the kind, despite quite a few of them showing obvious signs of PTSD, which is damn heartbreaking to see a child suffering from.

Hell, some of you watched it go down in a rather epic confrontation on this very board, right up to the State's sudden capitulation just before the DNA results would have had to been released publicly - something which tells you all you need to know about that.

I got into that, at the end, personally and at point blank range, seeing those traumatised kids cling to someone they SHOULD have been afraid of cause they feared the State and it's agents MORE, will forever and ever leave a foul taste in my mouth.

Who on earth ever said I was a liberal? Also too many people abuse their freedom of speech on the left AND right. My view of Auraptor is what it is, and I am in no way denying him his lame freedom of speech, but I really wish he and people like Rush Limbaugh would shut the fuck up because all they are doing is causing trouble, and not in any way solving any problems. If they had any, reasonable, viable, and workable ideas that would enhance this country, and how it runs I'm totally all ears, and willing to work with them like any reasonable person, but so far, all of these years I've heard nothing but hate, and divisiveness from them. Now, since you asked specifically for my reply, I'll oblige. NO, I don't agree with River6213; I've said as much repeatedly. As Frem has repeatedly pointed out, a right is only universal if it's shared by EVERYBODY, even those who say things you really wish they wouldn't.
