That seems much less 'identifying with' and much more 'lusting after' to me. Not that there's anything wrong with that, per se, but it's not really the current topic.

Mal, definitely - I've always felt he was a character I connected with on an unusually deep level from any sort of lore. Not because I'm cool and dashing, but because I'm a cynic on the exterior but a softy at heart. Also, I'm someone who is independently oriented and likes my space (pun intended) and am very particular about what friends I let get close to me and consider "family," but am fiercely loyal to and protective of those I care about. The individualistic, freedom-loving pioneer spirit he embodies really resonates with me as well, as I'm sure it does with most browncoats.

The one I say I identify the most with is Simon. I don't have a younger sibling(I'm the youngest),But if I did, and they were put in danger,I would be out for blood. Plus I'm in the medical field, also.

I'd really like to say Jayne. He's uncomplicated, dismayingly (to himself) loyal, free-spirited, and pretty easygoing, so long as there are girls, guns, and excitement.
However, it is River that I really identify with. Oh not any of the physical attributes (I'm a boy, size large, with the gymnastic ability of a carrot), but rather in the overall outlook. Despite my advanced years, I take childlike wonder in the 'verse that surrounds me every day. I worry, not for myself but for others around me that may be affected by me. I feel part of a family, but also stand alone, facing an unknown future that both excites and scares me.
Also, I can probably kill you with my brain. I'm fairly confident of this, but I haven't found anyone worth trying it out on. Yet.

Hum... Kaylee. Most of the time, she's having fun, absorbing the world, and being all bright and smily- but there are times when she feels horribly inadequate, or unsure of herself, or wishing she was stronger so she could protect those she loves. She also has 'liberal' views on sex (i.e., it's something to have fun with, pure and simple), but doesn't like drama (like having to try and get Simon to realize that she likes him without outright telling him because he might reject her)...

Tough call...I could see a bit of me in Jayne,Book AND Mal.
I'm am ex-Grunt,family had ties to Benedcitine Monastic community,had somewhat of a checkered/gray area past with a few bad habits( thank God for 'em all! They make things interesting)...just pick the worst traits of all three,and ...well ;based on my mean streak;Niska-now THERE was a guy who could hold a grudge(only kidding!)

The more I think on it (and the more I re-watch Buffy) the more I have to say Willow is the Jossverse character I relate to the most. No only Jossverse, actually. I relate to Willow more than I think I relate to any other character ever. She was awkward and geeky in her high school days, much like me. She vastly prefers the pursuit of actual learning in college to the vapid atmosphere of high school, much like me. She likes computers and magic, much like me. She's been attracted to and fallen in love with both men and women, much like me. Losing those loves devastated her beyond expression, which I suppose is much like most people, but something I certainly felt in my guts when I was watching it, in a way I didn't feel with any other characters on any show. Her expressions of pain, from the tiniest tear to the most violent explosion of rage, speak to my own pain, past and present. And when she loses it, she really loses it, and fears she'll never be able to relate to people again. Love is the only thing that brings her back from all the brinks and even literal chasms of her life, another thing I feel in my bones. Oh, and plus, I'm not convinced she's a natural redhead, but that's okay, I think it works well on both of us

Jayne in a lot of ways. I HAVE been in a position to say, "Sure would be nice if we had a few ____!" after being ordered not to bring things.

I try not to be that deliberately obnoxious, but I understand the use of it.

I've done a lot of Kaylee--duct tape and spit on beat up equipment that has to be fixed NOW.
