Who do you identify with (and why)?

Which character in the verse? firefly and/or serenity.
I don't mean "who do you laugh at", or "who do you admire" or "who would you find yourself attracted to for love, lust or friendship". This is not a "what character are you" quiz.
I mean deep-down, gut-level, what character do you most relate to, who do you UNDERSTAND, "connect with" and why? You may have to look in unconventional places.
This can be anybody on the show, though main crew probably has the most thorough examples.

Jayne and Simon. Jayne for his brash no nonsense attitude, Simon for his detached analytical viewpoint. I guess together they fail to communicate or play well with others.
Second, I also identify with River because she's crazy, and Kaylee for being also no nonsense, and often the unappreciated workhorse of the machine, a decent viewpoint char. I don't relate very well to the other characters, even if I like them, or get where they're coming from.
I'm slightly disturbed by the fact that the only person on Heroes I actually like is Sylar, now that they've iced Tracy [sic(k)] and Daphne. I intensely dislike the petrellis.
I relate to Xander and Giles. I don't really relate to anyone on Angel, but I sympathize with Wes and Lorne.
I can't relate to anyone on dollhouse.

I don't know that there's one particular character in full that I identify with. There are parts of most of them them that I identify with.
Actually, strike that. I prolly most identify with Zoe. She's direct and does what needs to be done. She "gets" the emotional side of things, you know? She chooses her battles and the ones she picks, she does well. (Actually, that's more something I strive for, rather than do well.)

Mal mainly. My favourite character in the entire world of fiction.
Also a little bit River, as being always a little bit detached from other humans.

I mostly relate to Shepard Book, in that I usually am an observer of the things going on around me and I have a deep faith in God even though I am not a church goer. I also have a storied past. I only wish I had that much hair.

Inara.
It really jumped out at me from the start, and it's a mix of things, but mainly her way of interacting with the world. A very peaceful and loving, but at the same time detached position within a group. She focuses on herself as an individual first, then on her ties to other people, and she feels both the upsides and downsides of it.
The show examines this choice of hers without judging it, which I really appreciated.
That, and her sense of morality. The preference of logic and debate to judgment or coercion. She never stops questioning and doesn't lower her standards, but she does respect other people's point of view and her own limitations.
I really just had an instant sense of personal understanding of her character based on these things.

I'd say Wash. I tend to be a smart ass and try to diffuse tense situations with humor. Also, Wash is loyal to his 'crew' and cares/worries about them very much (as in the scene -forget which episode- where Simon tells him not to worry about him and he says that he's already worrying about Zoe so it's not that far for him to go to worry about Simon). ...... but mostly because of the using humor to lighten the mood thing!!!

I'd have to go with Wash and Zoe. Mainly because their marriage is similar to mine (sans the special forces training).
Years ago when my wife and I walked down the street we could literally stop traffic. Enter a restaurant and a hush would fall over the room. It was as if we were green. All of a sudden in 2002 we're on TV.
