New Trek early reports.

Mac you hit the nail right on the head! I saw Star Trek last night and found it to be funny, engaging and worth the money to see it on the big screen. As a child my brother and I used to watch the original Star Trek re-runs and I remember seeing Star Trek--The Voyage Home in the movie theatres with my father. I felt that Chris Pine did a very good job at portraying a young James T Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, at least for me, was very believable... ah, hell.. I really liked it and I think they all did a great job, no reason for me to repeat what Mac alreayd said. :) I am excited about this new take on classic Star Trek and will definitely watch the next one when it comes out.

Macbaker, there is only one (very minor) point upon which I disagree: Sarek. True, Lenard's shoes are size 39,475, but his character was defined largely by his concern for Spock's career and future. I thought Ben Cross pulled it off quite well. Other than that - you're dead on the money! The original series run was a shade before my time, but I was raised on the reruns. I, too, am not that crazy about the new Enterprise or Chekov's accent (Yelchin was born in Russia - that's not his natural accent, is it?), but the treatise of almost every character was eeeeeexcellent - especially McCoy and Uhura! At last, 'The Search for Spock' is no longer the only odd-numbered Trek movie that doesn't suck.

Happy to oblige. I quite agree! If you haven't yet seen the remastered DVD version, it's mind-boggling. The original rendition of the planet-killer was a lot scarier, but the new outer-space scenes are eye-popping IMO. Of course, the best part of the episode will never change: William Windom's performance.

We caught the Thursday preview. No trailers were attached.
The movie was fun and enjoyable. The story includes an explanation for the change in history. While it's an old and tired reason, I think it mostly works. Kirk and Spock were fine. I wouldn't' say they were the people I thought of after the leaving the theater or the people I smiled about while watching. Bones, Chekov, and Scotty stood out for me. Sulu was a hoot, but I love George so much it's hard not to feel a little upset that it wasn't him up there (watch for Sulu's sword).
The big bad was eh. I did not like Bana. At all. Could have been the story could have been the direction. The big bad device made me laugh out loud. I was the only person in the theater that appeared to react this way. If you don't want to spoil the build up don't read my full review on my site or you might laugh too.
Spock has a girlfriend. Uhura blows off Kirk, repeatedly. Winona disappears into her role well enough that you don't really notice her. Go see it.
I'm a big Trek lover and thought it was just fine.

I've got a feeling that this movie might be the thing that jump-starts the economy. :)
I'm only half joking about that. Everybody I know wants to see it in the theatre - and I don't know any Trekkies! From our college intern (she's 22, hot, and totally not into sci-fi), to the business owner (she's 33 and also NOT into sci-fi), to our accountant (he's 59; I turned him on to Firefly and Serenity, and he loved them), to my wife and all my friends, EVERYONE wants to see this.
I heard part of a review of it on NPR, of all places. The reviewer said it was giddy fun, and loved it. NPR!
I'm really jazzed about this Trek offering.
