New Trek early reports.

Saw the new Trek movie. Liked it. Cleverly done. Though, I did have some issues.

Spock's romantic interest w/ Uhura, simply annoys. I don't HATE it, but I fail to see the point. Sure,i it's a neat, "didn't see that coming" twist, but I have to ask...why?
I really love the casting though, of the younger versions of all the characters, save one. Checkov. Where all the other crew were either brilliant or darn good, I think the casting for Pavel Chekov missed, entirely. How'd they drop the ball so completely here ? Odd.
The sets - Horrific. Steele girders and large boiler tanks on board a star ship ? WTF ? And the WIllie Wonka style water tube, which Scotty gets transported into, wtf purpose does THAT serve ? I'm not die hard Trekker, but just dayum! Anyone who saw Galaxy Quest, and remembers the smashy-slicey-flame thrower maze leading to the Omega 13, knows what I mean.
Over all, I liked the flick, but the above items really took away from a great story.

In the original series there was that controversial (for the time) scene where Kirk kisses Uhura, in the script it was going to be Spock, but the Shatman insisted that it should be Kirk. Maybe it was a reference to this? I was spotting lots of little references here and there.

Are you accusing Shatner of being a scene stealing showboater ?
If that was indeed some sort of homage paid to the original script, then so be it. But this was no mere kiss, forced on the characters via mind control, by a 3rd party. There was a true relationship implied here.

There was also a bit of flirtation between Spock and Uhura in the series' 2nd episode, Charlie X.

Well I thought Scotty and his....um ... raisinette?? little friend were darling.
Also I though the altered timeline made for a nice way to shift both focus and plot to adjust for differences. Shall be interested to see where they take this.
Didn't overmuch approve of their failure to salute Roddenberry or at the very least mention the passing of his wife ( also the ships voice, Nurse Chapel, and Lwaxanna Troy)in some way a bit inappropriate, but a fairly good film.
Not sure about Spock /Uhura...

They did indeed have a "In Memory of" at the very end of the credits for Gene and Majel.

Regarding Spock/Uhura, couple thoughts.
The Kirk-as-Captain paradigm had not yet been corrected in this timeline, so Spock was filling in the Captainy role, Kirk out of the picture. Also Kirk was out of the picture during Uhura's early Academy time, so she needed some action with plausible deniability - she's not to be frigid or neuter. Spock allows her to rebuff Kirk.
All the relationships are mangled with this altered line, but they still all need to end up in the same group, even with Kirk missing from the equation after his dad's death. So having the interconnecting relationships different makes sense until Kirk-as-Captain comes to fruition.
Forgot my other thoughts.
I had read somewhere that future Spock should have gone straight from the Cave to the installation Scotty was at, which would have allowed Kirk to die in the Cave, but that was also answered in the story.
