Oh Finn, there you go again, telling peeps what's what. This has ever been your way, though, tellin' peeps that you disagree with who and what they are (just to be fair, you're not the only one here that does that, but you seem to believe that you don't...).
Sigy nailed it, I believe : "You go off track because you have deep contradictions within your own thinking that you can't acknowldge (btw, you spelled that wrong, Sig)."
You seem to believe that your way of processing info is better than those that disagree with you, or that you have more info to process, or whatever, but you are just another brighter than average mind on this board. And when faced with a logical and righteous criticism of your arguments, you deflect, and it seems that you don't even know that you do it.
Anyway, don't take this all so seriously, Finn.

"You have it all figured out." See, that's not the case, with ANYONE here. We ask questions to get answers (most of us ), when we get bs we call it. We're all full of it sometimes. We need to be told is all.

BTW- IMHO Kwicko is not a troll. He's basically reflecting the same logic back to various posters. It SHOULD cause a moment of self-reflection, but... that seems to be beyond comprehension for some.

Kick in the pants? For what?

Hey- here's one, my great friend & I had a discussion about eating meat a long time ago. I was like, me asking if he cared about animals, if they had souls, if he'd eat his cat- that sort of thing. He came back with "I just like eating meat."
Simple, truthful, direct. His like of eating meat was his overriding consideration on the subject.
If only most peeps could be that truthful, eh?

I got a question for you (and by extension AU, Rue, Finn, Kwicko, Jong, etc.)-
Do you have any beliefs that you can honestly say make no objective sense, you believe it "just because"?
Like, I believe in a shadow government...I have no hard evidence, and if pressed I'd say I believe it "just because."

I just wish peeps could say the same for their baseless beliefs, so that we wouldn't have all this tiring circular reasoning & strawman crap all the time.

I believe that the universe is real, that we are a part of it, and that we come to know it through our senses. Just because. I have no real PROOF of that, you see. (Subjective idealists like George Berkeley could make a convincing argument otherwise, from a different set of assumptions.)

I believe in the greatest good for the greatest number, even generations of the future.

I believe that you are defined by what you DO, not what you've convinced yourself about your motives.

I believe that we are all subject to our assumptions, and that the more fundamental the assumptions the harder they are to see. I also believe that the highest calling of the human mind is to know itself in order to free itself from bias, to see the world more clearly and to understand it better.

So continually using the wrong word, even when it's been repeatedly pointed out to you as being the wrong word, says NOTHING about your being smart or dumb? Like when you wrote this:

Quote:

But that would seem to argue my point. What do you know about Auraptor that would lead you to feel so strongly and personally against him, other then his political views? You genuinely dislike a person for no other reason then that this person’s political beliefs differ from yours. What you are describing is ideological bigotry or fundamentalism.

Twice in that same post, you misused the word "then" instead of using the correct word, "than". This indicates pretty clearly that you're either dumb, or you're just being an asshole and refusing to use the correct word in a fit of spitefulness.

Mike

Well, now - that mystery now solved. Asshole and insufferable prick it is.

Exactly my point. In your mind, you have us all figured out. We don’t share your point of view, so we are delusional nutcases. This is your excuse for not listening. This is why you insist upon asking the same question over and over again. You expect to hear the answer you want to hear, and if we don’t give you that answer, it’s not because we have a different point of view – it’s because we are scary and delusional crazy people. You can’t see my reasoning on the issue of human life because you insist upon apply an unrealistically childish model of reality, one in which no difficult choices are ever made. And you do that, because as long as you can confine my point of view in your mind to some simplest model it was never intended for, then you can right me off as scary delusional monster who wants to see people murdered. You have it all figured out.

I'm sure we all provide this information to the wackos in the sincere hope they will some day open their eyes and no longer be liberals loons. However there comes a point at which despair looms wide and threatens that these units are too far gone and may be beyond salvage, they may never open their eyes. But being the parties of hope and reason, we persevere in our attempts to bringht light to the lefty masses.

And Finn, let me be clear: I hope you continue with your posts as is. If your typo concentration becomes too confusing, if I become bewildered about your actual meaning, I will point out the passage of confusion and ask for clarification. Otherwise the confusions can rest with the dolts, and I'll enjoy your dialogue.

I’m not that concerned with typos. They have never interfered with the meaning of my posts, and no one but Kwicko at this point has ever complained about them. And the only reason kwicko is complaining is to ignore the message of my posts. And that’s really what I was illustrating. It’s not typos or misspellings that concern kwicko, if it were, then he would have mentioned Storymark’s misspellings, which he did not. Instead, his intent was finding some way of confusing and ignoring the message of my post, a tactic that people Syngym encourage. This is behavior that has always existed on this board, but recently it seems to have become much worse. We are witnessing the death of fff.net, I imagine. It’s sad, but this is the way it happens. As the community starts to loose connection with itself, the trolls become more prominent and the hate becomes more aggressive. I watched it happen on the Dark Angel Board.

JSF, pull your head out of your ass. "Non-vicious" was indeed misspelled; Jongs had it spelled "non-viscious". If you think that's a lie, then you're as stupid as that insufferable prick Finn.

Yes, instead responding to "the message" of my post (that you really need to work on your communication skills), your intent was to find some way of confusing and ignoring that message by instead attacking ME, calling me insufferable, an asshole, and a prick.

And I've noticed in other recent posts of yours that you STILL won't correctly use the word "then". "Then" is indicative of time: You are being an asshole, and THEN JSF joined you in "assholery". The word you should be using when making a comparison is "than", as in "You are a bigger asshole THAN JSF is."

I've pointed it out to you more than a few times, but you still refuse to correct yourself, instead resorting to calling me names. It's not a typo, unless you make the same "typo" every single time you use the word in this fashion. Is it that offensive to you, the idea that you could be wrong and I could be right? Or is it just your pigheaded arrogance that refuses to allow you to EVER admit your mistakes?

I think, if that has anything to do with it, it has more likely emboldened the Liberal camp to be more aggressive in their attacks. Certainly it is not the "right-leaning" peeps that are "calling out" Auraptor. But I suspect it just has to do with the loss of community, because I don’t feel any love from my fellow browncoats.

JewelStaiteFan, Keep up the great work here! And DON'T EVER seriously engage them. Just mock and insult them as they justly deserve. You owe them nothing, no explanations, no debate. The more you and others stand up to them, the more they go nuts. Look above for the most sad and pathetic example of this...Rue, the High Priestess of Landru Lawgivers, spending hours and hours cutting & pasting or re-typing my post quotes, cherry-picking phrases, and desperately wanting an explanation. All that time spent was time taken away from her usual biased bullshit postings of the day. Funny how she and her RWED flock of feckless followers never ask for explanantions from their own agents of mayhem.

I did. Serenity was still new. Only a year old. Hell, there were parts of the country that were still playing it in theaters that year. There was lots of enthusiasm to offset the snarkiness, but that’s not the case anymore. It's true that the Bush bashing and political hatreds existed even then, but today it has become harder to overlook. As the enthusiasm for Firefly wanes it is replaced with snark and trolling to become more intense.

How else do you explain invading and occupying Iraq, to the tune of what will end up costing us TRILLIONS of tax dollars, and for what? Because apparently THEIR freedom is far more important than OUR freedom - and remember, they hate us for our freedom!

So yeah, if they supported a tyrant (or even if WE supported that same tyrant, but now we're not so sure about him), or used to have WMD, or if they said something we don't like, or if they're some shade less than pasty white, we'll "spread democracy" to them with bombs and guns, right?

The hypocrisy is probably part of the problem. When Bush was in office, the world was always falling a part, the economy was always bad, the Iraq war was always an issue. Then Obama was elected and suddenly the economy is not much of an issue anymore (despite being in a recession), the Iraq war is almost never mentioned, and the world is at peace. Nothing has changed in the last year, aside from the collapse of the economy, but the liberals have decided that none of the issues they were once so passionate about are really that important anymore. I do admit that the hypocrisy gets to me, and probably makes me less willing to take many of you seriously.

In a choice between right-wing fascism & left-wing socialism, the latter will mostly always be preferable IMO, but the real issue here is that Obama is a Centrist, and the socialistic trappings have been with us for some time now, they're nothing new. Which goes to show how woefully little you know about me, in more ways than one.

1) I work hard for a living. I mean WORK. It's a lot of physical work, much lifting, much moving stuff around with forklift and pallet truck. Yes, I drive a forklift. Yes, I wear a hardhat on occasion.

2) I work my ass off 5, 6, or 7 days a week, as the need arises.

3) I'd get a girlfriend, but that would probably upset my wife. Sunday is our 20th anniversary. Sorry you haven't found anybody yet. ;)

4) There really should be a comma between "girlfriend" and "loser" - unless you're trying to tell me to get a loser girlfriend. And I have to reiterate, I think my wife would get mad.

And honestly, Jewels, my little chickadee - when did you ever see me claim that I'm *NOT* an asshole? Huh? In fact, the truth is quite the contrary - I've said it many times here, I am absolutely an asshole. Hell, I scored 23 out of 24 on Frem's "Asshole Test" - but to be honest, I was really ]trying to be an asshole when taking that test - and it worked! I'm also a magnificent bastard, and a downright son-of-a-bitch.

I guess my only question for you is, why are YOU such an insufferable asshole?

ETA: Drats! I was trying to reply with Sig's response to Chris's question about what we believe "just because". Here's his quote:

"I believe that the universe is real, that we are a part of it, and that we come to know it through our senses.

I also believe that the highest calling of the human mind is to know itself in order to free itself from bias, to see the world more clearly and to understand it better."

Wow! Great answer! What a refreshing response. Thanks for making a serious answer to that interesting question. (I couldn't tell if anyone acknowledged your answer to the question posed about what we belief "just because", so I figured I'd chime in -- even if I don't think I agree with all of it).

Actually, the pay is terrible. Here in Austin, an English teacher with ten years' experience gets paid less than $30,000 per year.

Anyone who goes into teaching for the money is an idiot. And anyone who goes into teaching for the summers off is going to get paid like someone who works nine months out of the year.

This is in no way to be read as a defamation of teachers. It's a noble profession, a true calling for some, and it's a damned shame that we don't respect good teachers as much as we do good football players, and pay them accordingly.

Good, so instead of taking responsibility for our coercive interrogation techniques we’ll send people to countries that will do far, far worse, or we will use those techniques ourselves since there is no oversight. I’m not sure how much we will actually withdrawal from Iraq, but the best that can be said about that is that Bush’s Surge worked and Obama can’t take any responsibility for that. So now we will look the other way when Cuba commits atrocious human rights violations. And we have a president whose only claim to fame is that he has mastered a flowery, feel-good politically correct way of telling people what they want to hear. And then there’s Gitmo, which if it actually is closed will mean either releasing extremely dangerous terrorists to continue acts of terrorism or holding them in places where there will be far less accountability for their treatment.

Why is something the matter? Isn’t it possible that I had to go to work? Or I spent time with the girls? Or even staring at the wall would probably be a better use of my time then responding to your posts. There are all kinds of reasons why I wouldn't jump to respond to your posts just because you post them, not the least of which is that your opinion isn’t that important. In fact, you should be kissing my ass right now because I thought enough of you to tell you off.

Under Bush we did our own dirty work. We could regulate it; assure that methods that were more humane and more effective were used. We were moving towards a more open policy and finally moving towards legally defining what is acceptable and what is not. Under Obama, all that is lost. There will be no accountability, which means the Egyptians will do our dirty work for us or clandestine unofficial CIA teams will act with no guidance from the state. There will be no further discussion on the matter, because we’ll wash our hands and pretend we aren’t standing knee deep in mud.

My problem with that is that any technique that an administration wants to use can be certified as effective, safe & legal in that way, no matter if it is or isn't.

I don’t worship Obama like you do. I’m not naïve enough to simply say that because Obama is in office the second coming has occurred. You seem to think the whole world has changed, it has not. It’s the same one it was when Bush was in office.

Like Sarge said, I really like the facelift, but that's all I'm seeing so far. I don't worship him, but after Bush & Cheney, almost anyone would seem great.

I'm just hoping that Obama is ready for a little tussle here & there to enforce his no-torture sentiments. We'll see.

OPPYH, I have to issue a retraction, and an apology. My figures were off, and not by a just a little! Here's the latest figures (2007 were the most recent I could find):

Quote:

TEXAS RANKS 29TH IN THE NATION FOR TEACHER PAY

Texas ranked 29th in the nation for its average teacher salary in 2006-07, according to the American Federation of Teachers' (AFT) Survey and Analysis of Teacher Salary Trends 2007.

The average teacher salary in Texas for teh 2006-07 school year was $45,392. Texas was ranked 10th in the nation for beginning teacher salaries at $38,522.

Sorry about that. My bad for listening to my sister-in-law, the math teacher!

But apparently, Austin doesn't pay well for ANY teachers, since the university churns out so many of them. And because so many of them want to stay here, it tends to depress wages, while at the same time INCREASING the cost of living. In most recent comparisons I've seen, Austin's cost of living ranks almost dead even with San Francisco, Chicago, and Seattle - none of which are exactly known for being cheap places to live.

As I've said, I work in a warehouse where I can wear pretty much whatever I want, I can sing, talk to myself if I want, curse, burp, fart, or what have you, and I make more than most teachers here. And I don't have to put up with anyone's kids!

Does that seem right to you?

Oh, and sorry again about passing on bad info.
