I know many have had troubles with the 2nd Disc, but I cannot play "After Life" on the first disc.

At first I thought it might have been a scratched disc, but when I returned it and got another one, it was the same problem again. And, I tried it in 3 different DVD players, so it can't be the player.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Let me just say that this is the THIRD Buffy set I have had to return. I had problems with both seasons 3 and 4 before this one.

The problems with scratched discs is so bad, that I actually open up the DVDs when I get to my car and thoroughly check over for scratches before I leave. Many a time I've had to walk back into the store and say, "I just bought this, and found a scratch."

Of course, I get weird looks that seem to say, "You freak. Why do you open a DVD in your car?" But, it's worth not having to drive all the way back when a disc is scratched. I'd say that the problem exists mostly with Fox's "great" (sarcasm) accordion-style packaging.

I have had horrible problems with X-Files, Buffy, Angel, and 24. They need to do something about this. The failure rate is about 20%, which is unacceptable.

I have every Buffy dvd set, every Angel set, and Firefly, and have yet to have a problem with any of them. I have watched all of the first two discs of Season 6 and so far everything is fine.

My guess is that there is some sort of compatability problem with certain brands of dvd players? I have heard of people having problems with certain discs on one player, but when they try it in another brand of player it is fine. I have a Toshiba, and it always plays perfectly.

My current hypothesis is that a certain batch of discs didn't encode right, and Best Buy got the bulk of them.

I'm going to test my theory by trying to return them to Fry's (who will take back a Pentium 2 system as long as it looks new) and see what results I get.

I completely agree. Best Buy is the one that has the loose discs along with cracks in them, I always shake the box to see if any are loose and that might make people mad because it might just end up coming loose, but sorry, i care 'bout me, lol. Anyways the dvd's may be the whole problem, but some people believe its the dvd player. I have never seen so many people turn in complaints before, we need to write to FOX. Grr....

I agree, it sounds like a bunch of the discs didn't get encoded right. I haven't had a problem with anything else other than Disc 2. however.

i've been offline for a bit since my computer is very much dying, but i've been having disc 2 probs as well. i bought one copy at walmart and tried to watch omwf on my portable dvd player (initial), but the it went straight to the beginning of life serial, completely skipping the menu and stuff. i couldnt get to any other eps or the menu from there, either. it would just stop if i tried. i returned it and got another, and the same thing happened. when i got home, i tried it on our dvd player (apex) and it worked perfectly. then i tried it on my teacher's dvd player and it got stuck stuck on one of the opening screens, and i tried it on my friend's dvd player and it got stuck on an even earlier screen. sucky.

Season two wouldn't play. Fortunately, I still had my receipt... It can take weeks to watch the whole season. I hope S6 is gonna be okay, cuz I have no idea where the receipt is.
