I loved Brosnan, but his films were a different, newer Bond.

Yeah, Fleming saw the whole business as pretty grim. and wrote his Bond that way. But in the 1960s. that dark view of espionage was not very popular. The camped up movie Bond struck a chord and was hugely successful. No one dared to mess with the formula, until the recent reboot.

Happens I rented it Saturday, and watched it. I'm no fan of any of the Bond movies, but I read some of the books back in the day. Casino Royale, with Daniel Craig, was very much what Ian Fleming wrote. From the little I know of the movies, none of the other movies was much of his writing. Q of S probably fit in with most of the other movies-- lots of improbable chases, action, violence, and destruction, but with a less flip, more tough guy attitude.

I didn't care for it.

But hey, a big shout out for Tinker, Tailor, mentioned above. I saw the mini-series ( So complex it couldn't fit in anything shorter.) on PBS about 30 years ago, and on video once since. Brilliant story telling.

Okay, I watched it.
Despite having arguably the single worst opening credits song in a Bond movie, I actually enjoyed this one. I liked it MUCH better than Casino Royale. I think I was more open to it because it didn't follow a novel, and I had no preconceived notion as to what it should have been like.

Glad you liked it buddy.
Thought the intro car chase, whilst typically over the top, ended greatly when you found out what his 'luggage' was.

I could also never really see the other Bonds dealing with a bad guy like...

...the one on the balcony where he held him till he died, just casually looking around to see that he wasn't being watched.

Dark and unsettling but I felt it fitted a 'truer' Bond character.

I also like that whilst certain plots are now (seemingly) closed, they left the main plot still going for the inevitable sequel.

Gotta completely agree on the theme tune. And this is from someone who thought that the Hagdonna theme would always remain the worst. Where's the epic, showstoppingness (yes that's a word or at least it is now) of older movies? Or the catchiness of the 80's themes?

Subjectively speaking, Brosnan was my favourite Bond. But Craig does capture the anti-hero quality in Bond from the novels the best, I'm now thinkin'.

The story is not an Ian Flemming story, it was different, but I do like it.
