Slaying the dragon

I was listening to the commentary on "Grave" last night and it was revealed that the original enemy planned to fight Buffy in the finale of season 6 was the dragon that came out of the portal during the fight with Glory during "The Gift". The writers wanted to use it, but it was just too expensive, since they blew their wad on the musical.

So, in true Whedonverse fashion, they're not going to let a good thing go. The question was raised as to whether or not the dragon in the Angle finale is the same one. That remark in the commentary pretty much confirmed it. How very clever.

and here I thought Buffy slayed it in PhenDog's wonderful (still ongoing) saga "Heartfelt Gifts Series"

Excellent! An excuse to go listen to it again.

It's right at the beginning of the commentary, while Giles is putting Willow into stasis:

"We didn't know what Buffy would be doing... I originally thought, 'Wouldn't it be neat for Buffy to battle the dragon that came out of the hell dimension... in season five'... We never dealt with it. We thought, 'What ever happened to that dragon?' But of course, fighting a dragon is kind of expensive."

As for the dragon...yeah, I wish Joss and co. would have bothered to do more w/it special effects budget be damned...still I've read some great fics that take advantage of where he left off! A slightly more dragon friendly one than my own is that written by Rari Coss entitled "Dragon" which (with it's sequel) can be found on her authorpage at http://www.vampirecows.com/odd/ !
