See, making me miss Austin. Every Christmas I say I'm going to get out to the Drafthouse and every year I don't (though I did manage to go see a movie this year, it was Twilight and wasn't playing at the Drafthouse, hehe).
Speaking of movies, did anyone see Watchmen? I saw it last weekend and... Well I'll let other people reply first, heh.

Lol MsA, that's exactly it. Texas isn't high tech, but Austin is -- Austin not actually being a part of Texas, just surrounded by it. Dell is headquartered there, along with several other programming and tech companies, and there are tons of video game companies there too.

Too flustered thinking of glowing, blue penis to make a comment huh? I thought it was just OK. The story kept me interested the whole time at least, but I don't think I'd bother watching it again. Now that I know all the mysteries there's not much left that would keep me interested for nearly 3 hours (unless the director's cut has the hot chick naked a lot more cause daaaaaaaamn). Also I thought the criminals in the movie were incredibly stupid. I mean if I see 20 of my buddies get their asses handed to them without so much as laying a finger on their opponent I'm pretty much turning and running. Instead these guys seem to be waiting in line for their turn to get pummeled. Sometimes even "cutting" in line. (hehe you know the scene with the cutting) Which is why I'm glad I'm desensitized to violence. Cause there was a lot of it. Meh

Generally I don't mind nudity or violence, especially in movies like this that know their audience and play to it. 300, for instance. I thought the violence was cinematic and fun, and the nudity was beautiful and artistic and true to the story.
But Watchmen? I don't know what went right for the director with 300 and so horribly wrong with Watchmen, but I really wish they'd made it PG-13 instead and just cut out all the nudity and violence.
Part of the problem was that I found the story horrifically boring. The plot plodded along, I had no reason to care about any of the characters much less like them, and there was absolutely no sense of cinematic "wow". Just dull, the whole time. With random nudity. For three hours. In one scene I was actually so bored I found myself not listening to anything that was going on, and rather wondering if Dr. Manhatten was circumsized, and if so if that was true to the character. Seriously. No movie should ever put you through that.
I also found the sex scenes to be really uncomfortable and just gross. Again I'm going to have to watch 300 again soon just to get all that grossness out of my head. And what was up with the couch scene? What the fuck was that?? And the violence actually managed to be worse than the sex scenes. The sequence with the dog, and the sequence with the jail cell door made me want to go watch Sin City or something. But I'll probably stick with 300, heh. ;)
I was totally excited to see the movie too, and I'm just annoyed that I had to sit through three hours of gross pointlessness to get over that excitement. I actually know the guy who did the production design for the movie (worked with him a few years back), and one of the guys who did some of the "motion comics" that were up on iTunes last fall, advertising for the movie. I saw a rough cut of one of the motion comics (corresponds to the first entry from Rorschach's journal in the movie) last summer and thought it looked awesome. So I was totally jazzed to see the movie. And then it sucked royally.
On the bright side, I did like the production design, lol. It was a pretty movie, just with nothing behind it. But I tend to be a fan of that guy's work no matter what he does (he also did Minority Report, Fight Club, The Crow, Corpse Bride, a bunch others -- all very visually awesome movies IMO). And I haven't gotten to talk to my friend who did the motion comics yet to see what he thought of the movie.
My husband and I hated it so much that I warned some of my family members (who are more touchy about violence and nudity than I am) off of it. But then the hubby talked to some people at the office who really loved it, so now I'm a bit cautious about saying I hated it as much as I did, heh.

I think the couch scene was intentionally awkward. I'm almost thinking the guy was supposed to be virgin and we're getting that he had no idea what to do now that he got what he wanted.
I did sort of care about the characters. I cared more about how they got where they were at in the movie. One point I couldn't really figure out was whether they had super powers or not. Sometimes I was like "ok they have to". Other times I was like they seem pretty normal with just like a touch of over the top ability. Obviously not including Dr. Manhattan.
I don't see how it can be considered a great movie, but I don't think it was bad either. I guess maybe I get the feeling that if I had super powers I'd fit in pretty well with this group. I don't think I'd be very forgiving.

Ok wait... something bad happens to a dog????? This was not mentioned. Don't tell me what happens just yes or no does the dog get hurt? If so what scene preceeds it so I can leave the theatre for that part ( I want to see the movie, but can't possibly watch something bad happen to a doggie... it's bad enough when I'm normal , but with all the pregnancy hormones I might be traumatized for days...) Hmm, I actually don't remember what the fate of the dog -- dogs, really, I think there are two or three of them -- are. I remember what happens to their owner, but not the dogs. It was the rest of the scene that they're in that bothered me. I was trying to pick on something that someone who had seen the movie would recognize but that wouldn't be a spoiler for those who haven't seen it. Zeek might be able to tell you what happens to the dogs, I honestly don't remember.
