Even suggesting it - far too many folk here in the States are thrown in the slammer for ridiculous bullshit, which of itself would not be such a horrible thing, and then roughed up, raped or even murdered by the other inmates, and for what ?

I mean, simply matching the vague, general description of a suspect is enough to get you arrested, and spending the night in "The Fishbowl" isn't exactly a SAFE experience for anyone.

And now with DNA evidence bringing into clear focus just how many of those they actually convict are innocent of the crime - in a nation with what seems to be the highest incarceration rate on the planet...

Yeah, I have a problem with that, especially since we're supposedly and theoretically a nation of law and order, and as such, this particular thing brings to light just how much a mockery our so called justice system is.

Where the situation is far, far worse in regards to non-adult (read: less than human) "offenders" who did naught more than mock the assistant principle on your myspace page.
And with a rigged court besides.

So yeah, I have a seriously big issue with encouraging the abuse of prisoners who may or may not be innocent of any rational crime, any crime at all (see above, for judges paid off to convinct) or with a sentence horribly out of proportion for whatever act they committed in the first place.

Shouldn't I ?

Fair enough. I'm just saying some off-hand hyperbole hardly says anything about me.

Having said that, I could care less what happens to some kiddie fiddler in prison. I'm sorry if your judicial system is fantastically corrupt, but I still can't seem to drag up any sympathy for people who rape children.

Also, this guy is in Australia, not the US.

While it's likely this comment is gonna get buried in the usual unproductive bullshit, imma make it anyway.

And yes, I realize it was hyperbole, but it's a serious point in both of our societies that really does need to be addressed as well overdue.

When you espouse the principle of civil rights, of human rights - either you do so for EVERYONE, from Mother Theresa to Eddie Gein, or you do so for NO ONE.

They are either universal, or they are irrelevant, it's just that simple.

Look, for mine own, I would prefer to put him on his knees and spend a bullet, but that's wasteful when his own actions have given us the opportunity to mentally pick him to pieces as part of his sentencing for the crime, in hopes of preventing folks from winding up that messed up in the future.

Moral implications and lack of sympathy be damned, if you're going to decry vigilantism on one hand as you propose it on the other, that's just a mite ridiculous, innit ?

I don't have a problem with whatever this creep is sentenced to even if it's a date with the rope, so long as it's after a fair trial that results in a conviction and part of his properly executed sentence.

What I got a problem with is when folk decide the mere accusation of a crime is enough to strip a persons human rights from them, or that whatever sentence delivered isn't good enough for them and espousing adding stuff like this on top of it.

And also the fact that police LIE, as a matter of course, concerning said allegations, often for exactly the reason of convincing other inmates to act in this fashion..
"Just a few months prior to the Valentine's Day episode, deputies arranged for an inmate with a mental disability to experience prison rape: They locked him up with a federal prisoner serving a life sentence and claimed, falsely, that the mentally handicapped inmate had sexually molested a child. This could have led to homicide, given that child molesters are regularly beaten and killed behind bars. In this case, the victim was "only" raped and forced to perform oral sex on another prisoner."

Anyhows, it really comes down to everyone, even the lowest of the low, Eddie Gein, Fred Phelps, even genuine monsters like Carl Panzram, they all got the same basic rights you and I do, until a fair trial and properly executed sentence removes them, and then they lose only those which they are sentenced to for the duration of that sentence.

To do any less, to propose any less, makes us in the end not one whit better than them, and makes the entire concept just a trite mockery veiling a bunch of pissed off villagers with torches and pitchforks.

And here I though we left witchburning behind a couple centuries ago, more fool me, I guess.
