Aw c'mon, you know that was just me needling you, and of no more seriousness than you making the suggestion of hanging a sign round his neck.

It was just an opening to bring up a quite serious point that I thought worthy of some discussion and pondering, and one I feel is overdue to be addressed on a social consciousness level.

Normally I'd not point that out, but I wanna make it clear up front that I am not in any way flaming you nor taking your comment seriously, as much as simply using it to raise a valid issue to discuss here.

One that I really hope doesn't get drowned out by a flamewar.

I agree 100%.

We need to make our justice system about solving problems, or at least not making them worse.

Drug problem ? Go to jail ! Crazy and homeless ? Go to jail ! How does that help ?

And for the people we are pretty sure we can't help - violent sex offenders, serial rapists, child molesters, serial killers - we do need to keep them away from the rest of us, and yes, study them.
