Ayep, that's about right.

I'd be dumping a lot of that spending, myself.

Although infrastructure is something that we really do *need* to put some dosh into, but till we can trim the pork, we need to go with criticals only, but they DO need to be addressed, and quickly.

One way to handle it ?
Remember that battalion of 3rd Infantry they got assigned here ?
Attach some army engineers to it and prioritize critical infrastructure items such as bridges about to fall down as critical to maintain proper civic order, which they are, and let them boys go to town.

Yes, there will be some bitchin from unions and whatnot, but the minute that happens offer them contracts at a *rational* payscale, with oversight and requiring full congressional approval for cost overruns to be paid out.

Regardless of folks blaming them for it, the problems with the new orleans levees had everything to do with budget and nothing to do with skill or motivation on behalf of the army engineers, it's just that using them for civic projects rides a fine line - but right now it's really a critical situation as regards national infrastructure, so I am not opposed to them doing this both because it is necessary, and to hone what would be needful skills if they *are* ever deployed in a disaster or emergency, we can damn near bill it as a training exercise.

While telling private enterprise that they're just going to have to tighten their belts and do it on a goddamn budget, and bid competitatively for once.

Handled right, some of these issues are soluable, I just don't have a lot of faith in Government to do it right, or even well if they did.

But this much is true, if you ever wanna frustrate an army engineer to tears, show him a problem and then forbid him to fix it.

They're seriously nuts in a love-their-work-too-much kinda way.

It cannot be said enough, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to endlessly repeat it

I know it is stupid. I mean you posted it, and things you post are either pro-Republican, or anti-Democrat. Since this is a negative cartoon, it has to be about a Democrat. I'm just pointing out that the cartoon works equally well for the Bush administration.

Check your partisanship.

Actualy, that ain't true. After the initial recession W took over and tax cuts kicked into gear, the Dow was over 14,000 (Oct- '07 ), unemployment was low ( Under 5% for a full 2 years )

Just the facts, man. No hate.

P.S. ( from above )

There's just no accounting for there being all this spending. Obama said himself that tax cuts ALONE don't work. DUH. It was tax cuts and SPENDING that inflated our defecit. So why then, is Obama doing the EXACT SAME THING he says got us into this mess in the first place ?

Japan tried this , a decade ago, and it failed, miserably. Why the hell Obama is doing this can be only explained away by 1 thing - partisan politics. Pure and simple. This will fail as well, and we'll need a true Conservative to save us all.

Mitt Romney, come on down !!

SO Bush wasn't in power while the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression lurched into being? He didn't cut takes while taking on massive government spending, costly wars and expanding the Federal Government? He didn't swell the Federal Deficit to over $10 trillion dollars, leaving the next incombant to deal with a collapsing economy, AND a massive debt? Really? REEEAAAAALLLLY?

It also should be noted the economy didn't take a turn for the worst until 2 things happened.

Democrats gained control of the Congress

The min wage was jacked up to $5.85 per hr.

So, what you're saying Rap is that Bush's policies of requiring fradulent home loans to go unprosecuted by states, of bankrupting the country by lowering taxes and increasing spending, and of dropping capitalization requirements on investment banks had nothing to do with the economic meltdown.

All this despite the FACTS that Bush was handed a strong dollar, a thriving economy and a federal surplus - and that your hero, Bush, managed to turn all that around in a few years with heroic efforts at doing as many of the exact wrong things as he could manage.

You are such a tool.

Only it wasn't Bush's policy, it was the Democrats, for their involvement in Fannie and Freddie Mae which started the avalanche in the home lending crisis.

Bush's problem was he wasn't strong enough, thinking he could rub the back of the Dems and they'd play nice. Same stupid ass mistake daddy made. Instead, he should have raised more hell about Barney Frank blocking the GOP's attempts at regulatig Fannie and Freddie, but W's such a BIG Gov't kind of guy anyways, he chose not to rock the boat. He's not blameless, but clearly, this is primarily ( 80 % ) the fault of the Dems.

One need not be an economist to see that the economy started to go sideways after Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid took over after the '06 election.

You'll want to ignore all that, of course, but there's no coincidence there, in the least.

You continually point out the high of over 14,000, but you conveniently leave out the fact that on Bush's last day in office, the Dow closed below 8,000. You credit him with that 14,000 peak - which occurred almost a year after Dems took control of Congress - yet you blame him not one bit for the lows. Sounds pretty partisan to me.

It's all in how you look at the numbers. Look at it from the peak to the end of his 2nd term, and you see Bush presiding over a 45% drop in the Dow in less than two years.

Rap

And yet, when you look at ALL the numbers for the two things you're willing to talk about - unemployment and the DOW - especially the years you left out on purpose - you'll see that Clinton started with far higher unemployment numbers, dropped them far lower for far lonnger, AND had a net gain of the DOW from roughly 2000 to 8000. And can I mention again left the dollar strong and the government budget in the black ?
(And btw, the unemployment figures I got from the BLS don't match yours. You must be citing some more 'Rap facts' TM.)

Ah, the rare Undecuple Post!

Kwicko,

And he would be correct in doing so: Govt. is always (until the last few months, with this bail out nonsense) been writing next years budget. Generally it's accepted that the delay is 1-2 years. Hence Clinton 1 policies enact around 1994, and Clinton 2 from 98-02, and Bush 1 02-06, bush 2 will still be effecting us until 2010. So, no, dems in congress wouldn't have any effect until 08.

That said, govt. has relatively little effect on the market, and traditionally, fairly little effect on the economy, more recently, as we enter a more socialist/corporatist state, and govt. and private sector interlinkage becomes an issue.

Credit market has much more of an impact, and presidents can have an impact on that. Hence a republican would be perfectly justified in blaming the crash of 1929 on Woodrow Wilson, and the great depression as well. But Wilson was basically a creation of the banks.

Normally, I shrug at these kinds of analyses. Politicians are rats in cages biting each others heads off.

Not partisan at all. When W came into office, the dot com bubble had burst, not to mention Enron...remember all that ? Had zero to do w/ the Bush policies. Then there was 9/11. A major financial hit. After Bush's taxe cuts had time to take effect, things started rollin along again. Then, in '06, the Dems took control of Congress. Add to that the hike in the min wage, and Fannie/ Freddie's chickens coming home to roost, the economy started to slide.

It's all in how you look at the numbers. Look at it from the peak to the end of his 2nd term, and you see Bush presiding over a 45% drop in the Dow in less than two years.

Yeah, and you'd like to ignore the rebound the economy had, despite a ridiculous ( and turns out, unnecessary ) spike in the price of Oil, again, an external force that slowed growth. Imagine what the economy would have been like had gas not tripled in price.

Naww... forgeit it.I'm asking a simpleton to 'imagine' anything. My bad.

No, your figures are in line with the #'s I got from the US Bureau of Labor Statistitcs. Dunno what you're fussin' about. Take the time to follow the link.I posted it for a reason, ya know. As it turns out, rap facts are simply FACTS.

As for Clinton, so what ? Not all economic periods are the same. What he faced and what W faced weren't carbon copies, so I dont' really get your point.

You DO have a point, right ?

Ahh Rap, Rap, Rap

Ever the fact-denier.

Please note that unemployment went UP from a low (under Clinton) of 3.9 to 5.0 BEFORE September 11, 2001. That the supposed dot com crash dropped the DOW a mere 200 points. And that the DOW recovered from September 11 2001 by January 2002, a mere 4 months later.

But let's say that NOBODY'S policies really come into force until a year later. For Bush, that would mean from 2002 until now. That makes Bush responsible for the DOW starting at 8000 and ending at 8000. For unemployment starting at 5.7 and ending at 7.6. For the federal government going from a surplus to a deficit.

And are you really trying to claim (yet again) that Barney Frank is responsible for the entire collapse of the banking industry because of an offhand comment he made while the REPUBICANS controlled the senate AND the White House ? Really, now.

Late '04 and into '07. Look at the numbers.

They're below 5%. Look at what happens when the Dems take over, in '06.

Case made.

Next ?

Late 2001, effects of the Dot Com burst and 9/11. Major financial impact, and quite frankly, amazing the damge wasn't far worse.

You have no case.
