Of films I've watched on DVD recently, these two may not be well known but well a try.

Kite Runner - a young boy in Afghanistan who cruelly betrays his best friend, then flees the country with his father when the Russians invade only to have to return many years later, when the country is in the clutch of the Taliban, to repay his depth. Visually beautiful and it really gets you a sense of a culture that may be different but still beautiful - and all that historical tragedy. Hopeful, though.

Paris, je t'aime - a movie in episodes, each one a few minutes in a different part of Paris. Sad, hilarious, hopeful, profound... some of the episodes are absolutely great. I adore the one with Natalie Portman and the last one, especially.

One of the Doylesotwn Trilogy, along with The Commitments and The Van. All good.

AR, was that the film that was packaged with some train flick from India or Middle East? Something Express?

I saw mention of The Darjeeling Limited - which is a beautifully understated film. Also by Wes Anderson - The LIfe Aquatic, give that a whirl.

Also just remembered the plethora of Old British films from the Ealing Studio day:

"the water is Wide" with Jon Voight playing the young Pat Conroy( author) on a teaching assignmnet to Yamacraw island. one of my all time favourite films, and I beleive it inspired my career choices.

Also love the tv film version of "a Prayer for Owen Meany"
