Season 1: Episode 22 of 24 Title : FOUNTAIN
----------------------------------

With the majority of the crew on leave Mal, Kaylee, Simon and River are left to keep themselves occupied. Kaylee and Simon take the time to become ‘familiar’ and Mal just avoids them. River being curious corners the captain in an awkward moment that has her kiss him. Mal speechless and about to respond is side-tracked when a wave from a friend of Inara’s from the guild say’s Inara needs Simons help.

Turns out Inara isn’t as healthy as she appears and although it’s not life threatening she needs a specific medicine to pass the guild strict medical requirements. Mal concerned but expressing it through bravado reiterates that he’s only going to help if he knows what the drug is for. Sensing Juniper’s (Inara’s friend) awkwardness the Doc thinking on his feet pacifies Mal’s curiosity and they fly off to Persephone - where Mal believes he may locate the medicine.

Moments later Mal and Simon are with Badger negotiating a price for the drug. It’ll cost Mal a hefty percentage on his next job with Badger, but it’s worth it. On their leaving they pick up Wash and Zoe who while peeved at their leave being cut short, understand when Mal mentions that Inara is in trouble.

When Simon and Mal reach Juniper at the guild medical facility - Inara is not looking too good. Mal only catches a glimpse of her before Juniper takes the Doc away to administers the drug via a syringe. There is a silence between Simon and Inara on meeting, before Inara asks him to keep the true purpose of the drug a secret. He agrees, but informs Inara that the captain knows more than he lets on and that the supplier of the medicine was Badger. Inara informs Simon that guild law requires it’s subjects to have a certain ‘youthful’ look that could only be sustained through drug use. Simon flashes her a concerned glance.

Back on Serenity the crew are happy to see Inara. She assures them all that she is fine, thanks to Simon and Mal. Kaylee grabs Simon calling him a hero…More prudent to Mal however, is whether or not he’ll have to go off on these jaunts in search of more of this medicine! Inara is just about to answer him, when River latches onto Mal and gives him a warm hug… The crew look on astonished!
Mal just walks away…

(Had to rush this one - sorry AgentRouka)

Hi, I'm back from my little holiday break-from-the-internets. :)

I'm intrigued by the weird show of affection by River! Hero worship gone too far? *g*

The Inara plotline has me a little sceptical. So you are one of the "Inara is actually 76 years old" and "the Guild is oppressive of its members" schools of thought? Awww. Oh well, still sounds like quite a ride! Plus, Badger!

Also intrigued by Simon and Kaylee getting cosy this early in the series!

Ahh no not exactly. It was more the idea of her immitating Simon and Kaylee. A kind of curiosity for the event of kissing someone. That didn't translate though. My poor writing. Sorry.

No actually I was going to lead to (later - maybe season 3 ) that Inara has a terminal disease that will eventually kill her (barring any other mishaps) and that when she isn't taking the drug the effects are more evident. But I wanted to play the 'mislead' a little more because I think on the surface the anti ageing thing is the more obvious conclusion (from the audience point of view)
However I will conceed that when it comes to thinking about the characters of Serenity/Firefly Inara is last on the list. Inara is a difficult character. She's not fleshed out enough in the show or the film, and it makes it very difficult to really establish her actions and/or intent. For me anyway.

Yeah? Cool.
I like the idea that at first they are secretive about it, but that little clues of their relationship are given by River through Rivers' odd random acts of affection (mostly towards Mal because it's funnier), that though seemingly out of place, are actually indicative of things she is witnessing between Simon and Kaylee.

Oh no, not really. :) The two things are generally related, anyway. What teen crush that leads to kissing is actually lurve, after all, but a venue to for sexual experimentation? :)

Heart-breaking evil! :D

It would, perhaps, be a bit of overkill, since it immediately paints the Guild in a negative light, and casts a really doubtful shadow about Inara. I mean, if not taking her anti-aging meds makes her look fifty, this is more than a little suspicious. Plus, it messes with the perception of Inara's character to put her age into question. Whether she is actually 27 or 40 would matter, behavior-wise. So I'd tweak that plotline (or misdirection) a little, if I was you, to make it less monumental, more of a passing thing like in "Ariel".

In general, I love the idea!! :D

Don't blame you for that. Not everyone must love her like I do!

Oooooh! Now THAT is a great misdirection! Because it would freak Mal out to the extreme and really fit with the "crazy" and there would be this incredibly sweet pay-off when it's revealed what she is really doing! Awww!

Something from later in your series, pretty please!!!

grr arrg.

I failed to notice that this thread topic had been duplicated when I sent my newest episode blurb to the previous thread. Here it is recopied:

A friend of mine first noted that the actress Sarah Chalke from the TV show Scrubs looks very much like Jewel Staite. Almost like a sister...

Then I had an idea. How about a fun little episode about Kaylee where the crew is required to set down on the very planet/moon where Kaylee first came aboard with Bester. The reason they're here is that Kaylee's sister (played by Sarah Chalke) has sent her a wave on the Cortex for (insert reason). Once aboard, (perhaps she needs a free ride somewhere and is freerolling on sis? This would annoy profit motivated Mal) we find out that she has a history of trying to steal Kaylee's boyfriends and immediately starts hitting on Simon who has NO CLUE how to handle it. In the end, hilarity ensues and Kaylee's sis is eventually dumped off at her destination. By episodes end the process of meeting her actually strengthens Simon and Kaylee's relationship. In the final scene we'd be gifted with a 1st kiss. This of course flys in the face of their relationship in the movie, but I'm thinking "what-if" had the show continued in a proper fashon.

I like this episode because it serves as a comedy in my mind, something needed after an episodic Drama like my idea above for "We Were Soldiers"

bluesuncompanyman - Nice episode there fella! Always good to have the humour. I can visualise this one being one you want to re-watch :D I wonder what Jayne would make of Kaylee's sister?

I know what you mean about ignoring the film for these creative conjectures. I'm of a similar notion. Book and Wash are just too rich to ignore for further episodes..
Good to have you contribute.. D'you have any more?

It was chaotic and riotous - but fun because the mahem was caused by my nieces and nephews who are just hilarious fun.

I'm not sure I follow you here... As I read it what do think to the guild being just 'Her' excuse for her actions, so that INARA paints them in a less than positive light. Would that work?

Aw thanks - No I like Inara and her put downs of Jayne in particular, but I feel her development was just getting started when things ended. Her breakdown in Hearts of Gold really has me welling up (I really don't do crying) and i still struggle to rewatch that scene as a result. I just wish the writers had her mucking in with the crew a little more or vice versa.

Thanks. Best of all would be the hurt in Mal's face when he realises River has no actual true feelings for him. Kinda like when someones crush on you ends.

Of course, but neither would the reader know that and thus assume it for a fact that the Guild is kind of oppressive, but it also seems really OOC that Inara would do anything to paint them in a bad way, considering how well she usually speaks of them and how much she struggles to get Mal to respect her job and choices. It'd be like wearing a t-shirt that says "Mal is right about the Guild". Doesn't want to make sense to me.

What? He'd be relieved like a cat climbing out of a pool! I doubt he'd love having a teenaged River having a crush on him and using him as her experimental sex toy! He has all these fatherly feelings for her!

-------------------------
Season 2. Episode 4. Biohazard.
-------------------------

While repairs are made to Serenity at the planet of Calisto (paid for with Jaynes inheritance - Ref: Se02 Ep01) a terminally injured man manages to smuggle on board a tube of biohazardous material. The crew of Serenity returning from their shore leave are unaware and take off once again bound for the black in their nice 'Shiny' smooth running ship!. It's a few hours later and the crew begin to notice that they aren't feeling too well. Kaylee is first to fall ill and the Doc examines her but is unable to ascertain her problem before he collapses. With the remainder of the crew concerned they consider what needs to be done and while trying to think of a solution the majority of the crew collapse also.

All that is except River and Mal. Mal though is poorly and barely able to stand. But he does stay conscious long enough to tell River to hail Badger for help.

River manages to hail Badger! and asks for his help in curing the crew. Badger agrees to help someone form the ol' homestead of course, and even informs River that a wave has been buzzing about some stolen biohazardous material on Calisto. So her approach to Persephone has to be quiet. He'll have his men, in full quarantine, come and meet Serenity and take the crew to a med facility on Persephone. He'll square up with Mal later (insert big Badger grin)

When the crew wakes up they find themselves being overseen by Badger - who keen to exploit his good turn demands upon Mal some kind of payment. Mal forfeits the remainder of the inheritance and allows Badger the prize of returning the biohazard material he located in Serenity's hold back to those that want it for the handsome reward being offered.

With deals squared up, the crew fly away once again - bemoaning thier bad luck at having lost thier money, but grateful Badger isn't asking questions as to who River actually is! Mal though wants know how come River was immune and wonders if it isn't time they find out just what it is was done to her!

Ha - yes indeed. You're absolutely right. Can't have that... Say you've really got into the head of Inara haven't you? Hmmmm *Rubs chin* Me-thinks you should write more Inara episodes AgentRouka.
