Moench & Gulacy's recent Master Of Kung Fu, a collection of the 6 issue miniseries, is AWESOME!!! It's like a Bond movie with more main characters!
Watchmen is obviously a great one (I loved it)...and I've read that League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is excellent...any others Browncoats can recommend?

For the more whimsical, Neil Gaiman is good. Well-written, well drawn.

V for Vendetta is a fantastic read.
In regards to Neil Gaiman, I recently read Preludes and Nocturnes, the first book in his Sandman series. Amazing, and confusing, and something of a tease.
Currently reading the Fray collection, (yes, yes, I know I'm late with that one, quiet you) and I'm loving it. And that's only one issue in!
Other than that, I recommend 30 Days of Night (I've so far only read the original) and The Fountain. Yes, the movie with Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz, but the graphic novel is based on Darren Aronofsky's original idea which wasn't simplified for budget's sake. Beautiful art.
And, of course, the Angel, Buffy and Firefly comics. Fantastic.
And a few of the Hellboy ones.
And for anyone who is game enough to read a VERY messed up comic, Crossed, by Garth Ennis is going at the moment, and is incredibly messed up. Unlike something like Hostel (which I hated) however, it's also relatively creative and smart, and the fact that it's a comic helps dull the line to reality slightly.
I know what you're thinking...and no, I'm not a nerd. Well, ok, I am, but I like it that way.

Watchmen, V For Vendetta are must reads.
Gaiman is almost a must read. The Sandman series is an obvious one but also his other stuff - Wolves In The Wall (aimed at kids but still good), Marvel 1602, Violent Cases.
Moore's The Killing Joke if you like Batman and Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.
These are my faves.

Cisall, if you don't mind japanese manga, give Battle Angel Alita a spin. I think it'd be right up your alley. Plus, it's similar to your own Dark Angel....

The 10 novel collection of Sandman remains my favorite since the 90's when I first read it. Yes Preludes and Nocturnes is slightly muddled. Gaiman himself said that he was trying to find his voice as he wrote it. By the time one gets to Seasons of the Mist, the writting is astonishingly strong and some of the greatest stories I've ever read are contained in the later editions.

And my all time Gaiman favorite:
Exiles - in Book 10, The Wake.
Please don't judge the series by Preludes and Nocturnes. It would be identical to judging Buffy on the strength of season 1 alone.
