You know, I love The Fountain (one of my alltime favourite films) but I keep forgetting its a graphic novel too. I've definitely got to keep an lookout for that.

For me, I've definitely got to throw in a couple of Superman stories:
Secret Identity (which tells the tale of a kid named Clark Kent by his parents, something he gets teased about often, but who finds he actually isn't that far different from the character of Superman himself. It really is fantastic.
Red Sun, tells the What-if tale of Superman's ship landing in Russia instead of the state of Kansas. Really interesting stuff.
(also, whilst we're on the subject of superman, the one-off Batman/Superman issue (think it was 36) written by the late Sam Loeb is definitely worth a read)

Also Brian Micahel Bendis' run on Daredevil is amazing. Along with Whedon's X-men, it got me hooked on comics again

As has been mentioned, I'd recommend anything written by Niel Gaiman, with The Sandman being his signature work. Can't recommend it enough.

I also have the full runs of Preacher and Transmetropolitan.

Been really enjoying the Buffy season 8 stuff, as well as The Walking Dead, lately.

The Fountain graphic novel isn't that different from the film, even though the back cover goes on about it being "the ultimate director's cut" and such. But the ART! It's magnificent. If you love the film, it's definitely worth having.

hey,
figured I'd bump this instead of making a new thread.
I'm going to go out and buy some TPB's to keep me busy reading. Now that I'm back at uni, I find that reading stuff definitely helps my imagination keep going and helps me write scripts and such.
So I need some help.
My list consists of the following:
* The Walking Dead
* Sandman
* Death: High Cost of Living
* Runaways
* Astonishing X-Men
* Scott Pilgrim (mainly interested due to the upcoming film to be directed by Edgar Wright)
* Pride of Baghdad
* Blood: A Tale (mainly interested because of the art by Kent Williams)
* Ex Machina
* Death and Return of Superman

I'd love if anyone could give me opinions on any of these works, as these are ones I've seen that I'm interested in. Also, if you know of anything else similar which is better, let me know of that too!

For an idea of what I own:
* Watchmen
* V for Vendetta (thought this was better than Watchmen tbh)
* The Fountain
* Angel: After the Fall
* Buffy S8
* Serenity
* Y: The Last Man
* The Darkness
* Wanted

As you can see, I don't have an extensive collection, although I'd love to change that.

Wow..long thread, but yeah, I trust the opinions of you guys, so I'd really appreciate any help at all.

I stand by my opinion of Neil Gaiman's works expressed higher on this thread. Another graphic you haven't listed but could consider is Stardust. The story is wonderful. The crappy movie made from it...not so much. Stardust reads more like a novel, with artwork on each page that scrolls or wraps itself around the text.

Additionally I own and frequently enjoy The Dream Hunters by Gaiman. It is also told in a text fashion with artwork adjacent. Here's a couple links if you are curious.

Beyond Gaiman, I find myself collecting the Conan series of novels by Dark Horse. Although at times Conan can get slightly campy, their re-telling of Robert Howard's classic The Tower of the Elephant was supurb.

I tried to read League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and had trouble getting into it. This from someone who owns Watchmen and V for Vendetta. And of course Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is also excellent. I took a class on graphic novels and actually enjoyed some of the borderline non-fiction ones I read.

Maus, Vol. 1 and 2 by Art Spiegelman. (intriguing and moving portrayal of Jews trying to survive in Holocaust Germany. The Jews are shown as mice and the Germans are shown as cats.)

Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. (Coming of age journey of a young girl raised in Iran during the revolution and trying to cope with the stunning changes the country went through)

Safe Area Gorazde by journalist Joe Sacco. (Check this one out if you can! Not only do you read an accurate account of went on during the war in Bosnia for the survivors--think Independents trying to eke out an existence after Unification--you see it with stunning clarity through the eyes of a brilliant artist/author. The humanity expressed here is so genuine.)

Well, I've actually seen Stardust the movie, and I actually quite enjoyed the damn thing! The trailers and such made it look horrible, went and saw the film, and it was quite extraordinary, so I should definitely give the novel a try. The problem is I've only seen it in this 'limited edition hardback' or something that is rather expensive, but I'll see what I can do.

I've read Dark Knight Returns and Persepolis, and rather enjoyed both of those. (Also saw the film of Persepolis which was fairly brilliant!)

But I shall definitely try Maus, as it's always intruiged me, and I shall look out for Safe Area Gorazde.

And of course, instead of narrowing my list down, I've now made it longer! Damn the need for money!!
Though..it's my birthday this Monday...so I shall treat myself. :)

Not sure if already mentioned, but at waqlmart i noticed a watchmen DVD, apparently had all of the pages on the DVD, so you might flip through them onscreen. Not sure, didn't get it.
