Fandango. I always refer to this one as chick flick for dudes. It's not a comedy nor is it a buddy picture but it has elements of both. The only recognizable cast members are Judd Nelson and Kevin Costner.
The story centers on five friends who have just graduated college and are facing the reality of adult responsibilities. Set in the Vietnam era, two of the "groovers" receive notice that they have been drafted into the military. This becomes the catalyst for a last hurrah road trip. There is some great scenery, outstanding dialogue and more than a few misadventures. I cannot recommend this film highly enough.

Nice pick Singate. Great film, a bit sad near the end though.
I think there is a strong message buried in Fandango. You only live once. Make each moment count.

Nobody's Fool - subtle and touching, Jessica Tandy and Paul Newman show their class.
The Fastest Gun Alive - 'small' western that hits the mark; Glenn Ford's performance near sublime perfection.
Talk of the Town - Cary Grant, Jean Arthur and Ronald Colman have a ball with a sparkling script, under the deft direction of George Stevens.

For folk who like Walkabout , there's an obscure film , also from Oz , called We Of The Never Never , that is definitely a classic...Much of what I consider quintessentially Australian is in this film...
Oddly , since seeing Australia a few days ago , I've been thinking of old and lovable films...
Brainstorm--Natalie Wood's last movie , a sci-fi with Chris Walken
Until The End Of The World--with William Hurt , it's a sci-fi with Max Von Sydow , and a U2 song of the same name in the soundtrack...Very cerebral , very interesting film...
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind--Speaking in a strictly technical sense , it IS brain damage...Plus , it was apparently a bit of inspiration for Joss and Eliza's DOLLHOUSE. Kirsten Dunst jumping on the bed in her undies...What's not to like ?
Slipstream--Probably one of the few films ever made in Cappadocia...Plus , Mark Hamill , lots of weirdness , and odd flying machines...
Map Of The Human Heart--Unusual film about an Inuk who goes to WW2 England , and his adventures in love...
Never Cry Wolf--From a Farley Mowat story , an epic tale of a naturalist taken into the Canadian Arctic and abandoned to a project to study the wolves...Plus , his interactions with the native peoples and their environment...
The Dish--About the folk who manned the Australian dish antenna that received downlinked video from the lunar surface during the Apollo 11 flight...
The Earthling--William Holden's last film , about an old man who has gone to the Australian outback to die , but an orphaned kid (Ricky Schroder) kind of gets in the way of his plan...
Last Of The Dogmen--Barbara Hershey , Tom Berenger...Seems that Hershey is some kind of cultural anthropologist , and she and Berenger discover a remote mountain valley where a Native American group live as they always did...

Unfortunately, the dvd version is a nightmare. Called a "directors cut" it has many scenes(fragments) missing from the VHS version. So in that way it's certainly "cut".
I had no idea of that,I need to track down a vhs copy now,because I'm a fan of that film.You also mentioned Miller's Crossing in another post and that is my favorite Cohen brothers film.You will find no better dialogue in film.
I'd also like to add Ghost Dog with Forrest Whitaker to the list.

Great post - good lists all around guys.
I would like to submit the following in no particular order....
The Minus Man - a very good Owen Wilson as a serial killer with Cheryl Crow, Janene Garofalo, Dwight Yoakom. etc.
Going Places (I might have mentioned it in another thread) - a French film with Gerard Depardieu. Very poignant film that is part comedy part drama and all good. Deals with 2 drifters in south France (1972) and their misadventures with women.
Days of Heaven - someone had this movie on their list and I thought that was a good choice so I'm including it on my list. A very good story.

I forgot to mention Fate is the Hunter (1964). Maybe it was known at the time, but not so much now. Glenn Ford, Rod Taylor, Jane Russell, Nancy Kwan, Wally Cox and introducing Suzanne Pleshette.
Love to watch it when it's on.
