I don't think it's a "manscuse", really. I'm a woman and I think it's more than valid to think that raising babies on Serenity is a bad idea. I always read it as Zoe refusing to truly compromise in their marriage. Wash has completely adapted to Zoe's life, but she's not willing to contemplate changing her life for their common goal of having children. She's hardly dealt with the war, has no life seperate of Mal's ideas - safe the choice to marry - and now she wants to add children to a dangerous environment. If Wash hadn't refused, I'd have declared them both insane, frankly. :)

Hey if it weren't for Kaylee pointing out to the good ol' captain, that if Mal were to leave Jayne, he'd most likely blab about River and Simon - Mal would have left him there yet!

This is hilarious! I bet it was some kind of weird, recent accident of acquired wealth.. Jayne can barely read and his Ma's writing was also fairly... simple. That home-made hat, Mattie's damplung, his Pa's welder job... They must be the quirkiest bunch, living with that much money all of a sudden!
I don't even want to imagine how Mal feels about being given this money. Guilty, greedy, relieved, bewildered! I love this!

After a slow-building, painful arc of increasing emotional volatility for Zoe, we are sucked into a colorful swirl of an episode taking place in a hallucinatory dreamscape.
After Zoe is hurt and knocked out in a U-Day bar fight, Ghost Wash, narrator River, brighty-bright colors and a homage to the wizard of Oz very reminiscent of Wash's dinosaur tales leave tin soldier Zoe realizing that she had a heart all along. Wash didn't give it to her, he only helped her remember that she had one and he always will.
Interspersed with the dream-bits are normal color, crew bits dealing with the way the developing political unrest post-Miranda affects the crew as a whole with everyone extremely insecure about the future of their lifestyle and no one more so than Mal. Cowardly Lion Mal tells them they are better of separate, even though it's not what he really wants, Scarecrow River hides out in the informary with Zoe (while narrating the dream bits) and has no easy fix ready, while Dorothy Inara watches news of rioting on Sihnon and contemplates which place is no place like home.
We close on Zoe waking up with a new will to live and be happy, faced with the bad news of Mal's separation plans and everyone's uncertainty. She looks both resigned and determined. Like anything is possible now that Zoe's back in full force.
Ohhh - how delicious is this idea! Dreamy episodes are intoxicating. I remember feeling the same way watching 'Restless' from Buffy season 4. You are just swept away with the lush coloured imagery. What an interesting idea to apply to Firefly. I can just imagine a network trying to grasps this one :D Whatever made you think of this... Wow.

Hmm. Well if you're going to be all common sense, and right about it.... I guess you have a valid point. Zoe hasn't really moved beyond the war and I suppose from a husband point of view Zoe never showed Wash that she had even tried being less of a 'warrior'. Ok I'm sold..... Do I get points for making up the word 'manscuse'

Based on an eccentric old aunt I had as a kid. I remember her being the poor aunty, who sat by an electric fire with one bar on. (this is in the middle of winter by the way) and with a blanket over her legs - bemoaning her lot and stressing over how she would be able to pay for a plumber when the bathroom pipes burst. After her death we learnt that she had £300000 in the bank! I remember my Grandad being completely gobsmacked. Took him a while to come to terms with that... especially as he had to fix her burst pipes.

The familiar sight of the crew sat around the dinner table in fine friendly and jovial form. For once they are all sat listening to River tell a childhood tale about Simon getting lost and crying. Much to Simon's embarrassement. The room rips with laughter when she is done. A beat. Then a sound somewhat like a "Klunk!" resonates across Serenity's hull. It's curious in it's manner as it actually seems to 'crawl' across the outer surface.
Mal suits up to examine the hull from the outside. We along with the rest of the crew listen in on his radio mic as he describes what he's seeing. On the underside of Serenity he notices what he thinks is a coffin type box... He's not sure... He goes to investigates but the radio emits static which the others are unable to hear through and when it clears.... Not a word from Mal? However further rumbles across the hull are heard. On investigation out of the bridge window they notice debris around the ship. Looks like they are passing through remnants from an old destroyed boat...
Zoe and Jayne suit up to look for Mal. A few tense moments later they return - with no Mal but they have found the box he was refering to. Zoe orders the doc to quarantine the coffin - which on cleaning of the glass plate reveals a body inside, and she orders Wash go to the bridge and look for Mal. She is concerned Mal has been knocked unconscious and is drifiting away from Serenity.
As the critical point for Mal's air supply approaches River steps onto the bridge saying she can find Mal - but she needs absolute silence as there are others screaming out there... Zoe obliges. With time running out the crew surround River as she carefully navigates Serenity through the debris. It's looking hopeless until she breaks her silence and tells Jayne to open the hatch doors. She has found Mal. Inara is the first down to the cargo bay to meet a breathless Mal. Relief! The doc examines him for CO2 inhilation. He's fine. Radio was shorted out when he got struck by debris...
Later as River sleeps in her bunk we hear voices from her dream...? Then BANG! River wakes with a start... We crash cut to the coffin and a slow track in on the body inside!

I love the image of River locating Mal through her gift. That's a very unique and clever way to use it in the plot of an episode! :D The episode echoes a little of both Bushwhacked and Out of Gas, but has enough meat of its own, very nice!

I think for the sake of advancing the series plot it wouldn't hurt to separate the crew for a time. Not forever, but for the stretch of maybe a season or half. It would vastly widen the scope, giving views into many different part of the 'verse and would allow a more intense exploration of different character relationships. I am bad at plot, though, so I have no concrete ideas.

Yikes! Only this afternoon I was thinking about an Inara based one... She's a tough one though - I'm going to need some time. I just typed for half an hour then threw it out. I'm going to have to come back to it.
