I said this last week on a different thread: 2008 is 1976. History is repeating.
1. The country is/was angry at a previous administration they feel betrayed them (Nixon then, Bush now)
2. The people have made an EMOTIONAL choice to reject a good decient man who also happens to be a naval hero. This person is seen illogically as an extension of the previous evil administration when he is in fact, not. (Ford then, McCain now)
3. The nation has instead favored a new face in the form of a socialist who just 18 months previous the populace never even knew. (Carter then, Obama now)
4. As an extension of the country's referendum against the previous administration, more new left leaning congressmen/senators are elected as a functon of straight ticket voting and not split-ticket voting. Many voters simply fill in the bubble/punch out the hole for the democratic party. They do not consider each line item on the ballot and don't consider each race as a different event. (Cartermania then, Obamania now)
I predicted those things. Now they are fact. The remaining 2 items on my divination list need 4 years to crystalize. They are:
5. The new socialistic administration will be fully supported by the new left leaning congress. An anti-business climate will begin to form. As companies feel tax pressure they will look elsewhere for profits and leave the USA for greener fields. Investment, which is the grease in the cogs of the economy, will taper and slow. Slowly at first, but then faster, unemployment will rise. The people will begin to get angry. (1977-1981 then 2009-2013 now)
6. Four years after the general election, a new election will be held and an old face will appear on the opposition ticket. This person was first introduced to the public 4-years prior and now has the full attention of the people. This is the next president. (Reagan in 1980 , Palin in 2012) Roll your eyes at the thought of Palin. It's ok. In 1976 the same thing happened with "Reagan the Hollywood Actor".
As I watch these events unfold, all I can hear in my mind's ear is the repeating voice of the Cylon Hybrid at the end of Battlestar Galactica Razor:
"All of these things have happened before, and they will happen again. All of these things have happened before, and they will happen again. All of these...."
Do not fear me. Our's is a peaceful race and we must live in harmony.

I don't care for those folk, and haven't been able to reason with em, but... even I have my limits, and without some evidence that the rightward end of the political spectrum isn't as completely foul as they believe (and to date, I've seen no evidence to the contrary, and all too much to support it)... then I am simply not going to stick my neck out by acting against them, assuredly not for folks I feel would stab me in the back the moment I turned to defend them, oh hell no.
I hoped Obama would rise above all that, as that was the central theme of his campaign. But with the announcements of Emmanuel & Podesta getting key positions in his Administration, it seems a likely future. The real sad part is that there are a lot of bad apples in his own party, and now I'm sure they're safe with these guys. Nothing changes!

He has, Riverlove, far as I'm aware of.
But there's a damned lot of folk who got stomped on by the GOPs administration or their plans, collectives of "little folk" who got kicked in the teeth one way or another, and they're severely pissed about it.
Thing is, you get that with ANY administration there ever was on this ball of muddy water, cause you just can't please everybody, sure...
And yes, I am well aware that some of these folk, too damn many of em, got legit gripes and damn good reason, but to be flat out honest I think we both know not all of em do, some folk don't need a reason to hate, and the combination of bein stepped on, and steeped IN fear and hate for the past six years, has left a lotta folks looking for a target to beat on in retaliation, you understand ?
And watching the GOP stumble and fall, there's gonna be a rush to put the boot in, not so much human nature, so much as a society that teaches THOSE kind of "values" no matter what it lip-services for forms sake.
Like Mal explained to Jayne in Jaynestown, it ain't about them, it's about what those folk need, what they need to believe in order to make it through the day - and some folk need an enemy, someone to blame for their misery, and the GOP painted a nice big bullseye on themselves and then tripped and fell, with just about inevitable results.
My concern is that boot party will escalate rather than tapering off, feed the ire instead of sating it, cause there's a damn lot of anger and pent up frustrations there from the way things have gone up till now.
Some folk like poke fun at Obama's hopeful message, but me, I say be thankful for it, cause one of the possible alternatives was to tap into that rage, that hate, and then we'd have no doubt had another night of long knives, wouldn't we ?
Folks talkin shit about Obama goons and stormtroopers have NO FREAKIN IDEA how bad it could really go for them, if that card had been played.
So I give props to the man for NOT playing it, in spite of the fact that I really don't care for him - he's already done ONE thing right that the past two administrations have not.
I'd not waste an opportunity to build rather than destroy - and if some folks won't let go of their hate, then just rise above them and let them sink into the mire of their own destructiveness.
Or, alternately, folks on the right wing could spit bile back, be petty and mean and threatening, inviting that very behavior against them and justifying it in the minds of those who would act on it, painting a bright red bullseye on themselves for the ire of a folk crushed under fear, loathing and misery so long that they just can't let it go.
SOMEONE has to let go, SOMEONE has to be an adult...
And for that, if naught else, I throw Obama a couple of props before he's even sworn in, cause he didn't fuck that up, and he could have.

I have no illusions; Malcolm Reynolds would have little use for me, he'd see me as dreamer- someone with unrealistic hopes for what government could do FOR it's peeps, but YOU...
He'd flat out view you as an Alliance toady, and you can't even see that. What do you think? If you could talk to Mal, you think he'd see you as some sort of independent? The way you spout off against freedom? The way you back up the neo-fascist curtailing of civil & international human rights? The way you rationalize every Republican-initiated military adventure?
