I think you are mistaken. Pre-Palin there were days when McCain showed up and was greeted by one local reporter (happened in Columbus in late July). Now 15,000 people just showed up at a local rally...to see Palin and the fella she's running with. I was there...it was Palin we came to see. 70% of us didn't vote for McCain in the primary...it was Palin that got us on our feet screaming that yes, we're all Joe the Plumber.
Palin energized the Republican campaign. The convention was over, dead, cancelled. The election was doomed to fail. Then Palin came along a lit a fire under the Republicans setting the stage for McCain to make his case.
The liberals (and dissaffected Republicans) have been saying this stuff about Palin since the day she was announced. Remember those articles about how she would drop out before the nomination or that she'd be quickly replaced since she was such a bad choice. I don't know anybody who could go through what she did that week between her announcement and her speech that could do what she did.
The idea that Palin is dragging the ticket is just plain wrong (which is why it made the papers). Its like that business of Palin not talking to the media, when the fact is she's done more interviews than Barrack, McCain, and Biden combined...Biden hasn't done a press conferance in more then a month, headline 'Palin Not Accessable to Media'.
Not to mention the blatent sexism in the coverage of her. Not many stories on Biden's hair and clothes...and just what is up with his wife and kids? Don't know? That's because there hasn't been much coverage of them...

I have a maybe weird defintion of "truth", and I think the problem is that "lie" is not the exact opposite of "truth".
IMHO "truth" is how close your understanding is to reality. IMHO a better term would be "accuracy". A "fact" is a limited truth: it is an accurate representation of part of the picture, but not the whole picture. A "lie" is a deliberate misreprentation of what you believe is the truth. Since we will never fully grasp "the truth" most human statements lie somewhere between "facts" and "lies": "misunderstandings"
