How unusual is this, really? Don't they all wear ridiculously expensive clothes and hair styles? And make-up, come to think of it?

It really is out of proportion. I mean...only $150,000? That seems low. Can't imagine Hillary or Obama being seen in public for less then a quarter million...and John Edwards...
I'm kind of glad we learned our lesson after Katherine Harris. If you find yourself under the national spotlight...for whatever reason...leave the makeup to the professionals.

Sure makes John Edwards' $400 haircut look downright cheap by comparison. Sarah Palin's hair and makeup bill alone was over $4500. That's a whole lotta makeup for one pig!
Who knows? Maybe Palin can get the oil industry to reimburse the RNC for all that money. After all, she DID get all her fellow Alaskans a big ol' socialist check from them, in a real effort to "spread the wealth"!

Republican National Committee spent $150,000 to clothe and accessorize Palin since she was picked by McCain in late August. According to financial disclosure records, the bills include $75,063 at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis and $49,426 at Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York. The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August.
Politico also reported that its review of similar records for the campaign of Democrat Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee turned up no similar spending.

Palin has received the equivalent of $2,500 in clothes per day from places such as Saks Fifth Avenue (where RNC expenditures totaled nearly $50,000) and Neiman Marcus (where the governor had a $75,000 spree).

On a side note - has anyone noticed how limp the poor baby is ? He's like a rag doll. I know poor muscle tone in one of the symptoms of Down's syndrome (though technically, it's not a syndrome anymore), and some children are more affected than others - and the kid looks not long for this world.

I have a DD who was brain-damaged at birth.
I know some peeps with Downs who were in my DD's classes. Some are more affected than others. I heard that it has to do with how much genetic material is copied (whole chromosome or only portions). But the kid looks really really limp, so I'm guessing he's one of the more affected ones. Poor kid, I just feel sorry for him.

Trig Palin was born April 18 - that makes him roughly 6 months old. After being born (roughly 87% die in utero) the first year of life is the most dangerous for a Down's syndrome baby. The chances of dying in the first year depend on how many cardiac or GI tract abnormalities the child had, with heart problems the biggest concern. After the first year, lifespan is determined by 'coping skills' - ability to feed themselves and walk. Sadly, Trig appears to be in the 'severely affected' group.
Sorry to take the thread off-topic. It's just that his severe limpness was something I noticed after the VP debate, and it shows up quite clearly in the photo. Some were looking at Palin's dress and pants - I first looked at Trig.

Well said.
I note for the record that Trig is likely being extremely well cared for. Probably has constant monitoring by Secret Service and a Doctor on-call.
I further note that its fracking cold in Alaska...so wearing pants with a dress is probably good sense.

This is the party that wants to portray Obama as "elitist" and "a snob"? Seriously? $150K in ONE FREAKING MONTH on nothing but clothes, shoes, hair, and makeup.
It's a good thing we're not in any kind of financial crisis right now, or this could come across very badly...
Couldn't she have just said "Thanks, but no thanks..." on that shopping spree to nowhere? Oh, yah, sure, you betcha!
I hope she really loves those clothes, because she's going to be wearing them for a LONG, LONG TIME once she gets her ass sent back to Alaska.
And for the $150K, couldn't they have bought a few more votes, or at least hired one or two campaign workers? Or paid a lobbyist for a day or two?

You don't seem to have a problem with double-standards when it's your guys doing it. How much bitching did the right do about Edwards' haircut? At least he actually paid the campaign back for that expense.
But really, I could care less about this. If that's how the RNC wants to spend their money, that's between them, and their contributors.
I'm much more interested in the news that Palin was useing taxpayer money to pay for her children's trips.

Where's the double standard? I thought the issue w/ MyLittlePony Edwards was his " 2 America's " b.s. that he was spouting. Clearly, he was living in 1, and pretending to care about the other one. Only later on, did we come to find out that MyLittlePony really WAS living in 2 America's . His and the one of his mistress!

Folks out there sending $$ in to the GOP cause aren't doing so to have the PALIN FAMILY VACATION stay at 5 star suites while $$ for advertising dries up. That deserves an explanation, imo.

It might be worse than you think, too - apparently, several of those trips were paid for by the state of Alaska's taxpayers, not by the GOP - seems some of them were trips taken before she was picked for McCain's VP choice. One of the trips they mentioned in detail involved Palin going to New York City to attend a 5-hour conference. According to sources, she took her daughter Bristol with her on the taxpayers' dime, and stayed 5 days and 4 nights in a luxury hotel with Bristol, all for a 5-hour conference!

I heard a reasonable explanation about that house thing. You see, Cindy made John sign a pre-nup. Maybe John has one house (or maybe none), but Cindy has all the rest, and in her name only. Now which is more embarrassing to say:
1) I don't remember how many houses I have, or
2) I don't know how many my wife has, she didn't tell me.

Hmm, you don't see the double-standard where one politician is critisized over and over for an expensive haircut, and then the same people say it's no biggie when another politician spends more than most people make in a year on clothes?
Not terribly surprising.

The thing about Palin is, she's saved the state of Alaska far more than the 150,000 that the GOP paid for her clothes, so there's really no dobule standard here , what so ever.
MyLittlePony Edwards spoke of one world , yet lived in another. He never saved any tax payer's any $$. Sarah Palin did.
Not talking around the issue in the least. I just find it funny that the tiniest infraction, the smallest of nonsensical issues for Palin and it's blown up all over creation. Sadly, this is in response to the double standard as applied to men and women candidates. A man can show up in his everyday business attire, even if it's off the rack at Men's Wearhouse, and no one says a thing. If a woman candidate shows up the least bit out of style, her clothing choice somehow takes on political overtones.
Sen. Clinton didn't have a problem with this, since she's got plenty of money to spend on couture, and is located close to the right stores and fashion houses. Gov. Palin isn't rich, and probably hasn't had much time to shop the sales at Saks, being in Alaska and all, so the RNC decided to spend less money than it takes to show one political ad on national TV to get her up to speed, wardrobe-wise.
Big deal.

You're barely scraping the surface of Obama's negatives.
Tony Rezko, conviced felon slum lord, gave Obama his first job, gave him money for a house. From Rezko, Obama moved on to Bill Ayers, where together they spent $ 60 million dollars NOT on education, but radical "education" ala Ayers type education.
So Obama's first 2 jobs were with the sleaziest, slimiest, and most vile contemptable figures around. Obama, a Harvard brain, was either TOO FUCKING STUPID to know about these men, or he was TOO FUCKING AMBITIOUS to give a shit about their nefarious backgrounds. Either way, it tells everyone with a clear mind that Obama has NO character, and is just an opportunist of the most despicable kind.
Then there's ACORN. Obama trained their field people in the community, he provided legal services for them, and to this day he and his campaign gave them $800,000 to continue their voter fraud activities.
Rev Wright, Rev Flaeger, and the big Kahuna of racist hatred himself Farrakhan have all been friends and mentors of little Barack, call me Barry, Obama. He walked in the milliion man march with Farrakhan. Isn't that special.
Boy that Obama is quite a guy! Team him up with San Francisco Values lady Nancy Pelosi, and one can clearly see the end of America in sight. I pity you young people who really don't know any better. On the defensive over the extent of multiple McCain homes, the GOP candidate strikes back. But his TV spot gives an oversimplified and misleading account of how Obama bought his own $1.6 million house in Chicago.
The ad says Chicago power broker Tony Rezko got "political favors" including "$14 million from taxpayers." But there's no evidence of any connection to the Obama home purchase. The $14 million was to build apartments for low-income seniors. Obama wrote a letter supporting the "worthy" project, but both men say Rezko didn't ask for the letter.
It says Rezko "purchased part of the property [Obama] couldn't afford." Rezko's wife did buy an adjoining tract but later sold the land at a profit. Obama paid market price for his home.
McCain launched the attack after Obama ran one capitalizing on McCain's inability to recall for an interviewer how many homes the McCains own. Obama's ad says it's seven. The best tally we've seen puts the figure at eight, counting all the apartments and homes owned by McCain's wife, Cindy, and various family trusts, for themselves and their children.

Jong - may I call you Erica ?
Anyway, McCain was too stupid to know about WHO again ? Todd Palin, John Singlaub, the Contras (which he personally funded) and G. Gordon Liddy for example ?
And WOW - talk about sleeze - can you say Charles Keating ? Sure you can.
***************************************************************
The Contras:
They took out their knives and stuck them under his fingernails. After they took his fingernails off, then they broke his elbows. Afterwards they gouged out his eyes. Then they took their bayonets and made all sorts of slices in his skin all around his chest, arms, and legs. They then took his hair off and the skin of his scalp. When they saw there was nothing left to do with him, they threw gasoline on him and burned him. The next day they started the same thing with a 13 year old girl. They did more or less the same, but they did other things to her too. First, she was utilized, raped by all the officers. They stripped her and threw her in a small room, they went in one by one. Afterwards they took her out tied and blindfolded. Then they began the same mutilating, pulling her fingernails out and cutting off her fingers, breaking her arms, gouging out her eyes and all they did to the other fellow. They cut her legs and stuck an iron rod into her womb.
Rosa had her breasts cut off. Then they cut into her chest and took out her heart. The men had their arms broken and their testicles cut off and their eyes poked out. They were then killed by slitting their throats and pulling the tongue out through the slit.
I am in charge of a parish in the north of Nicaragua. My parishioners built a school, a health centre, a cultural centre. We have lived in peace. A few months ago a Contra force attacked the parish. They destroyed everything: the school, the health centre, the cultural centre. They raped nurses and teachers, slaughtered doctors, in the most brutal manner. They behaved like savages. Please demand that the US government withdraw its support from this shocking terrorist activity.

I've asked this before, and still never gotten an answer from any righty here.
why are you okay with voting Sarah Palin into the White House?
Does anybody truly believe she's qualified?
And if no, don't you give a fuck that she isn't?
....
if yes...
uh...
HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!
..........
also, can somebody give me examples of democratic candidates who were as completely lost as Dan Quayle, George W. and Sarah Palin?
We may have our gaffers, but those 3 are some serious dummies(in the sense of being underlearned and uninquisitive - I make no claims to their actual intelligence)
Is it just the GOP who can get away with this? Does this say something about the GOP voter base? or are there real examples of this on the democratic side of things that I just can't think of?

Erica,

You are an ignorant blob, in the ranks with Rap.
Here is the Wiki information you couldn't be bothered to look up:
... organization is generally referred to by the initials FSLN and its members are called, in both English and Spanish, Sandinistas. This term comes from the anti-imperialist struggle of Augusto César Sandino during the 1930s.
The FLSN overthrew the Somoza regime in 1979, establishing a revolutionary government in its place.[1][2] Following their seizure of power, the Sandinistas ruled Nicaragua for roughly 11 years from 1979 to 1990, first as part of a Junta of National Reconstruction. Following the resignation of centrist members from this Junta, the FSLN effectively took exclusive power in March 1981. In 1984 there were elections which were very widely observed and almost universally declared to be free and fair in which they won the majority of the votes.
Upon assuming power, the FSLNs political platform included the following, nationalization of property owned by the Somozas and their collaborators; land reform; improved rural and urban working conditions; free unionization for all workers, both urban and rural; price fixing for commodities of basic necessity; improved public services, housing conditions, education; abolition of torture, political assassination and the death penalty; protection of democratic liberties; Equality for women; non-aligned foreign policy; formation of a 'popular army' under the leadership of the FSLN and Humberto Ortega.

I was all ready to pounce on Sarah Palin's latest dealings with the McCain Maverick Party's rendition of "My Fair Lady" (By George, I think she's got it), BTW what are Soccer Moms wearing these days?
But, alas, I thought to myself What's the Big Deal? What self-respecting VP candidate, with a million dollar bod, would turn down a chance to look like - well, a million bucks? (For a brief moment I thought of using Hil as an example, but then I said "Nah" it's just not the same).

So here we have Sarah Palin, the self-professed "Joe Six-Pack hockey mom, who's skrimpin' and strugglin' to pay the bills, don'tcha know", and who's trying to persuade us all that she's just an average mom and a small-town populist with "real American" values. Meanwhile, she's strutting around with a hundred and fifty large worth of designer clothes and nearly $5k just in hair and makeup.
Does anything seem out of place in this picture? Does this sound like your average housewife and mom? Isn't this the kind of hypocrisy that got John Edwards in trouble with his populist rhetoric and $400 haircuts? (We're talking BEFORE his sleazy affairs were revealed and confirmed)
Doesn't Palin come across as an elitist? A snob? Over eighteen grand a WEEK on clothes? Who the hell does she think she is? A CELEBRITY?! Paris Hilton?
Will she have a sex-tape coming out soon?
Of course, realistically, the issue that's much more important in the real scheme of things is her lying on her expense reports and bilking the people of Alaska out of over twenty grand - but the GOP would be just as happy to focus on her clothes-horse status and NOT have to address the REAL issues, right?
It says something about her character, is what I'm saying...

What's the big deal with the clothes? Tracey Schmitt, spokesman for the McCain/Palin campaign, says the clothes will be donated after the campaign. The info is out there if you look around a little. Big deal...
What's the problem with either party doing everything possible to present their candidates in the best possible light?
Would it be better if she campaigned in sweats & a hairnet? Would the media give her a break then?
Where do the Dems get their clothes? I see Palin getting slammed, but I see no mention of how that compares directly to the Dem ticket.
How about staying focused on the issues, mmmk?

I believe he's said repeatedly that he'd let them expire. I don't get how that qualifies as "raising taxes on all of us", though; these are the tax cuts that Bush gave to the top 5% - those who net over $250,000 per year. Hardly "all of us". The vast majority of "all of us" - some 95% - would either see no increase (those at the very bottom) or an actual tax DECREASE under Obama's plan.
It should also be noted that McCain voted AGAINST the Bush tax cuts, saying that they were unnecessary. So he was against them before he was for them. Just another of his many flip-flops. I'd bet cashy money that McCain would let them expire, too.

I dunno - at the time, I was grossing exactly 52K a year, and my taxes went down under Bush's tax plan (I netted a little more each pay period - I took a look at my pay stubs...yeah, jeeze, I save them! *shrug*). I also recall getting a check from the gov.
So, it looks like my taxes will go back up if either candidate lets the plan expire, if you are correct about Senator McCain, Kwicko. yuk
Here's the thing I don't get about raising taxes on folks that earn over 250K...how does raising taxes on my boss (Big Bucks!) make things better for the nation? If the gov takes more of his money, he is going to look for way to get that money back somehow - he is used to getting $XXXXXX every month from his business. If his taxes go up, he will just give himself a raise to compensate for the increased taxes. That money has to come from someplace. If his business earnings stay the same, he has to cut business cost's someplace, right? I know he would resist cutting staff, but he would cut other expenses around the shop. He might alter our 401k plan, or our health benefits. Hell, today I asked for cash to replace some flourescent light bulbs that are out. I got turned down! ("Let's see how business is on Friday"). If cutting back on little things like that don't get him back to where he was pre-tax increase, he will - reluctantly - start to cut staff.
Seems to me that that scenario would put a strain on the gov ... if more folks lose their jobs or even if they just have their benefits cut.
I am no economist, so I don't know if I am missing something here, but raising taxes on the nation's job creators isn't really making sense to me.
I don't have much faith in a government run health care system, either. I have first hand experience with gov-run medical programs (Carter & Reagan VA) ... not attractive.
Time to dig around a little more on each campaign's respective site...
I really thought I had my mind made up....

Is it right that they spend this sort of money on looking good on camera, while talking about the struggles of average people? Obviously, it is a kind of hypocrisy, and obviously the money could be better spent. But everyone does it because they have to be like a celebrity to get people's attention, it seems. Great hair, great face, great clothes, memorable buzz words.
But that's a problem much bigger than one person or one election season. So why pretend it isn't and pick on just one person?

As is well known, I shake the towers of peoples faith to see what they're made of, and I think perhaps you should consider some renovations, all else aside.
So go on, take your ball and go home, it's not like I'd miss you, but I do spit a general curse in your direction for being one less available person NOT blinded by Obama's pretty little shine and thus more likely to drop the bomb on his inevitable abuses of power.
Wimp.
EDIT: And worse, you didn't even have the guts to let the post stand, you snivelling coward, but I cached a copy just to beat you over the head with when you inevitably break your word, just like all your GOP idols do.

On a lighter note, I got no issue with little Piper carryin one of mommys Louis Vuitton bags, she didn't get to pick who mommy was, and it's not like she was the one who bought it anyhow.
Yeah yeah yeah, I got a soft spot for kids, I know, but one thing I never do is blame em for who their parents are - not that I think that's what was meant, just sayin, if she wants to carry one of mommys bags, more power to her.
My niece has her mothers unfortunate tendancy to damage hers by whapping overly "friendly" boys with em - so I bought her one made by dickies, the same folk who make my damn near indestructible work pants, and sewed a pouch of number nine shot into it covered by a false bottom to give it a little more "authority".
Seems the boys have learned to keep their hands to themselves, as of late, gee I wonder why ?

In other fashion news...
Looks like Sen. Obama's suits are tailored for him by Hart, Schaffner and Marx. He's bought at least five. They're so popular that HartMarx has begun selling off-the-rack copies for $1,500.00 a pop, so you'd expect that the tailored ones cost more. No info yet on shirts, ties, shoes and accessories.

Michelle Obama also likes style, wearing couture by such well-known designers as Maria Pinto and Isabel Toledo.
What does any of this, or Gov. Palin's clothes, have to do with politics or the election, you ask?
NOTHING!!!

David Frum can hardly be described as a liberal. Here's what he had to say:

The median monthly mortgage payment in the US in 2007 was about $1500. In other words, Sarah Palin spent very nearly as much on clothing in a single month as the typical American family will spend on housing over the next ten years.

During a time of economic woe, the DNC spends $150 million plus of donors hard-earned money on political ads - which have debatable effect, and can't even be auctioned off later. Think of the good that could be done if just 10%, even 5%, of that money were used to alleviate poverty, help prevent foreclosures, pay fuel bills for those who can't afford it. Why would anyone vote for such heartless, win-at-all-costs, bastards?
See I can make up shit just as silly, and as void of real content, as yours.
Sorry, but Gov. Palin's wardrobe has nothing to do with how the RNC or the Republican Party works, except in the minds of those who would criticize them if they gave away free bread. All the whining and finger-pointing just makes you look like spiteful children.

You know, that would NOT be a bad campaign move, especially with decent press coverage - sure it'd come off as a little self serving, but that's what spin is for, yes ?
I do think Miss P's wardrobe's a bit excessive, but that kinda goes for all of em, when it comes to it - still, discussing fiscal responsibility in a suit that costs more than I make in three months annoys the piss outta me no matter who does it.

dude, free bread...where, where..??
Ok, so it's much ado about nothing... right? well maybe, but then I saw this....

If Palin's $150,000 shopping spree had Republicans disgusted, then the report that her makeup stylist cost $22,800 for the first two weeks of October should have them livid. The stylist, Amy Strozzi, was apparently paid more than any other McCain staffer during that period.

that probably warrants investigation for validity, but if it is true, (and that money won't be given back - don't think you can donate the whole face, ya know)... it would seem that the money could have been put to better use - i mean, the folks that fell for Palin would probably like her with or without makeup...
just to repeat - the makeup person was paid MORE than any McCain staffer for two weeks in Oct..... that is just incredible to me.

Makes ME wonder who's really running for office. What's his name, or Palin.
BTW - women are smarter than men about Palin.
A whopping 60% of women aged 50 and younger have a negative view of Mrs Palin, according to a poll released by the Pew Research Centre on October 21st. Mrs Palin has also had only a fleeting impact on white women. After the Republican convention white women favoured Mr McCain over Mr Obama by 51% to 40%, according to Gallup. They now favour Mr Obama by 47% to 46%.

Typical of the breed, actually - at least Hero has a sense of humor, Geeze and Anthony can be reasonable and logical even under fire, Rap and Finn have staying power, and Kirk sensibly brings stuff to the table worth arguing about.

Quote:The difference is, when people donate money to a campaign, they know that political ads for millions of $$$ will be part of that campaign (regardless of how effective they may or my not be). They don't donate their cash so that one of the candidates can go on a shopping spree that a 16-year-old Valley girl with a credit card and no credit limit would be ashamed of.

Maybe you could tell me how this can be reconciled with McCain's position on this issue back in 1993/1994. I linked it earlier, here it is again:
