Political campaigns don't always showcase the best America has to offer... someone who seems like a decent person can turn vicious at the blink (or wink) of an eye..
The negative ads and falsehoods are one thing, but to actively incite violence against your opponent is very wrong and should be denounced by anyone who still believes in the fundamental principals of this country.
At a recent event in Florida, Palin worked the crowd into a hateful and violent mob....

One of the things I hear all the time around here is that if Sen.Obama were to become president, he would eventually be assassinated. The first few times I heard that, I just wrote it off as paranoid rednecks reaction to a Democrat - of course most of us know better than that.
Some people have genuine a hatred for things or people they don't understand, and to be honest, there are plenty of places in this country where the light of compassion and understanding will never reach.
Yet to hear someone yell "Kill him" at a public rally and the speaker wink and let it go without condemnation is sad.

AURaptor, I try not to get mixed up in your dramas on this site, but did you see any of the video, hear the "Kill him!" in question? It wasn't the "Our team is red hot, your team ain't doodly squat" rah-rah exclamation that you pretend it was. Palin was talking about Obama "paling around with terrorists." She is saying that Obama is--in the cold war lingo this kind of demonizing suggests--a fellow traveller with terrorists. Obama is an enemy combatant in league with terrorists. Of course the man in the crowd shouted "Kill him!" Because that's what treasonous, terrorist supporters deserve, right? It's not a euphemism, man--it's the real deal.

Riling up a mob to the point of threatening the candidates and the press, that belongs to the school of fascism. We had a whole number of threads four years ago about dehumanization. I do wonder, though, I really do - when he gets caught with something really really stupid (95% of Americans don't pay taxes) or accidentally lets slip what he really thinks (95% of 'them' doesn't pay taxes) - what goes on in his head afterwards ? Hell, I'm just so thrilled (and a bit terrified) to learn that I'm officially one of the richest five percent of Americans, since I paid taxes last year, and only five percent of us do that. Scares the shit out of me, though; I mean, I don't have a car payment or a credit card payment, I have no outstanding loans and live in a small house that I pay $650 a month to rent, and there's very little money left over to invest.

One of the things that I've learned is that we have a surprising number of delusional people in our society. I can no longer find the link, but I read a recent report that said that delusional people and normal people process conflicting information differently.
When it comes to conflicting information regarding a specific delusion, delusional people don't weigh the information and reject the less likely data, they LOOK FOR mechanisms to DEFEND their belief, and when they create one (no matter how bizarre) they create a shot of dopamine. Dopamine, you may recall, is the "reward" chemical that stimulates learning, but is also involved in addiction and schizophrenia. So, some of the ppl on the board are either addicted to their delusions or they're shading into psychosis. Either way, their beliefs are quite geniune.

So, are you saying that 30% of people are making less than $5,350 per year ? Because you have to be making less than $5,350 per year to pay no income tax. This is from the tax tables (single): 10% on income between $0 and $8,025. Now assuming you get the standard deduction ($5,350) it translates to 10% tax on income between $5,350 and $13,375 per year.

Voter registration fraud reported, report analyzes Missouri's election progress

JEFFERSON CITY -- "There are so many people that are so excited to register," said Polly Edelstein with the Stephens College Democrats.
Edelstein was one of many volunteers trying to recruit new registered voters by Wednesday's deadline. So far this year, Republicans and Democrats have registered more than 220,000 new Missouri voters.
But former Republican Sen. Jack Danforth says a number of those new voters might not be legit.
"There was a recent case in Jackson County Missouri," Danforth said by phone. "Where the same person was registered 10 times under 10 different addresses, different social security numbers."
Danforth points the finger at ACORN, a housing advocacy group that's held massive voter registration drives.
Much like eight years ago, allegations of voter registration fraud have already begun to surface. Kansas City election officials report receiving hundreds of questionable or fraudulent voter cards - most sent in by ACORN.
The Secretary of State's office says they are working with Kansas City election officials, and working to clean up voter rolls.
Breaking News: A.C.O.R.N. Office in Nevada Raided

The A.P. is reporting that A.C.O.R.N.’s headquarters in Las Vegas, Nevada has been raided by Nevada state authorities. A.C.O.R.N is an organization that works to get low-income people to vote. They have been investigated in the past for engaging in voter fraud, including registering dead voters. State spokesman Bob Walsh stated that ACORN is being investigated for submitting multiple voter registrations with false and duplicate names.
Barack Obama, during his days as a “community organizer” worked with A.C.O.R.N. and still has links to the organization. Beth Shaw first reported on Obama’s deep links to A.C.O.R.N. here.
We’ll have to see what’s uncovered by this investigation, and if it leads to Obama’s campaign.
UPDATE: A.C.O.R.N. registered the Dallas Cowboys starting lineup in Clark County as voters, according to Secretary of State Ross Miller

Um... they're investigating. Haven't charged anyone yet.
Look, I know how voter registration goes: Somebody stands at the store of the supermarket and has you fill out a form. Or they set up a table at a neighborhood community center. Those taking the forms have no way of knowing if one person has gone to five different locations, or of verifying the background information, unless that applicant is personally known by the recruiter and literally stands in front of them filling out multiple forms. In cases where that happened, the recruiter should go to jail.
AFA the Dallas Cowboys, or whomever... I don't follow sports. I wouldn't recognize a face or name from pretty much ANY sport except maybe Kobe Bryant and Roger Federer. If I were a recruiter I'd accept the forms out of sheer ignorance.
So I'm glad they're investigating. If the system is being abused it should stop and people should be charged. But that includes the egregious purging of the voter rolls in Florida by Katherine Harris, who managed to kick 19000 people off the rolls, the vast majority of whom should have remained. And Katherine Harris was told IN WRITING by the software programmer that her criteria were far too loose, and WOULD result in a number of eligible people being kicked off. To which she replied: Kick 'em off anyway.
It should be one person, one vote. ANYONE gaming the system should be prosecuted.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Officials in Missouri, a hard-fought jewel in the presidential race, are sifting through possibly hundreds of questionable or duplicate voter-registration forms submitted by an advocacy group that has been accused of election fraud in other states.
Charlene Davis, co-director of the election board in Jackson County, where Kansas City is, said the fraudulent registration forms came from the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN. She said they were bogging down work Wednesday, the final day Missourians could register to vote.
"I don't even know the entire scope of it because registrations are coming in so heavy," Davis said. "We have identified about 100 duplicates, and probably 280 addresses (since Rap doesn't do well with math, I think I need to point out that it's 380 total) that don't exist, people who have driver's license numbers that won't verify or Social Security numbers that won't verify. Some have no address at all."
The nonpartisan group works to recruit low-income voters, who tend to lean Democratic. Polls show Republican presidential candidate John McCain with an edge in bellwether Missouri, but Democrat Barack Obama continues to put up a strong fight.
Jess Ordower, Midwest director of ACORN, said his group hasn't done any registrations in Kansas City since late August. He said he was told three weeks ago by election officials that there were only about 135 questionable cards — 85 of them duplicates.
"They keep telling different people different things," he said. "They gave us a list of 130, then told someone else it was 1,000."
FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said the agency has been in contact with elections officials about potential voter fraud and plans to investigate.
"It's a matter we take very seriously," Patton said. "It is against the law to register someone to vote who does not fall within the parameters to vote, or to put someone on there falsely."
On Tuesday, authorities in Nevada seized records from ACORN after finding fraudulent registration forms that included the starting lineup of the Dallas Cowboys.
In April, eight ACORN workers in St. Louis city and county pleaded guilty to federal election fraud for submitting false registration cards for the 2006 election. U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway said they submitted cards with false addresses and names, and forged signatures.
Ordower said Wednesday that ACORN registered about 53,500 people in Missouri this year (again, since Rap can't so math, I feel the need to point out that the potentially 'problematic' registrations are 0.7% of all ACORN registrations. But see two posts down that existing registrations have a 28.5% eror rate). He believes his group is being targeted because some politicians don't want that many low-income people having a voice.
"It's par for the course," he said. "When you're doing more registrations than anyone else in the country, some don't want low-income people being empowered to vote. There are pretty targeted attacks on us, but we're proud to be out there doing the patriotic thing getting people registered to vote."
Republicans are among ACORN's loudest critics. At a campaign stop in Bethlehem, Pa., supporters of John McCain interrupted his remarks Wednesday by shouting, "No more ACORN."
According to its national Web site, the group has registered 1.3 million people nationwide for the Nov. 4 election. It also has encountered complaints of fraud stemming from registration efforts in Wisconsin, New Mexico, Nevada and battleground states like Michigan, Ohio and North Carolina, where new voter registrations have favored Democrats nearly 4 to 1 since the beginning of this year.
Missouri offers 11 electoral votes; the presidential candidates need at least 270 to win the election.

Are statewide voter databases potentially a bigger threat to voting integrity than DREs? It probably depends on who is running them.
Wired has posted an article on the statewide voter databases required by the 2002 Help America Vote Act.
Electronic voting machines have been the focus of much controversy the last few years. But another election technology has received little scrutiny yet could create numerous problems and disenfranchise thousands of voters in November, election experts say.
Government databases are always going to present a certain level of error. The problem we can address is how states decide to deal with those errors. In states where election officials have an interest in suppressing the vote, errors will likely mean disenfranchisement.
The Wired article goes on to explain:
The law requires each voter to have a unique identifier. Since 2004, new registration applicants have had to provide a driver's license number or the last four digits of a Social Security number to register (voters who don't have them are assigned a unique number by the state). States are required to try to authenticate the numbers with motor vehicle records and the Social Security Administration database.
But databases are prone to errors such as misspellings and transposed numbers, and applicants are prone to make mistakes or write illegibly on applications. The Social Security Administration has acknowledged that matches between its database and voter-registration records have yielded a 28.5 percent error rate.
What does this mean state by state?
States vary in how they treat applicants whose records don't match, and experts say rules in some states could prevent thousands of eligible voters from casting ballots or having their votes counted in November. Those who don't match in Oregon, for example, can cast a ballot, but their vote for president or any other federal race on a ballot won't be counted. There are currently about 9,500 voters in Oregon who fall into this category, but a state spokesman says matching issues will be resolved with most of them before November so they can vote in federal races. Fewer than 500 voters were affected by this during the state's primary.
Oregon's Secretary of State, Bill Bradbury, is a Democrat. Kate Brown, a progressive Democrat is running for his seat. The Secretary of State Project is supporting her campaign.
In Colorado, a state where our candidate Ken Gordon lost by a handful of votes amidst widespread voting problems in Boulder and Denver Counties, Republican Secretary of State Mike Coffman is in charge of the database. How's that project going?
Colorado -- a crucial swing state -- completed its $13 million database this year after firing Accenture in 2005. A little-known Oregon company named Saber, which has created databases for 11 states, replaced it. Accenture retained its contract in Pennsylvania, though problems occurred there as well. In 2005, one state official called the $20 million system "seriously if not fatally flawed."
And in Florida? Where the Secretary of State is a Republican appointed by the governor, not elected:
Last week Florida, a battleground state, announced a new policy that voting groups say will likely disenfranchise numerous voters. A state law passed in 2005 initially prohibited applicants whose records didn't match from either being registered or voting. But after some 13,000 voters were blocked for bad matches in 2006, and more were blocked in 2007, the state was sued by several groups, forcing it to change its plan.
Beginning Sept. 8, new registration applicants who fail a HAVA match must mail a copy or bring a hard copy of their ID to an election office before Nov. 4 to show that the ID number on their registration application is correct. And of course there was massive Republican e-vote fraud in Ohio in 2004. So much so that citizens have filed a civil suit against Ken Blackwell (the man who will be responsible for counting his own votes this coming election).
We need clean elections, that is clear. Let's start with the companies that filter the entire voter registration roll, the S'cy of States that certify the voting machines, the companies that register and tally the votes. The possibility of mischief at THAT level is far greater than from any citizen's group.

March 1, 2002 — In November the U.S. media, lost in patriotic reverie, dressed up the Florida recount as a victory for President Bush. But however one reads the ballots, Bush's win would certainly have been jeopardized had not some Floridians been barred from casting ballots at all. Between May 1999 and Election Day 2000, two Florida secretaries of state — Sandra Mortham and Katherine Harris, both protegees of Governor Jeb Bush — ordered 57,700 "ex-felons," who are prohibited from voting by state law, to be removed from voter rolls. ... Two of these "scrub lists," as officials called them, were distributed to counties in the months before the election with orders to remove the voters named. Together the lists comprised nearly 1 percent of Florida's electorate and nearly 3 percent of its African-American voters. Most of the voters (such as "David Butler," a name that appears 77 times in Florida phone books) were selected because their name, gender, birthdate, and race matched — or nearly matched — one of the tens of millions of ex-felons in the United States. Neither DBT nor the state conducted any further research to verify the matches. DBT, which frequently is hired by the F.B.I. to conduct manhunts, originally proposed using address histories and financial records to confirm the names, but the state declined the cross-checks. In Harris's elections-office files, next to DBT's sophisticated verification plan, there is a handwritten note: "DOn't NEED."

Were it not for Dem attempts to sign up dead folks, folks from other states, and multiple voters w/ the same name, there'd be fewer cases to go over and mistakes like these could be corrected in a far more efficient fashion. But no, Dem friendly groups like ACORN are only stepping up their fraud, being investigated in half a dozen states right now, but we all know that'll yield nothing. Too many cases for too few investigators to properly vet, in too short a time. Dems know their dirty business VERY well, they've been pros at it since at least 1960.

Only if they really ARE ex-felons, and only in 15 states. The problem with how things were done in Florida is that if people shared a last name and first initial with a felon (and sometimes just a last name) they were ALL purged. It didn't matter if the sex was different, the birth date, the middle initial, the address ... simple things that would have been caught in a cross check if it were done ...
C'mon. Why are you making so many silly excuses for the repubicans in the face of FACTS that are so easily verified ?
