US Soldiers were ordered to bomb 700 Kuwaiti oil wells with C4 and to keep firefighters from extinguishing the fires, to drive up oil profits, with smoke killing US soldiers:

A government that masscred 2.6-million Iraqi allies would never hijack oil prices?

Why would the News Sentinel last Friday as their top of the fold headline story orchestrate the gas fear buying? Why would the News Sentinel bury the stories of North Carolina and Florida Attorney Generals investigating Pilot for price gouging? Could it be because Pilot buys 50,000 newspapers on Friday to give away for free every week?
Could it be that when Pilot/Weigel's saw that the News Sentinel was increasing its rack price 50% from 50 cents to 75 cents on Monday that Pilot/Weigel's assumed they could increase the price of gasoline per gallon like the News Sentinel and no one would notice?

Curioser and curiouser...
Found this old bit , that makes lots of sense :
http://www.itsyourtimes.com/?q=node/3592
" 'Supply and Demand' economics are 'out the window' thanks to the tremendous manipulation of the gasoline market by the Oil Oligopolies. Example: Four weeks ago it was reported by expert commodities brokers that gasoline stocks were increasing due to a modest slowdown of gasoline purchases. The increase was 2 million barrels of gasoline. So ALL of the Oil refineries cut back production by, you guessed it, 2 million barrels. THAT MEANS, EVEN IF YOU CONSERVE GASOLINE, THE OIL OLIGOPOLIES WILL RAISE THE PRICE TO CONTINUE FEEDING GREED PROFITS DAILY BY REDUCING OUTPUT. Refinery output is at approximately 80% of capacity.
A week or so ago, an oil tanker was seized by pirates and crude oil AND gasoline prices went up because of it according to CNBC. HOWEVER, Brazil has had a HUGE oil discovery off its coast last week of up to 33 BILLION barrels of oil. That is about 1/5 the size of the known oil reserves in the world. Brazil has also discovered another oil field PREVIOUSLY to the latest find that contains 8 billion barrels of oil.
Now, if ONE OIL TANKER can cause the price to go up, why would the discovery of 33 billion barrels of oil NOT cause the price of crude to decrease by 1/5? Because the MARKET IS FIXED AND YOU ARE GETTING SCREWED. "

Why would they do that? I mean supply unusually low and demand really high...if only there existed some form of theory to explain the mysteries of economics and the mystical River of Commerce.
Let me do it:
'When demand exceeds supply, prices will go up.'
Somebody write that down...I think I just won me a Nobel...and to think, I learned everything I need to know about economics from 'A Beutiful Mind', great movie...guy likes math, marries hot woman, goes crazy, and dies in the arena after solving all the world's economic needs and sinking a French frigate.
I note for the record that raising their prices also has the effect of curbing demand allowing market equilibrium to be restored thus resulting in a stablized suppy-demand-price relationship. So in effect the raising of prices is a natural self correction by local market forces. There's another Nobel...I'm gonna need to clear off my shelf (and they have not even seen my poetry, Middle East peace plan, the HIV vaccine I discovered while eating Chocolate Cheerios, and that particle accelorater I built in my basement from my old train set).

It's called razcketeering and organized crime by the TN Attorney General. But you wouldn't know anything about that.

Pilot Oil under investigation for gas gouging
According to Florida law, price gouging on essentials such as gas is prohibited during a declared state of emergency. The state of emergency for Hurricane Ike was issued by Gov. Crist on September 5.
Also under Tennessee law, the state does not have to be in a state of emergency for price gouging to be illegal here. For example, although Hurricane Ike hit Texas, Knoxville gas stations caught price gouging will be fined $1,000 per violation.
Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen has also addressed the issue of price-gouging, saying he will work with the state attorney general's office to aggressively pursue anyone who violates the law.
Price gouging is illegal in Tennessee. If you want to report a possible violation, contact the Tennessee Division of Consumer Affairs at (615) 741-4737 or file a report online.

That billionaire criminal Republicon mayor is now running for governor, and he still refuses to put his gas company shares into a blind trust. Too bad The Law is only enforced against political enemies who campaign against you.

Attorney General Settles With Pilot, Will Sue Weigel's for Price Gouging
The state has announced a settlement with 27 gas stations in East and Middle Tennessee, including 3 Knoxville Pilot stations, for price gouging in the wake of Hurricane Ike last September.
Also, according to the press release, the state has filed suit against Knoxville gas retailer Weigel's for alleged gouging violations at seven stores.
Here are the three Knoxville Pilot stations that are subject to the settlement, and, thus, may be forced to give some consumers refunds:
(1) 410 Merchant Dr., Knoxville, TN 37912; (2) 2218 Cumberland Ave., Knoxville, TN 37916; (3) 314 Lovell Rd., Knoxville, TN 37922
For complete details and the full release, go here.
Update: It seems that Tennessee Democratic Party chair Chip Forrester remembers that handsome Knoxville mayor and Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Haslam is also the son of Pilot founder "Big" Jim Haslam, and a former Pilot exec himself.
From the press release by the Demorat Party:
Quote:
TNDP praises Attorney General for protecting consumers from profiteering oil companies like Haslam's Pilot Corp.
Today, Tennessee Attorney General Bob Cooper helped consumers strike back against corporate greed. The Attorney General won a settlement against dozens of gas stations who inflated their prices in the wake of Hurricane Ike. According to the attorney general's press release, the settlement includes $73,447 in potential restitution for consumers who were ripped off at the pump.
The Tennessee Democratic Party has helped bring attention to the price gouging by Pilot Corp. and other gas stations in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike in September 2008. Pilot Corp. was caught marking up prices at three gas stations in Knoxville and one in Powell.
...
Bill Haslam is the former vice-president of Pilot Corporation, a petroleum corporation founded by his father Jim Haslam and headquarted in Knoxville. Haslam is currently the mayor of Knoxville and also a Republican candidate for Governor.
"In 2010, we will need a Governor who will look out for the Tennesseans who are struggling to keep their jobs and provide for their families," Forrester said. "I just hope that Bill Haslam doesn't treat the voters of Tennessee like his family's company treated drivers in Powell."

Not news out here; we've gone through all of those except hurricanes, and long since just accepted it's the way it is. I'm just waiting to see how freaked out people will be when we run out of oil...
I know deniers say "that's a long ways off", but that doesn't change that it will happen, and all this price gouging, cartels and being pissed off won't mean shit. To "your" children or your children's children's children...
If anyone cared, THAT might be something to do something about; not gonna change things about the greed of the oil companies, OPEC or the governments any time soon....
