I've seen almost all of season two remastered now (The new FX are astounding), and most of it with my son, who's nine.
He said to me, "Dad, this show is even better than the Next Generation, why didn't they spend more money on the original effects?"

Yeah, as such "improvements" go, the re-touching actually IS an improvement...hardly sacrilegious at all! Of special note so far to me has been the techno-whatever displayed above Norman's navel ("I, Mudd") and the title entity of "The Doomsday Machine" (and the weird thing is that I kinda sorta prefer the old DdM...)

It was like a whole new original Star Trek when we got here!

Did you buy the DVDs or iTunes or other? I have only seen a few eps on iTunes/iPhone - agree with ya, great "print" as they say, luscious even.

Yeah, unlike the first season HD/DVD hybrid set, the second plain DVD season was much more reasonable...wow, watchin' 'em over twice now & stll groovin' to the seamlessness of the new FX! The blue glow on the hull during some of the phaser fire shots is luciousness itself!
And of course, the untouched live action that I always loved...

Those are pretty pretty.

I took my son (8 at the time) to see the remastered episode "The Cage" on the big screen, no less. Beautiful. Unfortunately, my son was thoroughly disturbed by Captain Pike in the wheelchair and we had to leave.

I still haven't seen the pictures posted, but I remember as a little boy in the 1970s thinking the Enterprise was such a cool looking ship, but now I think back on it and after seeing the series Enterprise I wonder how would they explain a sleek looking ship like Captain Archer's Enterprise and then reqressing to that of the NCC1701? I have not yet seen the episodes where the later model ships appear so if the answer is there please don't tell me.

Archer's Enterprise was tiny. Barely bigger than the 1701's saucer section, and little more than a spacegoing submarine --more akin to the Defiant-class, actually.

Also, don't underestimate the importance of style --form may follow function, but Starfleet has always been careful to design their ships for an aesthetic goal as well as a purely functional one (they want their ships to be readily identifiable to any other races).
