For many years I've heard John Edwards talk about the 2 Americas; I always thought he was refering to those that can afford $400 haircuts and live in 30-room mansions--vs.-- those of us that can't.

Now he's added a new element to the equation...those that can afford $400 haircuts, live in a 30-room mansion, AND ALSO afford a mistress and a love child; or is it more appropriate to view the absurd hypocricy as those that are faithful to their wives and family for political appearances, versus those that do it out of love and morality.

sure,

the 400 dollar hair-cut was excessive and a waste of money.

stupid to try to paint that as some sort of hypocricy though. We all blow wads of money on luxuries, though at obviously different scales.

Maybe the man appreciates a haircut more than I do. My sister paid a 1000 dollars for 2 nsync tickets years ago, and she's far far far, from wealthy.

I don't expect politicians who are looking to usher in change for society as a whole, for the betterment of it, presumably, to live like monks. They are people...jesus.

I would be interested in what percentage of his wealth he does put into charities or programs. That seems like a more valid way to judge people, rather than trying to malign them for what they do with the money they keep.

.............

As to the affair, I googled but have found no "credible" news source running this story.

The media must be refusing to cover it, because its about a "liberal" like the way they refused to touch the Lewinski story...that was like pulling teeth, wasn't it? wasn't it?

Yeah, media hates those sex scandals when they target dems.

My question is, is there a better source than the enquirer on this?

Just for the record, exactly how much money does the American taxpayer lay out for Dubya to get his hair cut? I mean, if $400 is an excessive amount for John Edwards to pay of his own money, how much is too much when it's on OUR DIME?

Just wondering.

How Rue-ish of you. Don't like the message, attack the messengers. Sorry that Brylcreme Boy turned out to be just another political charlatan, adding to a long and distinguished list of Democratic false prophets. I guess as long as there are lazy pothead miscreants and clueless, naive idiots who need to have a "cause" and follow a "leader", there will always be the Kennedys, Gores, and Edwards' all too eager to fill their pathetic voids (for a profit, of course).

Well you're 100% right...except that "We" who "blow all wads of money" don't rally poor people at political events and pontificate endlessly about greedy evil American corporations being the source of their misery. His class-warfare strategy eventually blew up in his professionally coiffed face, because even a hillbilly sharecropper can see through the absurdities he spouts; yet he still runs around like some kind of champion for poor people.

So tell me, o sage guru - how exactly would that scenario make the Democrats ANY different than the Republicans?

Are you just pissed because you've discovered that with all his faults and failings, Edwards could just as well have been a Republican?

I think it's ridiculous for ANYONE to spend $400 on a haircut - but I can guarantee you that John Edwards isn't the only one in politics doing it. If that's your biggest issue with the guy, he must be doing something right. Let's start with him NOT being a genocidal mass-murdering piece of human scum like your current false prophet (for profit, of course) George W. Bush. Four hundred bucks for a haircut, or four thousand American soldiers dead so Bush can fake himself into looking like a "war President"... Gosh, that's a tough choice.

I'm not a fan of Edwards; never was. There was never any danger that he'd get the nomination, or that I'd vote for him if he did (unlike you on the right, who just six months ago were RAILING against "that goddamned LIBERAL John McCain"). But if this is the biggest issue you've got, you're truly grasping at straws.

Let's see.. A *FORMER* Democratic US Senator is claimed (by no less an authoritative source than the National Enquirer, mind you) to be having an affair... On the flipside, we have the senior Republican US Senator indicted on multiple counts of obstruction and bribery. Yeah, I can definitely see where you'd think one of them points up his party's general lack of a moral compass... Makes perfect sense now. Issues between a man and his wife - private issues - are SOOOO much more important to the nation than petty little things like graft, greed, and the rampant corruption that the GOP has endorsed for the past hundred or so years.

Even though you agree with my assessment of Edwards you still must throw in one of your inane little hate-Bush tirades. Why? Why all the anger? I go after all of them! I mock McCain when I feel it's deserved, and I go after Obama as well. I've been harder on Repubs than Dems for a while now. Most folks here, like you, don't like my style; they want Wiki quotes & obscure references from agenda-driven ideologues. Sorry, you won't get that from me; you just get my take on things as I percieve them. And I'm not perfect, and when I'm corrected on something I admit my mistake right here too. You might want to direct some of your anti-Republican hatred against your own precious Democrats. The idiot Bush has sure run circles around the hapless Reid & Pelosi, hasn't he? Got his war monies, Fisa, etc etc etc. I'm sure you must be just livid at the ineffectiveness they've shown in doing anything they claimed they would when they took control of Congress. Their 9% approval ratings make Bush look like Miley Cyrus in terms of popularity. Not to worry, Bush & Cheney will be gone very soon. Maybe s

Well I don't agree with your point Jong,

and you ignored the key point of my comment, that is that it is not so important what he does with the money he keeps...he may really like his hair, that may be really strange to me, blah blah blah,

what's important is what he does with his time and what he does donate to good causes, charities, trusts, organizations, etc...

I'll repeat, since you ignored. He's an american not a monk, and I don't expect everybody who may have a better message for this country to have to be Ghandi.

He freely and often says that he has benefited from the promise of America. I don't think it has ever been his message that people should not enjoy luxuries while others are starving, just that we should work to d something about it.

You set the bar ridiculously high when anybody that wants to change the direction of this country has to be a Bhudda.

That's unfair, and there's nothing hyppocritical in not living up to stantards Edwards never claimed to meet.

Does it really make republicans better for all their decadence that they at least don't want to bring up any body else? Is that somehow a better way to be?

That's cool. You know I'm not looking to ever really start anything to upset anyone. I just like to have some fun once in a while rufflin' a few feathers, but not in a mean-spirited or trollish way. I know that my posts get read, but I usually don't expect or get responses. I rarely engage hard-core ideologues because there's simply no point. I could never have the time & resources that you, Rue & others put into your fact-researched posts. Despite some differences of opinions most here are civil and intelligent. I've learned a lot of things here over the years.

Jongs - I get ya. I like rufflin' a few feathers my own self, now and again.

The reason I went on a tirade in response to your post was that you didn't point Edwards out as another false prophet of politics - you pointed him out SPECIFICALLY as "another in a long line of Democrat false prophets." In doing that, you seem to imply that ONLY Democrats are fuckups; I was pointing out that for every fucked up Democrat, there seem to be at least four felonious Republicans. If you're indeed an equal-opportunity offender, then please feel free to reach out acroos the aisle in a bipartisan wayrant and rave about Republicans as vociferously and vehemently as you would a Democrat doing the same thing.

And, just for the record, I find Edwards to be amazingly, shockingly smarmy. If he hadn't gone into law, he'd still be finding a way to become a trial lawyer, because that's really the only thing he ever COULD be. I'm glad he's not on the ticket in any way, shape, or form, but I don't actually find him to be THAT much more slimy than most other politicians.

And if I could see Cheney or Bush stood up against a wall with a blindfold for war crimes, I would definitely do the dance of joy. And I'd hoist up a nice "Mission Accomplished" banner just for the occasion.

Ah, yes - that wonderful, magical FantasyLand where you can spend your way to prosperity, where invasions and occupation bring peace, where you can bomb your enemy into peace by bombing him into pieces, where enormous deficits are a good thing, and where voting against the interests of the soldiers at every turn and every opportunity is somehow twisted into your "support the troops" battle-cry.

Oh, wait... THAT FantasyLand would be called The Bush Administration.

I note for the record that bombing of the sort you describe is no longer practiced. If it was, we'd have more peace.

After all, when was the last time the Germans invaded Poland or the Japs decided to plant their flag on every spit of land to be found in the Pacific Ocean. Where once they were great powers intent on global domination...now they are some of our best buddies. I suspect bombs were the montivating factor.

When your looking at the ruins of your once great nation its easy to consider alternatives...or 'we kill you'...either way we get peace. Nowadays the 'or we kill you' part is what's missing in foriegn policy. I'm not saying we needed to wipe out Iraq, for example, it has always been sufficient to be willing to wipe them out. If they know we will not take those final steps, they have a moral safe harbor from which to continue to resist.

To be honest, I think some of PN's posts have a scintilla of truth to them. Unfortunately, he typically draws the wrong conclusion of events due to his rabid anti-Semitism and anti-societal psychosis. I suppose I'd have to admit that I can be "gullible" sometimes, as many of us are occasionally. I don't think that's the worst thing in the world. We've all seen icon after icon, respected and beloved heroes and role models self-destruct every day in front of our eyes. Decades of political corruption and destructive personal behavior have left me quite jaded. I trust no one...they're all guilty. These days it's hard to draw any distinction between the facts and the perception.

Yes, the tabloids got one right. Thus they must be spot on ALL the time, which means ... no! GEORGE AND LAURA ARE GETTING A DIVORCE!!!

So Edwards had an affair. Once again, America is shaken to the core, and, at the same time, thoroughly entertained, by a sex scandal involving a high-ranking politician. Yawn.

At least Democrats have affairs with women.

Am personally dissapointed in Edwards.

was Worried that it might be true even while not taking tabloid journalism alone as a source for condemnation,

As a rule though, sex scandals aren't waht I vote on. I'm not interested in judging somebody's personal life. Relationships are too complicated for me to try to insert my morality from a distance.

I vote on hypocracy though, and if you try to legistlate one thing and do another then, yes I have a problem, with people like say, Larry Craig.

But considering his wife's condition, I don't think she needed to hear this kind of thing about her husband, and he had more responsibility than most in not getting mired in such a matter. But on the other hand, that's arbitrary or 'gut' morality talking.

I was more appaled when I heard that Gingrich had his wife sign divorce papers on her deathbed for another woman,

but Edwards deserves his share of scorn here, I think.

In America, everyone should have a fair opportunity to realize their dreams, no matter where they came from. John Edwards is running for president to build One America where every American can work hard and build a better life, the same opportunity that Edwards had. At the same time, America's leadership role in the world has grown out of our moral strength as an example for the world, not just our economic and military strength.

In today's Two Americas, it is no coincidence that most families are working harder for stagnating wages when there are nearly 60 lobbyists for every member of Congress. America's image overseas has been tarnished by the war in Iraq, our refusal to join the world in working to halt global warming, and repeated violations of Americans' constitutional rights.

Building One America will take strong, bold steps, not incremental steps and half measures. Edwards has proposed detailed plans to put Washington back on the side of regular families.

The more I hear about Edwards's affair, the more disgusted I am. He says he had an affair with her, but he's not the father of her child, which to me is almost like saying, "I smoked marijuana, but I didn't inhale."

And now one of the people who runs Edwards's political action committee says that money was paid to the woman and to the alleged father of her child, but that it wasn't "hush money". Ummmm.... yeaaahhhh.

Very disappointed in the man. Never much liked him, but hoped he was a better man than he has turned out to be.

I'll be surprised if there aren't some criminal charges filed against some of the players in this drama.

Hell, given the way the justice system works ("works" - that's a joke!) in this country, I'll be more surprised if there ARE charges filed.

Thanks, John - you didn't just screw her, you've done your damnedest to screw everyone who ever believed in you even a little bit!

Edwards spent a large amount of his time scolding us over his imaginary " two America's " crap, which most folks saw through as nothing bout a phony campaign theme. So many gullible Democrats fell for that tripe, it's just funny to see him now, the beneficiary of living 2 lives!

As for Clinton, it was the whole 'under oath' thing which got him into real trouble. Not the abuse of power over an intern practically the same age of his own daughter. Nawww.. .seems D.C. is all fine w/ that, just don't perjure yourself. Especially if you're the President. And definitely don't do it and then wag your finger at the American public and say you didn't. You did, and that's why the Bar stripped you of your law license. Again, not for your abuse of power thing. BTW, Isn't the boss / secretary-intern thing what women's groups have been gnashing their teeth over for decades ? Funny how they turned a blind eye when Clinton did it.

Disgusted is a good word to use here. I think that sums up what many think , whether Democrat or Republican. I'm thinking the kid IS his, and will continue to think that until they ever do perform that test. I don't care what he says, his word means zilch.

And on that, we find common ground.

And I'm with you on the kid's-his-until-proven-otherwise part, too. Sure, he's *supposed* to be presumed innocent, but we already tried that, and he admitted to lying about it. As such, the onus is now on him to convince us there's anything about this whole deal that he WASN'T lying about!

What I'm most disturbed about is the payments from his PAC. It just reeks of typical Washington behavior. Why won't these clowns EVER learn that it ain't the crime that screws you, IT'S THE COVER-UP!

Rue, John Edwards disagrees with you. Here's what he told Katie Couric when she asked him if it's appropriate for voters to be concerned with a candidate's marital fidelity:

"Of course. I mean, for a lot of Americans -- including the family that I grew up with, I mean, it's fundamental to how you judge people and human character -- whether you keep your word, whether you keep what is your ultimate word, which is that you love your spouse, and you'll stay with them. ... I think the most important qualities in a president in today's world are trustworthiness -- sincerity, honesty, strength of leadership. And -- and certainly that goes to a part of that."

Run on a moral platform, you'd better be gorram moral.

JFK banged anything pretty with two legs. That didn't keep him from being a good President (Bay of Pigs notwithstanding).

There are character flaws I would worry about in a sitting President: being a closeted anything (Not that I worry about gays or lesbians, but if you can' admit the truth about yourself to yourself then you and reality are passing strangers at best); sociopaths; paranoids and other delusionals (including those who have recived special missions from GOD).

Adultery is not one of the things I worry about. People make mistakes. 25% of adults admitted having an affair and I'll bet there're are whole lot more than did but wouldn't say. I think that places Edwards pretty much in the middle of the pack.

What I find disturbing is that people would be such moral Puritans they would rather gossip endlessly about Edwards' affair (which in the scheme of things is pretty insignificant) than talk about life-and-issues. I suppose it gives some a chance to exercise their moral outrage.

As I tried to point out above, it's possible to strive for moral public polices (moral NOT in the religious sense) and fail - however briefly - in your own life. And to even claim those moral policies as your own.

As to what goes on in their sex lives - I DON'T CARE.

Absolutely Rue, but to act like you aren't failing, even condemning those who do while you're at it, is just too two-faced for me. Makes me wonder what he's do with those two faces government-wise. If one can't be honest with one's self, how can they be honest with anyone?

So here's a question:

On the one hand, a president who claims to be faithful to his wife, who lies the country into war and kills up to a million innocent people as a result.

On the other, failed candidate who now admits to a brief affair between consenting aduts and who supports policies that make the country better for all.

Who is more moral ?

Out of curiosity, are YOU personally moral, BDN ? B/c by your behavior here on the board, you are not. You are a troll, a hyporite, a liar. Not just sometimes, but consistently. Have you looked in the mirror lately ?

Why are you bringing me into this discussion Rue? I thought we were all discussing Edwards. First comes the strawman followed closely by the ad hominems, textbook Rue. Just curious Rue, can only conservatives be Trolls?

I'm sorry, I have a strong Leftist streak in me as you probably are aware, but when you enter public life, you'd better be able to control yourself some. It's not a 'failing' to undress a woman & put your penis in her, it's a CHOICE.
And if you make that choice, you'd better be able to say, "Yeah, my Wife knows about it, and yeah, I did it- so what?"
If not, JUST SAY NAY!!!

I haven't seen Edwards condemn anyone for having an affair, have you ? I've seen him describe the values the US public holds (as ignorant, puerile and lewd as they are), but I've never seen him judge anyone by that standard himself.

It is possible to personally fail to meet the highest stgandards 100% of the time (do any of us ever manage to succeed ?) and STILL strive for better, even moral, government.

So ? If the French Canadien Catholics could forgive French Canadien Catholic Pierre Trudeau his divorce because of the good he did for the country, (and at the time it was a huge scandal though now it seems so quaint, so trivial no one remembers) maybe we could be that smart. I agree with Obama. The country is faced with mortal problems. We need to make history-making choices about the many issues we are facing.

And we're consumed with THIS ???? The years-ago affair of an EX-candidate ? Does it matter in any way ?

Who's fault is that ? Oh, that's right, the 'liberal' media and the right-wing echo chamber.

Rapo, you're really reaching beyond reasonable rhetoric for that. Two Americas? Did you know that 25% of Americans have admitted to having an affair at some time during their marriage? And I'll bet the real number is more like 50%. So AFA I'm concerned (like I said before) that puts Edwards pretty much in the middle of the pack.

Not a nice thing to do, surely, but not so unusual.

So find yourself another issue to flog, because that doesn't hack it.

That would have been the better approach in that circumstance.

On topic, but from a different angle ...

You will rarely find a post from me about my family. When I do mention them, no matter how indirectly, it's usually b/c I sense someone here struggling with a personal issue that I might illuminate from experience (usually painful). I respect my family's privacy as something that is theirs to share, or not, as they see fit. Not mine.

I think Edwards together with his wife could have found a better approach. Or maybe that was the approach she preferred. We will probably never know. But there was a lot that involved other people besides John Edwards, and I don't fault him for keeping their privacy private.

Aside from that, it still doesn't matter to me what anyone does in bed with any consenting adult. And crap questions about that deserve whatever crap answer they get.

"best be prepared to spill the beans if attention comes to it, or better yet, have no beans to spill is all."

Then you'd better the kind of person to make your family walk the plank with every twitch and poke from the 'news' media. Or have the same done to your pastor, your neighbor, your college roommate from 20 years ago, your realtor, in fact, anyone you've ever met in your life ...

And, ChrisIsAll, you will NEVER find a candidate without moral blotch. Gandhi routinely slept with young girls (in the 10 - 12 year old category) to 'test his purity' . Mother Teresa felt she was living a lie since she hadn't felt god's presence in decades though she preached it every day . Abe Lincoln was a gay (at best bisexual) man who married the wealthy daughter of a landholder to get ahead in political life - and he may have had gay affairs on the side during his marriage. John Kennedy was a serial womanizer.

If you are waiting for a saint who also wants to implement good moral policies, you'll be waiting a long, long, long time.

Hey Chris, I agree with Rue. You will not find ANYONE who has no beans to spill. If it's not an affair it's an undocumented nanny or an unlicensed contactor... or an abortion. Since 30% of all women have had one, that means statistically speaking that 30% of all women in Congress have had an abortion and 30% of all men in Congress are married to a woman who had one, and some percentage are fathers to daughters who've had one. (And that's not even counting Congressional mistresses). Statistically, 10% of all people on Congress are gay. There's minor tax cheating, and smoking pot, and all manner of stuff that anyone could dredge up.

You gotta be able to distinguish the important stuff from the trivial.

That lie doesn't get any truer no matter how many times you repeat it. "Everyone" didn't think they had WMD's. There were questions, and there were inspections under way, and the Bush Administration didn't want to wait because - god forbid - the Iraqis might have been found NOT to have WMD, and that would screw up their whole agenda of regime change.

If "everyone" thought they had them, then why did many of the UN members vote for continuing the inspections and holding off on military intervention? And why did the Bush Administration find it necessary to forge a letter "linking" Saddam to Al Qaeda? And why was it necessary to fake the documents allegedly showing Iraq to be acquiring uranium from Niger?

Back on the topic of Edwards, it's not the affair that bugs me the most; humans have human failings, and most men have the philosophy of a dog - if I can't eat it or fuck it, then piss on it. What bugs me is that, when asked about it point-blank, he CHOSE to lie about it. He lied to reporters, he lied to friends and supporters, and he lied to his staff - and then he had them repeat those lies. He didn't merely sully himself; in persisting with the lie, he sullied the reputations of a good number of decent people who spread the lie for him. THAT is immoral, in my book.

So it's not the sex, it's not the affairs - it's the lies. THAT is what pisses me off about Edwards. And I realize that a politician lying should be news to exactly nobody... still, it isn't pretty to watch it all unravel.

Kwicko... but there is the problem that Rue pointed out: Admitting to a truth (Yes, I'm gay/ had an affair/ had an abortion/ had electroshock therapy/ took hardcore drugs/ cheated on sale of a home/ adopted a child/ had group sex/ have HIV) affects not only the candidate but their family. That shouldn't be part of being a public person's spouse or child. So how do we balance the public's "right to know" with the candidate's and family's right to privacy? What DOES the public have a "right to know"?
