Hello everyone. :)

I've been watching through Firefly with a family member lately... really having a good time. Thing is, he's sort of a religious person, and though some stuff is okay... sometimes watching shows like this can get kind of... awkward. I've been warned that "Heart of Gold" has a sex scene that might be worth avoiding, so I'll probably watch that one by myself. Is there anything else I should be careful about? We've seen through "Jaynestown" except for "Our Mrs. Reynolds."

No spoilers, please. :P

If he's REALLY uptight he may not like Our Mrs. Reynolds. ;^)

If you're avoiding the sex you'll probably want to steer clear of War Stories. Also maybe Out of Gas but that's the best episode so maybe not.

Are you trying to avoid issues of pre-marital sexual relations? Sinning in general? Specifically nudity? hacking off body parts? What?

For nudity, skip Trash (Mal) and Ariel (River's holograph in the neuroimager) and Our Mrs. Reynolds (Saffron seducing Mal) and the Pilot (River-in-the-Box) and War Stories (Inara and Counciler).

I generally figure if they have hang-ups, they shouldn't watch network television, go rent G-rated dvds.
If they are truly interested in religion, almost each episode should provide fodder for discussion about religions and their potential future.

I think Siterian is trying to avoid sex, and anything that puts The Bible in a bad light. Also, I don't really think River's Holoimage qualifies as "Nudity."

There is not a whole lot of safe episodes. I realized this when I was trying to pick an episode to watch on a plane flight when I had an older couple next to me. I pretty much wanted to avoid any nudity or sex.

Serenity (the pilot) - out (River naked in a box, Inara naked bathing, Inara sexin up a client)
Train Job - in
Bushwacked - in
Shindig - in
Out of Gas - out (Kaylee sexin Bester)
Our Mrs. Reynolds - out (naked Saffron)
Safe - in
War Stories - out (Inara and councilor)
Objects in Space - maybe (topless Simon, provocative Wash and Zoe in their bunk)
The Message - out (naked Tracey)
Trash - out (naked Mal)
Heart of Gold - out (Mal and Nandi gettin it on)

Joss really liked some skin in Firefly.

The Bible says that we were told to be fruitful and multiply. Do you think God intended for us to do that with our clothes on?

Whargh. Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned the religious part. Thanks all for the information though. :)

Mebe I'll just secretly watch the episodes first without them. It's good enough where I don't mind seeing them first, I guess. :D

Perhaps someone better at searching this site can come up with a link to something mentioned here before, a blog written by a minister, who is very much a Firefly fan. If a minister can find things of value in the show, in spite of some less than virtuous actions by some of the characters, then I think most anyone can enjoy it without getting too bent out of shape. In my opinion, the only thing that even the most devout should have a problem with is the Inara/counselor scene in "War Stories."

I don't see why it should be an issue at all,

the stories are not about the sin, but about how one acts in a world of sin. Nobody in the verse is perfect, as in our world... but how we act is important.

One example, In the train job. When Mal is caught by the marshal returning the stolen medical supplies. ( stealing was wrong, but then the entire situation became apparent ) the marshal says " A person may take a job not knowing what it is, but then they have a choice " the Mal says " I don't believe that they do "

Great lines, and I think an object lesson about morality as well.
